Supporting Regional, Rural and Remote Players

This paper presents an algorithm for creating and maintaining a dynamic localized peer-to-peer overlay network with its main application to massively multiplayer games. In these games, players reside in a large game world with many thousands of players but each player has typically a limited vision range. In our solution, players join the network as peers and mainly connect to neighbor peers that are close to them in the virtual game world. As players move in the game they change their neighbors dynamically with very little overhead. Peers can multicast messages that are received by peers in their locality very fast (often faster than in client-server solutions) while players that are further away receive them later or not at all. Not receiving messages from remote players is important in order to not cause the load on each peer to grow with the number of players in the game. Our performance analysis confirms that our solution allows for dynamic game worlds of practically unlimited size, only limited in scale by the number of players within the vision range.

Modern organizations often bring together groups in which some people are collocated and some remote. These groups often take the form of loosely-organized networks rather than hierarchies. Partially distributed groups may have characteristics that are different from fully collocated or fully distributed groups, such as being particularly vulnerable to subgroup formation. A ten-person simulation game called Shape Factory was used to model partially-distributed collaboration networks. We found that biases in trade patterns did occur among both collocated and remote (isolated) players. Collocated players formed a strong subgroup, with a bias toward ingroup trading, which almost immediately led remote players to form their own subgroup. These groups strengthened over time. Despite being at a technological disadvantage, the remote group performed as collocated workers.

The motivation of this talk is to investigate what quantum resources will bring about in our daily life. A kind of quantization for general bipartite games is first given and then applied to both the modified classical “cash in a hat” game and modified Prisoners Dilemma game with different distribution policies. It is shown that quantum entanglement can bring full cooperation with the help of fair distribution policies. It is further demonstrated that quantum networks will make possible playing quantum game between remote players. Two schemes are given to illustrate how to play distributed quantum games between two players on the nodes of quantum networks. In our opinion, it is a worthy research topic to investigate how quantum entanglement can be exploited to achieve full cooperation with equitable distribution polices.

The Bush Telegraph is based on the Music Table, a system that allows people to make music by arranging cards on a table. Because the user manipulates a schedule for note events rather than directly initiating them, this schedule can be shared between two remotely linked systems. The Bush Telegraph allows remote players to play together without timing problems due to network delays. Shared music making is made very easy but still allowing for creative freedom. We see this type of system becoming a fixture in dance club environments.KeywordsAugmented RealityGame GraphicMarker TrackingMusic TrackInstrument SoundThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
