Supradiscus varidiscus, a New Species of Sucker-Mouthed Hillstream Fish (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) from the Lo River Basin, Northern Vietnam

Acheilognathus nguyenvanhaoi Nguyen H. D., Tran D. H. & Ta T. T. sp. n. Holotype: MB-HNUE VI.1-F01; female, 51.4 mm SL; Vietnam: Quang Ninh Prov., Tien Yen River at Binh Lieu town; Nguyen Huu Duc et al., 14 March 2011. Paratype: 1 MB-HNUE VI.1-F02, male, 60.5 mm SL. Same data as holotype. Diagnosis: When Acheilognathus nguyenvanhaoi sp. n. is compared with closely related species of Acheilognathus, it is characteristic in the five following traits: a broad and dark longitudinal stripe on body (both sides) running from tip of snout to tip of middle caudal fin rays, not tapering anteriorly vs. a narrower and lighter one running most anteriorly behind operculum to caudal base, tapering anteriorly; pharyngeal teeth (5.1-0.5, vs. 5-5); spiny rays of dorsal and anal fins (III-IV, vs. III) and scales above lateral line (7, vs less than 6). The new species differed from A. meridianus and A. barbatus in number of predorsal scales; from A. meridianus, A. barbatulus and A. melanogaster in number of vertebrae; from A. melanogaster in lenght of barbel; from A. brevicaudatus and A. melanogaster in number of gill rackers on the outer side of the first gill arch and from A. barbatulus and A. melanogaster in proportion between anterior and posterior length of gas-bladder. Description: SL = 3.09-3.13 BD = 4.48-4.62 HL = 1.97-2.02 PDL = 4.05-4.84 LCP = 7.76-8.48 CPD; HL = 2.76-3.05 OD = 2.70-2.76 IOW. Body compressed. Mouth sub-inferior. Barbels present. Dorsal fin with 3-4 non-segmented spiny soft rays and 9 branched rays. Anal fin with 3-4 non-segmented spiny soft rays and 10-11 branched rays. Pectoral fin with one segmented spiny soft ray and 11 branched rays. Pelvic fin with one segmented spiny soft ray and 7 branched rays. Lateral line complete with 36-37 pored scales. Predorsal scales 13-14; Scales around caudal peduncle 14-15; Gill rakers on external side of first gill arch 9; Pharyngeal teeth 5.1-0.5. Vertebrae 37-38. Inserted position of first proximal pterygiophores in the dorsal and anal fins as 10th-11th and 18th, respectively. Colour in preservative: Body yellowish. A board longitudinal dark stripe on body running from the tip of snout to the tip of the middle caudal fin rays, not tapering anteriorly. Distribution: Presently known only from the Tien Yen river, Quang Ninh province, Northern Vietnam at Binh Lieu town. Etymology: Named for Nguyen Van Hao, a Vietnamese ichthyologist.

Puntius rohani, a new species of cyprinid fish, is described from the Kanyakumari District, southern India. This species can be distinguished from the other members of the Puntius filamentosus Group by the combination of the following characters: the absence of vertical black bands near the tips of the caudal fin; the presence of an elongate black club-shaped blotch 1.5 scales high extending from the 12-13th lateral-line scales to the caudal-fin base; and possessing 2-3+6-9 gill rakers on the first gill arch, 21-23 lateral-line scales, seven predorsal scales, ½4+1+3-3½ scales in transverse line from the dorsal-fin origin to the mid-ventral scale row, and 2-2½ scales between the lateral line and the pelvic-fin origin.

The length–weight relationships (LWRs) of 11 fish species from one national park and three nature reserves, in northern Vietnam, totaling 737 individuals between October 2018 and November 2021, are described in this study. The following species, representing 11 genera and seven families, were studied: Aphyocypris normalis Nichols et Pope, 1927, Barbodes semifasciolatus (Günther, 1868), Beaufortia pingi (Fang, 1930), Carassius auratus (Linnaeus, 1758), Glyptothorax honghensis Li, 1984, Hemibarbus medius Yue, 1995, Macropodus opercularis (Linnaeus, 1758), Neolissochilus benasi (Pellegrin et Chevey, 1936), Onychostoma gerlachi (Peters, 1881), Opsariichthys minutus Nichols, 1926, Rhinogobius duospilus (Herre, 1935). All regressions were highly significant (P < 0.001). Positive allometric growth was seen in six species (b > 3, P < 0.01) and isometric growth in five species (b = 3, P > 0.05). This is the first report on the LWRs of six fish species, including Beaufortia pingi, Barbodes semifasciolatus, Neolissochilus benasi, Opsariichthys minutus, Glyptothorax honghensis, and Rhinogobius duospilus from four conservation areas. The presently reported study provides foundational data for future stock assessment works and management initiatives in protected areas, as well as facilities comparisons of LWRs from different habitats.

The ichthyo-fauna in the Ba Che and Tien Yen rivers, northern Vietnam is highly diverse, with a total of 245 species determined. However, data on the distribution of fish species are not sufficiently provided for the whole area. This study was conducted from 2008 to 2011 at 27 stations from the Ba Che and Tien Yen river basins to determine the distribution of fish species according to different sections of the rivers, water bodies, seasons, and salinity levels. The results show that fish species are distributed mainly in the river (with 210 species), concentrated in the downstream area (with 213 species). Fishes are mainly collected in the dry season when the salinity level of river is high, due to seawater intrusion which also brings in 160 species of marine fish. This shows that fish distribution in the research areas is mainly dominated by the presence of marine species. While for freshwater fish, it is clearly affected by the mountainous features. Apart from the common characteristics sharing between the two river basins, but the number of both freshwater and marine fish species in the Tien Yen river are larger than those of Ba Che river, which is related to fresh water surface, river morphology, the width and location of the estuary to the sea. The downstream area is home to the fish species recorded in the Red Data Book of Vietnam and the complementary species for Vietnam, while the middle and upstream of the rivers may offer a high potential of biodiversity, with many possibly new species for science. These are important data for the conservation and sustainable development of fish resources in the Ba Che and Tien Yen river basins.

Garra arupi, a new cyprinid fish species is differentiated from its congeners along the base of the Himalaya in Brahmaputra basin by a combination of characters: two pairs of barbels, anterior position of vent (vent to anal distance 52.6-60.0% pelvic to anal distance), a band of 6-9 prominent horny tubercles on the tip of the snout, a submarginal black band on the dorsal fin, and 16 circumpeduncular scales. It is similar to G. kempi in having an anterior position of the vent, and similar to G. lissorynchus in having a distinct submarginal band on the dorsal fin. Garra arupi differs from G. kempi in having 35-36 (vs. 40-42) lateral line scales, 11-12 (vs. 13-14) predorsal scales, 16 (vs. 12) circumpeduncular scales, the presence of a distinct submarginal band on the dorsal fin (vs. absence), the presence of a transverse band of tubercles on the snout tip (vs. absence), and the presence of 7-8 thin stripes on the caudal peduncle (vs. absence). Garra arupi differs from G. lissorynchus in having 11-12 (vs. 14-15) predorsal scales, 7 (vs. 6) branched dorsal fin rays, 5 (vs. 4) branched anal fin rays, the absence of a W-shaped color band on the caudal fin (vs. presence), the absence of a rostral lobe on the snout (vs. presence), the presence of a transverse band of tubercles on the snout tip (vs. absence), and a vent to anal distance 52.6-60.0 (vs. 37.3-40.2 %) pelvic to anal distance.

A new atherinid fish, Doboatherina palauensis, is described based on the holotype and 31 paratypes, 36–51 mm in standard length, collected from the marine lakes and outer lagoon in Mecherchar Island, Republic of Palau. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners by a short, blunt ascending process of the premaxilla (height about twice maximum width), premaxilla with a single lateral process, posterior upper margin of dentary with a small process, palatine toothed, no crenulation along posterior margin of lateral and predorsal scales, smaller eye (diameter 9.2–11% of standard length), 37–39 midlateral scales, 38–41 total vertebrae, narrower midlateral band (about 1/2 width of midlateral scale, its upper and lower margins not reaching to upper and lower margins of midlateral scale row at the level of anal-fin origin, respectively). The new species resembles Doboatherina aetholepis (Kimura, Iwatsuki and Yoshino 2002), Doboatherina bleekeri (Gunther 1861), Doboatherina valenciennei (Bleeker 1854) and Doboatherina woodwardi (Jordan and Starks 1901) in sharing a comparatively slender body in the genus Doboatherina. The former is distinguishable from D. aetholepis by having only a short spatular outgrowth on posterior margin of predorsal and/or interdorsal scales or almost lacking the outgrowth (vs. a long spatular outgrowth on posterior margin of most predorsal and interdorsal scales in D. aetholepis) and narrower midlateral band (lower margin not reaching to lower margin of midlateral scale row vs. reaching), from D. bleekeri and D. valenciennei by lacking crenulated lateral and predorsal scales (vs. having crenulated lateral and/or predorsal scales) and a single lateral process on premaxilla (vs. two processes), and from D. woodwardi by having lower ascending process (height about twice maximum width vs. three times) and a single lateral process on premaxilla (vs. two processes). Doboatherina bleekeri has more numerous total vertebrae (42–47) than D. palauensis (38–41).

A new species of splitfin fish, Synagrops atrumoris sp. nov., from Dongsha Island, Taiwan, South China Sea, is described based on its morphological characteristics, including osteology and otolith morphology, and DNA sequence. Synagrops atrumoris sp. nov. is closely similar to Synagrops japonicus and can be distinguished by its black mouth cavity covering the lower portion of the tongue, posteriorly enlarged and complex basioccipital fossae, and a triangular otolith with a strong postero-dorsal angle, as well as a strong genetic difference. In addition, the taxonomy of the genus Synagrops was revised. Available published data, together with our results, suggest that S. bellus is a synonym of S. japonicus.

The fossil shrimps or prawns briefly described in the preceding paper by Dr. H. Woodward occur in the ‘fish-clay’ of the Osborne Series at Chapelcorner Copse, Binstead House, Ryde House, and Sea View, Isle of Wight, and they were first discovered by me in these beds about the year 1876. Having regard to the fact that new species of fish, etc., have been recently obtained from the Osborne Beds, it would seem that these prawns are very probably also new to English strata.

The Beat

The problem of invasive species of fish is a major issue, both internationally and nationally.The presence of invasive species is often associated with acclimatization of new species of fish, activities correlated with the absence of effective control and quarantine programs.In other words, when new desired species are imported, other accompanying species are also brought in often in the form of embryonated eggs or juveniles.The brown bullhead, which we have studied, is also an invasive species of fish in Stejeris Lake, Cluj County.This species is of interest, both scientifically and economically.From the scientific point of view, brown bullhead has a high capacity of resistance to environmental changes, unfavourably conditions, which ensures a perpetuation of the species in almost every aquatic environment.Even though it is recognized that the economic impact of this invasive species is significant, not much information is available at present, and neither is there much data about the topography of its internal organs, which is being studied in this paper.

Currently, among nearly 11,000 fresh and brackish water fish species described in the world (Nelson, 1994; Froese & Pauly, 2016), 3,360 species have been described from Africa, belonging to 95 families (Lévêque et al., 2008). Initially, these species were listed in the Check-List of the Freshwater Fishes of Africa or CLOFFA (Daget et al., 1984, 1986a and b, 1991), but since its publication numerous species have been described or placed in synonymy following taxonomic revisions. These revisions also concerned the higher entities (genera, families). Thus, many families have been broken up into several others. For example the old family Bagridae has been divided into three families: Bagridae, Claroteidae and Austroglanididae (Mo, 1991). Conversely, some families who still retained an uncertain status could now be grouped. Thus, genetic studies have confirmed the monophyly of the Cromeriidae and Grasseichthyidae with the Kneriidae within the Gonorynchiformes (Lavoué et al., 2005).The discovery and description of new species of fish still constitute an important scientific activity in Africa. Rich faunas of cichlids endemic to the Great Lakes of East Africa have not yet delivered all their secrets. Similarly, still poorly-explored areas, such as Angola and some areas including parts of the Congo basin, should still reveal many other species.In countries where the fish fauna is considered to be relatively well-known, the introduction of new fishing techniques (electro-fishing for example) can lead to the identification of species that had not been captured using traditional techniques alone. Similarly, using new taxonomic tools (i. e., molecular techniques, specific parasitic markers, electrical signals, behaviour, etc.) has facilitated the revision of some taxonomic groups previously based solely on morphology.For example, we can mention the striking species flock of Brienomyrus (Mormyridae) in Ogowe basin in Gabon (Sullivan et al., 2002; Sullivan et al., 2004). At least 41 different forms could be identified, while only five species are described (figure 4.1). However, the specific status of some of these forms remains uncertain. Thus, it is not possible to distinguish the two groups that have different electric waves using only morphological or genetic characters (Arnegard et al., 2005) (figure 4.2).
