With every year’s start being a new beginning and a source of happiness, reigniting hopes and optimism around the world, the happiness and enjoyment of the year 2020 faded away quite earlier. It was not long into the year 2020 that the notorious COVID-19 hit the world. Millions of people died of it and billions of people got affected by it either directly or indirectly. With its impact on everybody, it drastically affected the business world as well; individuals lost their jobs and companies lost their businesses. However, companies learned to respond to the pandemic by converting their businesses to the online business model and the customers also shifted to online shopping. With this compelling shift, the customers still had the phobia of online shopping and tried to abstain from it as much as possible. To respond to this, a systematic review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was developed to offer a systematic and holistic literature review of the research regarding customer confidence in online shopping particularly by the use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The database of this review includes a set of 54 systemically selected state-of-the-art articles from Scopus database covering empirical and theory research conducted in different countries with different resource endowments. The results show that the use of AR technology can help customers in overcoming their shopping phobia and thus, it can be a source of enhanced online business for companies. Some possible opportunities for future research are also illustrated in this paper.

The analysis reveals that the integration of BIM and AR significantly contributes to real-time project progress monitoring, enhanced team communication and coordination, accelerated decision-making, and improved schedule and quality control. However, the implementation of these technologies still faces challenges, such as visual overlay accuracy, loss of BIM metadata, hardware limitations, and human resource readiness. This study highlights the need for the development of technical guidelines and comprehensive adoption strategies, while also identifying opportunities for further research, particularly in the integration of 5D BIM and AR for more optimal project resource management.

On average, annual building maintenance and repair cost 1–5% of the initial building cost, which, accumulated over the building life, could even exceed the initial construction cost. New advancements in architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) are transforming the current practice of building maintenance operations using visualization and sensing technologies. This chapter will describe a use case for the application of augmented reality (AR) visualization in building maintenance and repair. AR enhances user’s perception of the surroundings by overlaying virtual objects on real-world views and can lead to new forms of user interaction. For instance, AR visualization embedded in the building maintenance instruction manual (BMIM) can be used to guide facility managers and repair personnel. We present the design and evaluation of an AR-integrated BMIM to improve the quality of building operation and maintenance. We adopt the design science research (DSR) methodology to carry out a systematic literature review, characterization of AR features that can be applied to BMIM, development of AR artifacts for incorporating into BMIM, and assessment of user performance through experiments with measurements taken with the NASA TLX protocol. Results are implemented in two applications, namely, Living Augmented Reality (LAR) and Manual Augmented Reality (MAR), with different visualization scales. Analysis of users’ workload data indicates that a majority agree that BMIM can be effectively enhanced with a high degree of acceptability using AR on mobile devices. It is also found that this integration will be helpful to future evolution of the BMIM and integration with the Internet of Things paradigm.KeywordsFacility managementAugmented realityBuilding maintenance instruction manualUser performanceMobile device

Over the past few years, the manufacturing industry has increasingly embraced Augmented Reality (AR) for inspecting real products, yet faces challenges in visualization modalities. In fact, AR content presentation significantly impacts user performance, especially when virtual object colors lack real-world context. Additionally, the lack of studies in this area compounds uncertainty about visualization effects on user performance in inspection tasks. This study introduces a novel AR recoloring technique to enhance user performance during industrial assembly inspection tasks. This technique automatically recolors virtual components based on their physical counterparts, improving distinctiveness. Experimental comparisons with AR experts and representative users, using objective and subjective metrics, demonstrate the proposed AR recoloring technique enhances task performance and reduces mental burden during inspection activities. This innovative approach outperforms established methods like CAD and random modes, showcasing its potential for advancing AR applications in manufacturing, particularly in the inspection of products.
