Abstract

This study explores the relationship between Geometry teachers’ teaching approaches and students’ conceptual understanding in Geometry. It sought to determine the level of teaching approaches in terms of Guided Practice, Lecture-Based, and Collaborative Learning and how these relate to students’ level of conceptual understanding. Employing a descriptive-correlational research design, the study was conducted among Grade 8 students from three private schools in Cagayan de Oro City. Stratified random sampling was used to select student respondents from Capitol University Basic Education Department, Pilgrim Christian College, and Southern de Oro Philippine College. The instruments used were a self-made survey checklist to identify observed teaching approaches and a researcher-made test to assess students’ conceptual understanding. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Results revealed that Collaborative Learning was the most dominant teaching approach, while students demonstrated a less satisfactory level of conceptual understanding; significant positive relationships were also found between Guided Practice and Lecture-Based instruction with students’ understanding. It was concluded that teaching strategies notably influence how well students grasp geometric concepts. It is recommended that teachers enhance the use of guided and lecture-based strategies while enriching collaborative learning practices to improve student outcomes in Geometry.
