Prediction of Landslide Risk Based on Modified Generalized Regression Neural Network Algorithm
As a natural disaster, landslide causes immeasurable losses. The particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA) are used to modify the smoothing factor of the generalized regression neural network (GRNN), which improves the prediction efficiency of GRNN. By building a landslide monitoring platform, the rainfall, shallow soil moisture content, deep soil moisture content, soil glide stress, and surface displacement are used as five landslide factors for landslide risk analysis, and the modified landslide models are applied to the processing of landslide data. These two models are used to predict the landslide risk, and compared with the models of BP, Elman neural network and RBF neural network for landslide prediction. The results illustrate that the modified GRNN landslide models have better prediction effects of landslide risk than BP neural network model, Elman neural network model, and Radial basis function neural network model, which provides a reference for engineering practice.

Closely connected to human carbon emissions, global climate change is affecting regional economic and social development, natural ecological environment, food security, water supply, and many other social aspects. In a word, climate change has become a vital issue of general concern in the current society. In this study, the carbon emission data of Chinese provinces in 1999–2019 are collected and analyzed, so as to identify the carbon emission of direct consumption per 10,000 residents in each province (including each municipal city and autonomous region) and the entire nation based on population data. The Arc Geographic Information Science Engine (ArcGIS Engine) and C#.NET platform are employed to call the MATLAB neural network toolbox. A model is selected and embedded in the prediction system to develop the entire system. This study demonstrates that the carbon emissions per resident in Northern China are significantly higher than those in Southern China, with the rate of carbon emissions continuing to increase over time. Compared with other models, the Elman neural network has a higher carbon emission prediction accuracy, but with more minor errors. For instance, its accuracy and prediction performance are improved by 55.93% and 19.48%, respectively, compared with the Backpropagation Neural Network (BPNN). The prediction results show that China is expected to reach its peak carbon emission in around 2025–2030. The above results are acquired based on the concept of carbon emissions and neural network model theories, supported by GIS component technology and intelligent methods. The feasibility of BPNN, Radial Basis Function (RBF) and Elman neural network models for predicting residential carbon emissions is analyzed. This study also designs a comprehensive, integrated and extensible visual intelligent platform, which is easy to implement and stable in operation. The trend and characteristics of carbon emission changes from 2027 to 2032 are explored and predicted based on the data about direct carbon emissions of Chinese provincial residents from 1999 to 2019, purposed to provide a scientific basis for the control and planning of carbon emissions.
Read moreA Speed Prediction Method of Electric Propulsion Ship Based on GA-Elman Neural Network
With the development of shipping industry, more and more attention has been paid to the environmental pollution of waterways and surrounding areas. Accurate prediction of ship speed plays an essential role in ship operation optimization and decision support, and is also one of the key means for ships to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction. Traditional methods of ship speed estimation are mainly based on hydrodynamics and full-size measurement, which have obvious disadvantages such as large computational workload or large measurement investment. In this study, through the analysis of historical ship speed data, a data-driven ship speed prediction approach based on the Elman neural network model is investigated. Furthermore, Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to optimize the weights and thresholds of Elman neural network to improve the prediction accuracy and computational efficiency of the algorithm. Finally, the proposed GA-Elman neural network model is experimentally verified by the actual navigation data of an inland electric propulsion vessel, and compared with the BP neural network model and the Elman neural network model. Experimental results show that the speed prediction method based on GA-Elman neural network proposed in this paper has higher prediction accuracy, and the prediction error is reduced by 56.67% and 48% compared with the BP neural network model and Elman neural network model respectively.
Read moreA Star Identification Algorithm based on Radial Basis Neural Network
This paper uses a radial basis function (RBF) neural network for star identification. A feature vector consisting of distance and angle cosine values is constructed as a library of recognition feature stars and input to the neural network. Then, the network’s output is the number of the corresponding primary star. Comparing the training efficiency and robustness of the grid algorithm with the BP neural network and radial basis function neural network for star identification, the experimental results show that the radial basis function neural network has a strong anti-interference ability against noise and pseudo-star interference. The following conclusions are drawn from the simulation tests: the sample recognition rate of radial basis function neural network algorithm can reach 96% for star position and star addition noise; when the proportion of pseudo-star reaches 20%, the sample recognition rate of radial basis function neural network algorithm is still higher than grid algorithm and BP neural network, which indicates that the radial basis function neural network algorithm has the solid anti-interference ability to both noise and pseudo-star. Therefore, the radial basis function neural network algorithm based on star Identification has specific application prospects.

In the present study, deep learning neural network model has been employed in many engineering problems including heat transfer prediction. The main consideration of this document is to predict the performance of the boiling heat transfer in helical coils under terrestrial gravity conditions and compare with actual experimental data. Total of 877 data sample has been used in the present neural model. Artificial new Neural Network (ANN) model developed in Python environment with Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) using four parameters (helical coils dimensions, mass flow rate, heating power, inlet temperature) and one parameter (outlet temperature) has been used in the input layer and output layer in order. Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm using L2 Regularization to find out the optimal model. A typical feed-forward neural network model composed of three layers, with 30 numbers of neurons in each hidden layer, has been found as optimal based on statistical error analysis. The 4-30-30-1 neural model predicts the characteristics of the helical coil with the accuracy of 98.16 percent in the training stage and 96.68 percent in the testing stage. The result indicated that the proposed ANN model successfully predicts the heat transfer performance in helical coils and can be applied for others operation concerned with heat transfer prediction for future works
Read moreForecasting of Trend-Cycle Time Series Using Hybrid Model Linear Regression
Forecasting for a time series signal carrying single pattern characteristics can be done properly using function mapping-based principle by a well-designed artificial neural network model. But the performances degraded very much when time series carried the mixture of different patterns characteristics. The level of difficulty increases further when there is a need to predict far time samples. Among several possible mixtures of patterns, the trend-cycle time series is having its importance because of its occurrence in many real-life applications like in electric power generation, fuel consumption and automobile sales. Over the mixed characteristics of patterns, a neural model, suffered heavily in getting generalized learning, in result poor performances appeared over test data. To overcome this issue in this work, a decomposition-based approach has been applied to separate the component patterns of trend and cyclic patterns, and a dedicated model has been developed for predicting the individual data patterns. The linear characteristic of the trend data pattern has been modeled through a linear regression model while the nonlinearity behavior of cyclic pattern has been model by an adaptive radial basis function neural network. The final predicted outcome has been considered as the linear combination of individual model outcomes. The Gaussian function has been considered as the kernel function in the radial basis function neural network because of its wider and efficient applicability in function mapping. The performance of the neural model has been improved very much by providing the adaptive value of spreads and centers of basis function along with weights values. In this paper, two different applications of forecasting in the area of electric power demand by the individual house and month-wise annual power generation have been considered. Based on house characteristics parameters, the power demanded by a house have been considered which carried a moderate complexity of function mapping problem while in another case, total power generation needed to be predicted on the monthly basis for a year from just the previous year observation, which carried the mixed behavior of trend and cyclic pattern. For house power demand forecasting the adaptive kernel-based radial basis function has shown very satisfactory performances and much better against static kernel radial basis function and multilayer perceptron neural network. The integrated approach of neural model and linear regression has shown very efficient outcomes for the mixture pattern while individual neural models were failed to do so. The coefficient of determination (R2) has been applied to estimate the quality of predicted outcomes and comparison.

Nowadays , nonlinear time series and artificial neural networks (ANN) models are used for forecasting in the field of business, agriculture and soon. Recent studies have shown, ANN have been successfully used for forecasting of financial and agriculture data series The classical methods used for time series prediction like Box-Jenkins or ARIMA assumes that there is a linear relationship between inputs and outputs. ANN have more advantages that can approximate to model both linear and nonlinear structures in time series, they are not able to handling both structures equally well. The autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and two ANN models namely, Radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN), and Elman recurrent neural networks (ERNN) methods were applied to Hyderabad airport traffic data. The data obtained for 15 years from 2002–2003 to 2016–2017 about domestic and international passenger of International Airport of Hyderabad, India. In this research paper, we compared the performances of ARIMA, RBFNN and ERNN were based on three measures: mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and root mean square error (RMSE). The results showed that RBFNN obtained the smallest MAE, MAPE and RMSE in both the modeling and forecasting processes. The performances of the three models ranked in ascending order were: ARIMA, ERNN and the RBFNN model. Read morePerformance Improvement of Photovoltaic Power Forecasting Model Based on Hilbert Huang Transforsm
Photovoltaic power generation is fluctuation and intermittent, and the grid-connected operation of large-scale photovoltaic power plants may have an impact on the safe and stable economic operation of the power system. An effective way to solve the problem is to make scientific forecasts of the output power of PV power plants. In this paper, Back Propagation (BP) and Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network prediction models are established by using the historical values of actual power generation of Guhe Runneng Photovoltaic Power Station in Gaotang County of Liaocheng City in 2017. According to the characteristics of photovoltaic power fluctuation, the output power is treated as a set of digital signals for short-term PV power prediction, and a prediction model based on the Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) power data decomposition is proposed. Through the analysis of an example, it can be concluded that after HHT, the prediction effect is significantly improved, and the accuracy of PV power prediction is improved. Moreover, compared with BP neural network, RBF neural network has smaller prediction error.

Read morePrediction of Permeability Using Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) Neural Network from Well Log Data
Permeability is an important petrophysical parameter that controls the fluid flow within the reservoir. Estimating permeability presents several challenges due to the conventional approach of core analysis or well testing, which are expensive and time-consuming. On the contrary, artificial intelligence has been adopted in recent years in predicting reliable permeability data. Despite its shortcomings of overfitting and low convergence speed, artificial neural network (ANN) has been the widely used artificial intelligent method. Based on this, the present study conducted permeability prediction using the group method of data handling (GMDH) neural network from well log data of the West arm of the East African Rift Valley. Comparative analysis of GMDH permeability model and ANN methods of the back propagation neural network (BPNN) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) were further explored. The results of the study showed that the proposed GMDH model outperformed BPNN and RBFNN as it achieved R/root mean square error (RMSE) value of 0.989/0.0241 for training and 0.868/0.204 for predicting, respectively. Sensitivity analysis carried out revealed that shale volume, standard resolution formation density, and thermal neutron porosity were the most influential well log parameters when developing the GMDH permeability model.
Read moreA Hybrid Short-term Traffic Flow Forecasting Method Based on Neural Networks Combined with K-Nearest Neighbor
It is critical to implement accurate short-term traffic forecasting in traffic management and control applications. This paper proposes a hybrid forecasting method based on neural networks combined with the K-nearest neighbor (K-NN) method for short-term traffic flow forecasting. The procedure of training a neural network model using existing traffic input-output data, i.e., training data, is indispensable for fine-tuning the prediction model. Based on this point, the K-NN method was employed to reconstruct the training data for neural network models while considering the similarity of traffic flow patterns. This was done through collecting the specific state vectors that were closest to the current state vectors from the historical database to enhance the relationship between the inputs and outputs for the neural network models. In this study, we selected four different neural network models, i.e., back-propagation (BP) neural network, radial basis function (RBF) neural network, generalized regression (GR) neural network, and Elman neural network, all of which have been widely applied for short-term traffic forecasting. Using real world traffic data, the experimental results primarily show that the BP and GR neural networks combined with the K-NN method have better prediction performance, and both are sensitive to the size of the training data. Secondly, the forecast accuracies of the RBF and Elman neural networks combined with the K-NN method both remain fairly stable with the increasing size of the training data. In summary, the proposed hybrid forecasting approach outperforms the conventional forecasting models, facilitating the implementation of short-term traffic forecasting in traffic management and control applications.

Read moreModeling Nitrate Concentration in Natural Streams by Using Artificial Neural Networks
Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are applied to estimating nitrate concentrations in a typical Midwestern river, i.e., the Upper Sangamon River in Illinois. Throughout the Midwestern U.S., nitrate in raw water has recently become an increasingly important problem. This is due to recent changes in the USEPA nitrate standard and to the increasingly widespread use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. Back-propagation neural networks (BPNN) and radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN) are compared as to their effectiveness in water quality modeling. Training of the RBFNN is much faster than that of the BPNN and yields more robust results. These two types of ANNs are compared to traditional regression and mechanistic water quality modeling, based on overall accuracy and on the frequency of false-negative prediction. The RBFNN achieves the best results of all models in terms of overall accuracy, and both BPNN and RBFNN yield the same false-negative frequency, which is better than that of the traditional models.
