The essay examines the question of Philo’s reception by Christian writers (outside the New Testament) before the writings of Clement of Alexandria, the first Christian explicitly to name Philo as a source. After an introduction laying out the inherent complexities involved in such an investigation, the works of four Christian writers (1 Clement, Barnabas, Theophilus of Antioch and Justin Martyr) are discussed. It is shown that while each could have known Philo’s works, there is no compelling evidence in favor of such a claim. At best it can be argued that they knew Jewish Hellenistic traditions, traditions about which we know almost nothing for the period concerned as literary evidence for Jewish Hellenism disappears after the writings of Josephus.
