Test Evaluation Metrics and Test Case Prioritization in the Dynamics of Software Testing

Test-case prioritization is to schedule the execution order of test cases so as to maximize some objective (e.g., revealing faults early). The existing test-case prioritization approaches separate the process of test-case prioritization and the process of test-case execution by presenting the execution order of all test cases before programmers start running test cases. As the execution information of the modified program is not available for the existing test-case prioritization approaches, these approaches mainly rely on only the execution information of the previous program before modification. To address this problem, we present an adaptive test-case prioritization approach, which determines the execution order of test cases simultaneously during the execution of test cases. In particular, the adaptive approach selects test cases based on their fault-detection capability, which is calculated based on the output of selected test cases. As soon as a test case is selected and runs, the fault-detection capability of each unselected test case is modified according to the output of the latest selected test case. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive approach, we conducted an experimental study on eight C programs and four Java programs. The experimental results show that the adaptive approach is usually significantly better than the total test-case prioritization approach and competitive to the additional test-case prioritization approach. Moreover, the adaptive approach is better than the additional approach on some subjects (e.g, replace and schedule).

Regression testing is an important and costly strategy in software testing. To decrease its cost, many methods have been proposed including the test case prioritization methods. The aim of the prioritization methods is to define an ideal order of test cases that allows for higher coverage and early fault detection with minimal number of executed test cases. However, the problem with most of the existing test case prioritization methods is the random sorting of test cases when two or more test cases record equal priority values. In this paper, the effectiveness of an enhanced weighted method using a unique priority value, UniVal, is proposed. Unival prioritizes test cases based on code coverage criteria with information from history of previous executions. In addition, a controlled experiment was executed, and the results were statistically analyzed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results indicates better performance with regard to prioritize test cases and achieve higher APFD values.  Â

Test case prioritization technique aims to improve test efficiency rate by sorting test cases according to some specific criteria. Requirements play an important role throughout software testing. This paper proposes a test case prioritization method based on requirement correlations. Prioritization of requirements is defined by the users and the developers. This technique focuses on requirements with detected faults after the last regression testing. By readjusting prioritization of fault-related requirements, it can optimize the order of test cases. Experimental results show that this technique exactly contributes to achieving high testing efficiency.

Background & Problem Statement - Software testing is a critical phase in the software development lifecycle (SDLC), ensuring that applications function correctly, meet user requirements, and maintain high- quality standards. Traditional software testing approaches, including manual testing and rule-based automation, often face challenges in scalability, efficiency, and adaptability to dynamic software environments. Traditional testing methods are overwhelmed by complex software systems which slows down defect detection and extends both testing costs and release schedules. Machine Learning (ML) has emerged as a transformative solution, introducing predictive and adaptive capabilities that optimize test case selection, automate defect detection, and enhance overall software quality assurance (QA). This study explores the integration of ML in software testing, addressing the challenges of traditional QA methodologies and demonstrating how AI-driven frameworks improve testing efficiency. Methodology - To investigate the impact of ML in software testing, this research adopts a systematic approach by analyzing ML-driven test automation techniques, including predictive testing, adaptive test execution, and automated test case generation. Research reviews how Google Microsoft Facebook IBM and Deep Code put ML-based quality assurance frameworks into operation. The study leverages supervised learning, reinforcement learning, deep learning, and NLP-based techniques to demonstrate how ML models predict software defects, dynamically adapt test cases, and optimize testing resources. The research tests how ML-based testing models operate within CI/CD pipelines to improve ongoing testing and deployment flow. Analysis & Results - The analysis of ML-driven software testing reveals that predictive analytics improves early defect detection rates. It helps developers spend 37% less time debugging their work. Adaptive testing models, including self-healing test scripts, minimize maintenance costs by 50% and enhance test reliability in agile environments. The integration of NLP-based test case generation increases test coverage. NLP technology enables automatic connection between requirements and test cases at 89% success rate. Additionally, reinforcement learning techniques improve test case selection, reducing redundant test executions by 43%. Our research shows different ML methods work well to lessen incorrect error alerts. ML integration for QA surely increasing defect prediction accuracy and optimizing test execution time. Findings & Contributions - This research contributes to the field of AI-driven software testing by providing a comprehensive framework for ML-based QA methodologies. Our study shows that machine learning helps find more software problems better adapts test cases and lowers testing expenses to solve present software development needs. The study also identifies critical challenges, including data availability, model interpretability, and computational overhead, suggesting future research directions in Explainable AI (XAI), hybrid AI-ML testing models, and AI-driven security testing. As the industry moves toward AI-first software testing, this research paves the way for fully autonomous QA frameworks, enabling intelligent, scalable, and cost- effective software validation techniques. Many times, it seems that, data integration left behind the software testing phase and it is directly focused at software deployment or delivery time. To avoid issues due to lack of data integration, we developed algorithm which can track integration of test case prioritization along with trustworthiness of test case execution. Test case prioritization based on Artificial Fish School Algorithm

Background: Regression testing is very important stage of software maintenance and evolution phase. The software keeps on updating and to preserve the software quality, it needs to be retested every time it is updated. Due to limited resources, complete testing of the software becomes tedious task. The probable solution to this problem is to execute those test cases first that are more important prior to less important test cases. Objective: Optimization methods need to be acquired for efficient test case prioritization in minimum time, while maintaining the quality of the software. Various nature-inspired algorithms like genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization, etc. have been applied for prioritizing test cases. In this paper, we have applied a relatively new nature-inspired optimization method, namely, Bat algorithm that utilizes the echolocation, loudness and pulse emission rate of bats in prioritizing the test cases. Methods: The proposed algorithm is experimented on sample case study of timetable management system and evaluated with the help of popular evaluation metric Average Percentage of Fault Detection. Results: Results have been compared with the baseline approaches i.e. untreated, random and reverse prioritization and well-established optimization method i.e. genetic algorithm and we have found a considerable increase in the value of evaluation metric. Conclusion: This preliminary study shows that the bat algorithm have great potential to solve test case prioritization problems.

Regression testing is important for maintaining software quality. However, the cost of regression testing is relatively high. Test case prioritization is one way to reduce this cost. Test case prioritization techniques sort test cases for regression testing based on their importance. In this paper, we design and implement a test case prioritization method based on the location of a change. The method consists of three steps: (1) clustering test cases, (2) prioritizing the clusters with respect to the relevance of the clusters to a code change, and (3) test case prioritization within each cluster based on metrics. We propose a metric for measuring test case importance based on Requirement Complexity, Code Complexity, and Code Coverage. To evaluate our method, we apply it on a launch interceptor problem program, and measure the inclusiveness and precision for clusters of test cases with respect to code change in specific test cases. Our results show that our proposed change-based prioritization method increases the likelihood of executing more relevant test cases earlier.

HSP: A hybrid selection and prioritisation of regression test cases based on information retrieval and code coverage applied on an industrial case study

The validation of modified software depends on the success of Regression testing. For this, test cases are selected in such a way that can detect a maximum number of faults at the earliest stage of software development. The selection process in which the most beneficial test case are executed first is known as test case prioritization which improves the performance of execution of test cases in a specific or appropriate order. Many optimizing techniques like greedy algorithm, genetic algorithm, and metaheuristic search techniques have been used by many researchers for test case prioritization and optimization. This research paper presents a test case prioritization and optimization method using genetic algorithm by taking different factors of test cases like statement coverage data, requirements factors, risk exposure, and execution time.

Test case prioritization techniques attempt to reorder test cases in a manner that increases the rate at which faults are detected during regression testing. Coverage-based test case prioritization techniques typically use one of two overall strategies: a total strategy or an additional strategy . These strategies prioritize test cases based on the total number of code (or code-related) elements covered per test case and the number of additional (not yet covered) code (or code-related) elements covered per test case, respectively. In this article, we present a unified test case prioritization approach that encompasses both the total and additional strategies. Our unified test case prioritization approach includes two models ( basic and extended ) by which a spectrum of test case prioritization techniques ranging from a purely total to a purely additional technique can be defined by specifying the value of a parameter referred to as the f p value. To evaluate our approach, we performed an empirical study on 28 Java objects and 40 C objects, considering the impact of three internal factors (model type, choice of f p value, and coverage type) and three external factors (coverage granularity, test case granularity, and programming/testing paradigm), all of which can be manipulated by our approach. Our results demonstrate that a wide range of techniques derived from our basic and extended models with uniform f p values can outperform purely total techniques and are competitive with purely additional techniques. Considering the influence of each internal and external factor studied, the results demonstrate that various values of each factor have nontrivial influence on test case prioritization techniques.

Test case prioritization technology improves the efficiency of software testing by optimizing the execution order of test cases, which is an important research topic of software regression testing. In order to solve the problem of requirement-based test case prioritization, this paper proposed a solution based on ant colony optimization algorithm and gave its two different implementation methods: distance-based and index-based implementation. Firstly, a general indicator based on requirements was designed to evaluate the test cases. Secondly, the concept of test case attractivity was proposed, and the definition of the distance between test cases was given based on it. Finally, the main design strategies such as the pheromone update strategy, the optimal solution update strategy, and the local optimal mutation strategy were given. The experimental results show that the method has good global optimization ability, and its overall effect is better than particle swarm optimization algorithm, genetic algorithm and random testing.

Software testing is a very important and crucial phase of software development life cycle. In order to develop good quality software, the effectiveness of the software has been tested. Test cases and test suites are prepared for testing, and it should be done in minimum time for which test case prioritization and optimization techniques are required. The main aim of test case prioritization is to test software in minimum time and with maximum efficiency, so for this there are many techniques, and to develop a new or better technique, existing techniques should be known. This paper presents a review on the techniques of test case prioritization and optimization. This paper also provides analysis of the literature available for the same.
