The Application of Data Mining Technology in the Customer Churn Prewarning

In today's conditions, customer loyalty has gained importance with the increase in the competitive environment between companies, the development of marketing strategies and the improvement of companies. Therefore, it is essential to acquire customers for a company to survive. Retaining an existing customer in the telecommunication sector is less costly than gaining a new customer. Customer churn analysis is the process of predicting customers with high abandonment requests by examining the offers and utilizable behaviors. Customer churn analysis provides services to develop various campaigns aiming to increase the company’s loyalty by predicting the customers who are planning to move to another company. In this way, it gives the company a competitive advantage. This study aims to make predictions by developing models for customer churns through data mining and machine learning methods in the telecommunication sector. In addition, we believe that the application in this article will contribute to data analysts and academicians who will want to analyze customer churn with different data sets in telecommunication and other sectors in the future. The analysis in this study is carried out on a data set obtained from an open-access database, including 20 transaction records for the customer from 7043 customers and whether the customer left the company. Among the data mining methods, Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Multilayer Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are modeled in open-source Phyton environment. The results have shown that ANN has fared better at classifying customers than other machine learning methods.

With the rising growth of the telecommunication industry, the customer churn problem has grown in significance as well. One of the most critical challenges in the data and voice telecommunication service industry is retaining customers, thus reducing customer churn by increasing customer satisfaction. Telecom companies have depended on historical customer data to measure customer churn. However, historical data does not reveal current customer satisfaction or future likeliness to switch between telecom companies. The related research reveals that many studies have focused on developing churner prediction models based on historical data. These models face delay issues and lack timelines for targeting customers in real-time. In addition, these models lack the ability to tap into Arabic language social media for real-time analysis. As a result, the design of a customer churn model based on real-time analytics is needed. Therefore, this study offers a new approach to using social media mining to predict customer churn in the telecommunication field. This represents the first work using Arabic Twitter mining to predict churn in Saudi Telecom companies. The newly proposed method proved its efficiency based on various standard metrics and based on a comparison with the ground-truth actual outcomes provided by a telecom company.

Customer churn is one of the most critical issues faced by thetelecommunications industry. In the telecommunications industry, it is more expensive to acquire a new customer as compared to retaining the current one. Hence, customer churn prediction is currently the main mechanism employed by the industry in order to prevent customers from churning. The objective of churn prediction is to identify customers that are going to leave the telecommunications service provider in advance. Customer churn prediction would allow the telecommunications service provider to plan their customer retention strategy. The high volume of data generated by the industry, with the help of data mining techniques implementation, becomes the main asset for predicting customer churn. Due to this reason, recent literature of different data mining techniques and most popular data mining algorithms for customer churn prediction are reviewed in this paper. Additionally, recent literature on newly developed algorithms based on the popular algorithms are also reviewed.

Customer churn is a key issue in the telecom industry and has a significant impact on the revenue of related companies. For telecom companies, establishing an accurate customer churn prediction model is crucial for retaining existing customers. Therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable prediction models to effectively manage and reduce churn rates. This study explores how to use machine learning technology to predict customer churn based on various customer characteristics and usage patterns, and its application in accurately predicting customer churn based on demographic data, service usage behavior, and billing information. Through systematic analysis of model performance, the advantages and disadvantages of each method are highlighted, with particular emphasis on the superior predictive power of the integrated method when dealing with imbalanced data sets. This proves the potential of these methods in accurately predicting customer churn behavior, thereby providing relevant companies with methods to retain customers. In addition, the study explored the economic implications of the accuracy of attrition predictions and advocated the use of lower-cost methods to ensure the rational allocation of resources.

The telecommunication sector becomes popular in recent years and service companies suffer from a loss of valued customers to competitors. In the operational area, customer churn is a challenging issue, which makes companies, loses customers, and therefore is of bigger issue for the industry. Recent technologies and competitors were developing quickly and churn prediction becomes essential for telecom companies. Customer Churn Prediction (CCP) models offer precise detection of significant churners and therefore a retaining solution can be offered to them. Data analytics and machine learning (ML) models can be designed and used for churn investigation to reduce customer churns and improve profit. In this aspect, this article investigates a novel Tomtit Flock Optimization with Deep Variational Autoencoder for Customer Churn Prediction (TFODVAE-CCP) in the telecommunication sector. The presented TFODVAE-CCP technique mainly concentrates on the identification and classification of customer churns. To accomplish this, the presented TFODVAE-CCP technique performs data pre-processing at the primary stage. Next, the TFODVAE-CCP technique employs TFO algorithm to elect an optimal subset of features and thereby improve classification accuracy. Finally, the DVAE method can be leveraged for classifying churner/non-churner. A detailed set of experimental analyses is made on telecommunication churn dataset and the results illustrate the betterment of the TFODVAE-CCP method over other existing models.

Customer churn prediction (CCP) is a crucial problem in telecom industry which helps to improve the revenue of the company and prevent the loss of customers. Customer churn is an important issue in service sector with highly competitive services. At the same time, the prediction of users who are probably leaving the company can be identified at an earlier stage to prevent loss of revenue. Several works have used machine learning (ML) techniques for predicting the existence of customer churn in different industries. With this motivation, this paper presents an optimal long, short-term memory with stacked autoencoder (OLSTM-SAE) technique for CCP in telecom industry. The OLSTM-SAE technique encompasses three subprocesses namely preprocessing, classification, and parameter optimization. The OLSTM-SAE technique classifies the preprocessed data into churn and non-churn customers. In addition, the grey wolf optimization (GWO) technique is used to adjust the variables involved in the LSTM-SAE model. For examining the enhanced performance of the OLSTM-SAE technique, an extensive simulation analysis takes place, and the outcomes are inspected with respect to various measures. The experimental results highlighted the betterment of the OLSTM-SAE technique in terms of different evaluation parameters.

Nowadays, telecommunication markets are becoming more and more competitive, and customer churn is becoming more and more serious. In the tough competitive mobile market, Customer Churn Management is becoming more and more critical. In developing countries, most customers switch service providers because of good promotional incentives and lower monthly costs offered by competitive service providers. How to predict customer churn quickly and accurately becomes very important. In this paper, the researchers successfully analyzed the customer churn using big data feature analysis and multi-feature analysis. User data were modeled by XGBoost algorithm. The model is optimized repeatedly with GridSearchCV as a parameter tool. The accuracy of the model on the test set is 85.1%. The researchers predicted about 11000 customer lists per month that may be about to churn. Using K-means clustering method, 11000 churn target customers per month were classified into three categories and telecom companies are suggested to take some solutions which are found by feature analysis to retain customers. This big data analysis can be used to retain customers for the telecom industry.

Background: China telecom is the largest integrated information service provider in China, its business volume all over the world. It is interesting to note that China Unicom and other telecom companies have carried out similar businesses one after another. How to prevent the loss of existing customers in the fierce competition is an important issue for telecom companies to think about.Methods: This work aims to build a variety of algorithm models for target optimization and use them to predict whether telecom companies will lose customers, respond to the early warning of customer churn, and then implement active retention measures. Data characteristics affect the final loss prediction effect. In this study, the weight contribution rate of each characteristic variable is obtained by calculating the evidence weight and then the characteristic variable information value so as to optimize the prediction accuracy of the algorithm model. Through calculation, we noted the weight contribution rate of five characteristic variables to be the highest. Including total day charge, total day minutes customer service calls, international plan, and number of voicemail messages, linear regression, decision tree, Bayesian, artificial neural network, and support vector machine are used to predict customer churn on the customer dataset published by telecom companies. The experimental results are used to test the performance of the algorithm model.Results: It is found that the characteristic variables calculated after optimization are put into multialgorithm models to predict the churn of telecom customers. Finally, it is found that it is better for the optimized characteristic variables to use the decision tree algorithm model to predict the loss of telecom customers.

Introduction. Customer churn is one of the key challenges in the telecommunications sector, significantly impacting companies' financial performance. Losing customers leads to substantial economic losses, as acquiring new users is typically more expensive than retaining existing ones. This creates a need for the development of effective analytical approaches to predict customer churn and identify the factors influencing it. Objective. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of survival analysis methods in predicting customer churn in the telecommunications sector. The primary objective is to identify key factors affecting churn rates and evaluate the impact of targeted retention strategies on customer behaviour. Methodology. The study employs survival analysis methods to evaluate customer churn dynamics. The Kaplan-Meier estimator is used to analyse the temporal patterns of customer retention, identifying high-risk periods. The Cox proportional hazards model is applied to determine the influence of various factors on churn probability. The dataset consists of real-world telecommunications customer data, including demographic characteristics, contract details, and financial indicators. Preprocessing steps include data cleaning, feature selection, and transformation of categorical variables into numerical format. Model performance is evaluated using metrics such as the Concordance Index (C-index) and Brier Score. Finally, A/B testing is conducted to assess the effectiveness of retention strategies in reducing customer churn. Results. The findings indicate that the highest risk of churn occurs within the first 20 months after subscription activation. It was determined that long-term contracts and high-quality service reduce the likelihood of churn, whereas high monthly costs and certain payment methods increase it. The developed predictive models achieved an accuracy level of 85–87%. Implemented retention strategies within A/B testing resulted in an increase in the retention rate from 74% to 91%. The proposed methods can be applied by telecommunications companies, financial institutions, and other businesses operating in the subscription-based service industry to enhance loyalty programs and reduce customer churn.

With the rising competition in business, particularly in the telecommunications industry, there has been a growing emphasis on churn prediction. This is attributed to the higher cost involved in attracting new customers than retaining the remaining ones. In telecom churn analysis, the primary goal is to accurately estimate churn behavior by identifying customers who are at risk of leaving. Another objective is to determine the primary reasons for customer churn. Manually predicting the churn in telecommunications is expensive, tedious, and time-consuming. To relieve the burden, machine learning algorithms are introduced to tackle this problem. This article examines several machine learning algorithms for predicting customer churn, including Random Forest, Decision Tree, and Naive Bayes. By constructing and comparing these classification models, the effectiveness of these algorithms is demonstrated. The aim of this work is to examine and compare the effectiveness of various models according to accuracy, which can be applied in real-life scenarios. The result shows that Naive Bayes outperforms the other models.

The increase in mobile phone subscriptions in recent years, has led to near market saturation in the telecom industry. As a result, it has become harder for telecom providers to acquire new customers, and the need for retaining existing ones has become of paramount importance. Because of fierce competition between different telecom providers and because the ease of which customers can move from one provider to another, all telecom service providers suffer from customer churn. In this paper, we propose a dyadic based churn prediction model, DyadChurn, where customer churn is modeled through social influence that propagates in the telecom network over strong social ties. We propose a novel method for evaluating social tie strength between telecom customers. We then, incorporate strong social ties in an influence propagation model to predict the set of future potential churners. The evaluation of the proposed dyadic based churn prediction model has been done using a real dataset, from one of the largest telecom companies in Egypt. The experimental results showed that the length of calls between customers is the most effective attribute in predicting social influence that result in churning. The results also showed that strong social ties (as opposed to weak ties) were the most effective ties in determining churn. Using strong social ties only enhanced the prediction accuracy (in terms of the lift curve) by more than 20%, when compared to a diffusion model.

Customer churn prediction plays a vital role in modern business, accurately influencing strategic and operational decisions that influence customer loyalty to a service. Customer churn focuses on customer retention being more profitable than attracting new customers because long-term customers provide lower profits and costs while losing customers increases the costs and need to attract new customers. However, customer churn still occurs frequently and cannot be predicted. If customer churn is left unchecked, it will endanger the company or banking industry because it can cause loss of income, damage reputation, and decrease market share. Random Forest, a data mining technique, was used in this research because of its ability to predict and handle many variables. This research aims to predict customer churn using the Random Forest method with datasets from Europe, especially France, Spain, and Germany, hoping to benefit the banking industry by identifying customers at high risk of abandoning services. This research is expected to benefit business people from customer churn predictions. Especially in the banking industry, it can help identify customers at high risk of abandoning service. Thus, companies can take appropriate steps to retain these customers, increase customer retention, strengthen customer loyalty and optimize their business performance. The results of this research are an accurate system for predicting customer churn in the future. The research obtained accuracy results of 87% in predicting customer churn using accuracy testing in the form of a confusion matrix.

Recently, telecommunication companies have been paying more attention toward the problem of identification of customer churn behavior. In business, it is well known for service providers that attracting new customers is much more expensive than retaining existing ones. Therefore, adopting accurate models that are able to predict customer churn can effectively help in customer retention campaigns and maximizing the profit. In this paper we will utilize an ensemble of Multilayer perceptrons(MLP) whose training is obtained using negative correlation learning(NCL) for predicting customer churn in a telecommunication company. Experiments results confirm that NCL based MLP ensemble can achievebetter generalization performance (high churn rate) compared with ensembleof MLP without NCL (flat ensemble) and other common datamining techniques used for churn analysis.

The paper proposes that the terminal customization is one of the development trends of the third generation (3G) telecommunications industry in the future aiming at the existing problem of the independent development mode between telecommunications operators and terminal manufacturers. It establishes the principal-agent model of telecommunications operators and terminal manufacturers based on service customization, designs the optimized incentive contract which telecommunications operators give terminal manufacturers, analyzes the relationships among the effort degree, ability and cost coefficient of telecommunications operators and terminal manufacturers and incentive intensity, compares that the change of each parameter results in the influence of the incentive intensity and both profits using numerical analysis, which provides theory evidence for telecommunications operators to stimulate terminal manufacturers to participate for the service customization.
