Abstract

Whereas integration of corporal experience into musical pedagogy is developing in many countries, in France an intellectual approach is still common practice allowing one to perform studies with naïve populations. To shed light on how body awareness and perception contribute to root kinesthetic imagery and build the instrumental technique, we present a qualitative study with young pianists enrolled in a French Conservatory. Our work reveals that the degree of body-awareness is linked to age and that verbalization on the use of their bodies constitutes a sensory awakening, leads to refining their proprioception and to better understanding the mind-body-sound interaction.
