The Swift Programming Language

This thesis proposes a novel way of performing type checking, whose results are incremental, depending on the provided local information. This new way of type checking is called co-contextual, where all context information of expressions, methods, classes, etc., is removed. Instead, we introduce corresponding structures using requirements. Standard type systems are translated to the co-contextual ones systematically using dualism as technique. Type systems play an important role to prevent execution errors from occurring during runtime. They are used to check programs statically for potential errors. Programs are type checked against a given set of rules. Depending on these rules programs are well-typed or not. The set of these rules is called typing rules. Each type rule associates types to the constructs of a program given a certain context. There can be different forms of contexts, depending on the features of the typed programming language. Functional languages use a typing context of variables and their types; object-oriented (OO) languages use additional class tables. Class tables are used for example to ensure that method and class declarations are well-typed. Type checking is performed top-down. While traversing the syntax tree of a program, typing contexts are extended with information on the expressions and their types. In case of OO, class tables are extended with clauses from class declarations, including the class members, i.e., fields, methods, or constructors. Contexts are passed through the nodes of the syntax tree in order to coordinate type checking between them. Therefore, while traversing the syntax tree top-down, the type checker creates dependencies between otherwise independent subexpressions. This way, it inhibits incrementalization and parallelization of type checking. That is, a change to a node of the syntax tree would require to redo the type check of the whole syntax tree. In this thesis a novel formulation of type systems is proposed, in order to remove dependencies between subexpressions. We propose a co-contextual formulation of typing rules that depends only on the local program constructs, e.g., expressions, methods, classes. The co-contextual typing rules have as conclusion a type and sets of requirements. That is, contexts and class tables are replaced by the dual concept of context and class table requirements. In addition, operations on contexts and class tables are replaced by new dual operations on requirements. The co-contextual type checker traverses a syntax tree bottom-up and merges context requirements of independently checked subexpressions. We describe a method for systematically constructing a co-contextual formulation of type rules from a regular context-based formulation and we show how co-contextual type rules give rise to incremental type checking. We derive co-contextual type checkers for functional and OO languages. As a representative of functional languages we consider PCF and extensions of it: records, parametric polymorphism, structural subtyping and let-polymorphism. Also, we investigate featherweight java (FJ) as the basis of OO languages and extensions of it: method overloading and generics. We build a1 co-contextual type checker for FJ enabling key features of OO languages: subtype polymorphism, nominal typing and implementation inheritance. The dualism between the co-contextual and contextual type systems preserves the correctness of the contextual calculus. That is, we prove the correctness of the co-contextual calculus via the equivalence between contextual type rules and their co-contextual formulations. We implemented an incremental type checker for PCF along with a performance evaluation showing that co-contextual type checking has performance comparable to standard context-based type checking, and incrementalization can improve performance significantly. Regarding FJ, we implemented a co-contextual type checker with incrementalization and compared its performance against javac on a number of realistic programs. Our performance evaluation shows significant speedups for the co-contextual type checker with incrementalization in comparison to javac.

Abstract. At a fundamental level, functional and object-oriented programming languages are all ‘higher-order’, in the sense that they support computing with values that are themselves pieces of program code encapsulated with a local environment. In functional languages these ‘active’ values are functions, while in object-oriented languages they are objects. Both styles of higher-order language claim to provide good support for writing adaptable programs, but functional and object-oriented languages achieve this adaptability in different ways: functional programs rely on parameterisation at the value, type and module level, while object-oriented languages rely primarily on subtyping and implementation inheritance. Here we compare these two approaches, mainly in terms of the features and properties of their type systems, and consider the benefits and disadvantages of unifying (or merging) the two paradigms by adding object-oriented features to ML as a base language. We argue that while some of the simpler aspects of object-oriented languages are compatible with ML, adding a full- edged class-based object system to ML leads to an excessively complex type system and relatively little expressive gain, especially if we aim to preserve that mostly functional style of programming that is a major advantage of ML.

Object-oriented programming languages are suitable for describing real-world objects, functional programming languages for algebraic values. In this paper we propose an object-oriented functional programming language, called TOFL, which combines many desired properties of the two paradigms. In particular, TOFL unifies object classes, inheritance, (method) redefinitions and late binding as in object-oriented languages, algebraic data types, higher-order functions, type classes and type inference (without type reconstruction in this paper) as in functional languages. We translate TOFL into a stratified and explicitly typed λ-calculus T with overloaded functions, where redefinitions and late binding become late binding of overloaded functions. The operational semantics of T gives a semantics and a simple prototyping implementation of TOFL.

Nowadays, when algorithms are combined with programming languages, great technological works are emerging. Examples of these works continue to differentiate and increase in military and police systems, agricultural applications, image processing applications, data engineering field, language processing works, and cyber security applications. With the differentiation of the areas of use of algorithms, the programming languages used on these platforms are also changing. Python is an object-oriented and functional modern programming language. It is ideal for beginners due to its readability and ease of use. C# is a simple, modern, object-oriented, and type-safe programming language that combines the high productivity of application development languages with the raw power of C and C++. The Java programming language, on the other hand, shares many features that are common to most programming languages used today. Since it is designed with the structures of C and C++, where their languages are similar, the language is familiar to C and C++ programmers (Lerdorf, 2002; Hejlsberg, 2003; Arnold, 2005; Deitel, 2004; Kelly, 2016; Gavrilović, 2018; Pala, 2019; Chollet, 2021; Chen, 2023).

Functional programming languages are well-suited for developing compilers, and compilers for functional languages are often themselves written in a functional language. Functional abstractions, such as monads, allow abstracting away some of the repetitive structure of a compiler, removing boilerplate code and making extensions simpler. Even so, functional languages are rarely used to implement compilers for languages of other paradigms.

Chapter 5 discusses some fundamentals of object-oriented programming languages (Section 5.1) and distributed programming languages (Section 5.4). It also specifically summarizes the major features of two object-oriented programming languages: c++ (Section 5.2) and SMALLTALK (Section 5.3), and one distributed programming language, namely, OCCAM and its predecessor CSP (Section 5.5). Although there are other object-oriented languages (e.g., ACTOR 1 and EFFEL 2 and distributed programming languages (see Section 5.4), these three languages are chosen to illustrate some basic ideas behind object-oriented programming and distributed programming. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with c.

The generic programming approach is popular in functional languages (for example, OCaml, Haskell). In essence, it is a compile-time generation of code that performs transformations of user-defined data types. The generated code can carry out various kinds of transformations of the values. Usually, transformations are represented as functions that implement algorithms of transformation. New transformations could be built from these transformation functions and user-defined ones. The representation based on functions has a downside: functions behave as final representations, and hence it is not possible to modify the behavior of the already built function. If the current set of transformations does not suit well, software developers are obliged to write a completely distinct transformation, even in the case when the new transformation is almost identical to the existing one. This work proposes to build transformations that are extensible after construction. The object-oriented programming paradigm will be followed, transformations will be represented not as functions but as objects. Instead of calling a transformation function, one of the object’s methods will be called. The transformation itself will be split into methods. The extensibility is supported by adding new methods and overriding existing ones. In this paper, the authors propose an approach to represent transformations as objects in the OCaml functional programming language. Every alternative in data type definition has a corresponding object method. This design allows the construction of many distinct transformations. The cases where too many methods are not desirable are also discussed. The method is applicable to represent extensible transformations for polymorphic variant data types in OCaml when other methods fail to do it. The method is not bound to any particular domain. It allows the creation of extensible transformations in OCaml. It could be ported to other functional languages supporting object-oriented programming.

Computer programming language is the foundation of developing computer application technologies and software. C language and object-oriented programming language belong to commonly-utilized advanced computer languages, and they have certain relevance in logic. Meanwhile, they have their own advantages. In other words, C language and object-oriented programming language possess both relevance and differences in the aspects of selection and application. The work discussed the compiling essentials of C language and object-oriented programming language. Besides, the differences and applicability of those two languages in the aspect of programming were further analyzed.

Functional programming (FP) is regularly touted as the way forward for bringing parallel, concurrent, and distributed programming to the mainstream. The popularity of the rationale behind this viewpoint has even led to a number of object-oriented (OO) programming languages outside the Smalltalk tradition adopting functional features such as lambdas and thereby function closures. However, despite this established viewpoint of FP as an enabler, reliably distributing function closures over a network, or using them in concurrent environments nonetheless remains a challenge across FP and OO languages. This paper takes a step towards more principled distributed and concurrent programming by introducing a new closure-like abstraction and type system, called spores, that can guarantee closures to be serializable, thread-safe, or even have custom user-defined properties. Crucially, our system is based on the principle of encoding type information corresponding to captured variables in the type of a spore. We prove our type system sound, implement our approach for Scala, evaluate its practicality through a small empirical study, and show the power of these guarantees through a case analysis of real-world distributed and concurrent frameworks that this safe foundation for closures facilitates.

Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a declarative programming paradigm which allows for easy modeling and solving of hard problems that are often cumbersome to implement in object-oriented programming languages. It was successfully applied to a range of applications from artificial intelligence, such as combinatorial or scheduling problems. On the other hand, real-world applications for end-users usually consist also of components which cannot be (easily) solved in ASP, such as user interaction via graphical user interfaces, presentation of results, and interfaces to data sources. Instead, realizing such components is typically in the domain of traditional (object-oriented) programming languages. To address this issue, we introduce a language which allows for a formal specification of the input and output of an ASP program, which can be exploited to easily interface the program from object-oriented languages using a dedicated library. While the language is independent from the concrete object-oriented language, we also provide and present a reference implementation as a Python library. We then discuss some applications which can be realized on top of our approach.

Generic Programming enables program constructs to be reused in a variety of situations. In programming languages, idea of generic programming is being opted through a variety of generic mechanisms. Generic mechanisms are either directly applied to pre-existing language constructs or it provides its own components for generic implementation. In this paper, we present such generic mechanisms in an organized way such that it appears as "one mechanism intensify other". Our aim is to exhibit generic evolution among mainstream object oriented programming languages (OOPLs). Hence, we analyze such approaches for better expressiveness and type-safety of generic programming as they evolved in OOPLs. This brief review article will help developers and researchers to precisely understand the generic mechanism in mainstream OOPLs.

MultiJava is a conservative extension of the Java programming language that adds symmetric multiple dispatch and open classes. Among other benefits, multiple dispatch provides a solution to the binary method problem. Open classes provide a solution to the extensibility problem of object-oriented programming languages, allowing the modular addition of both new types and new operations to an existing type hierarchy. This article illustrates and motivates the design of MultiJava and describes its modular static typechecking and modular compilation strategies. Although MultiJava extends Java, the key ideas of the language design are applicable to other object-oriented languages, such as C# and C++, and even, with some modifications, to functional languages such as ML.This article also discusses the variety of application domains in which MultiJava has been successfully used by others, including pervasive computing, graphical user interfaces, and compilers. MultiJava allows users to express desired programming idioms in a way that is declarative and supports static typechecking, in contrast to the tedious and type-unsafe workarounds required in Java. MultiJava also provides opportunities for new kinds of extensibility that are not easily available in Java.

Scala is a new programming language developed at EPFL and incorporating the most important concepts of object-oriented and functional languages. It aims at integrating well with the Java and .NET platforms: their respective libraries are accessible without glue code, and the compiler can produce programs for both virtual machines. This thesis focuses on the compilation of two important concepts of Scala : mixin inheritance and run time types. The compilation techniques are presented in the context of the Java virtual machine, but could be adapted easily to other similar environments. Mixin inheritance is a relatively recent form of inheritance, offering new capabilities compared to single inheritance, without the complexity of multiple inheritance. We propose two implementation techniques for mixin inheritance: code copying and delegation. The implementation used in the Scala compiler is then presented and justified. Run time types make it possible for a program to examine the type of its values during execution. This possibility is interesting in itself, offering new capabilities to the programmer. Furthermore, run time types are also required to implement other high level concepts, like pattern matching, type-safe serialisation and reflection. We propose an implementation technique based on the representation of types as values, and show how to use the run time types of the underlying virtual machine to implement those of Scala. The techniques presented in this thesis have been implemented in our Scala compiler, scalac. This enabled us to evaluate these techniques, in particular their impact on the performances of programs. This evaluation was performed on several real, non-trivial programs.
