The theoretical framework of knowledge sharing in wireless organizational memory systems

This paper uses fractal theory to analyze interorganizational information systems (IOS). Firstly, IOS’s structure has fractal characteristics of self-similarity, self-optimization and self-organization, consequently, gives the concept and definition of fractal interorganizational information systems (FIOS). Thirdly, builds IOS topological structure fits actual needs based on Diffused-Limited Aggregation (DLA) model to optimize the growth rule of IOS, then, designs six topological structures of FIOS and estimates approximatively their fractal dimension values. Finally, gives fractal interorganizational information systems application to optimize the supply chain network structure to improve operation efficiency.

Collaboration is now considered as a strategic advantage for enhancing effectiveness in Inter-Organisational Information System (IOIS) implementation, particularly in electronic government (e-government). As governments strive to improve their service delivery systems with constraint resources, IOIS was seen as the key factor for efficacy. Findings in this study revealed that the rhetoric and the reality of IOIS implementation were misaligned. Social and human factors were revealed as pertinent for this disparity and good governance was seen as the redeeming factor for IOIS implementation. Understanding these factors is critical in improving the probability of success in future IOIS implementation.

Despite extensive research and practitioner literature on inter-organizational information systems (IOIS), our understanding of non-adoption still has some under-explored issues. This paper offers an explanation of non-adoption that focuses on the potential structural changes that IOIS adoption entails; in particular, we contend that the contradictions between the initial social structure and the structure enacted in the use of an IOIS can be a cause of non-adoption. This paper analyses adoption from a logic of opposition where non-adoption occurs because forces of transformation are offset by forces of persistence. Relying on the concepts of social structure, duality of structure, and structural contradiction from Structuration theory, we develop a framework that categorizes the underlying social structure where an IOIS is to be adopted, and formulate some theoretical propositions. From a practitioner perspective, this paper contends that the fact that IOIS management uncovers the contradictions in the social structure that result from IOIS adoption can help avoid dead ends. Accordingly, this framework, which can be used as a coarse-grained picture for anticipating adoption problems, can inform managers when devising an IOIS implementation strategy.

As corporations rely on collaborations with partners to enhance their competiveness, they use interorganizational information systems (IOIS) as a powerful tool to link with their partners in the supply chain. The purpose of this study is to measure IOIS performance in the supply chain. The proposed framework considers both internal and external organisational perspectives and is based on the balanced scorecard. This study also uses experts’ pairwise comparisons in the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process approach to consider the relative weight or importance of diverse indicators of the framework. Then, this study applies the proposed framework to the Taiwanese information technology industry. The results provide references for managers and future researches when assessing IOIS performance in the supply chain. The proposed model can serve as a useful instrument for helping managers to better understand the main facets of IOIS performance, to be more capable of prioritising improvement projects, and to adopt the right solutions to enhance overall performance.

Business integration is no longer optional. With the opening of local and world markets to international competition, businesses have been actively looking at managing their costs, their competition, and their customers' expectations. Integrating business processes amongst partners was deemed as an efficient way to meet these objectives. Amongst various concepts, Inter-Organizational Information System (IOIS) has seen a significant interest from organizations and researchers alike. IOIS is an inter-partners information system that enables adding seamlessness to business processes crossing these partners' systems. The component inside IOIS responsible for the bridging between different partners' systems is the Inter-Organizational Middleware System (IOMS). IOMS is both a technical tool managing communication and data exchange between heterogeneous systems and a business tool proactively participating in the business process. This duality has been a strength but also a problem for IOMS. Indeed, organizations tend to resist updating and upgrading it and in the process causing it to suffer the problem of legacy processes. When these legacy processes become unupgradable, i.e. can no longer be updated using standard methods and tools, the risk to business increases and the cost of keeping these processes functioning becomes excessive. The authors embarked on a four-year journey investigating the problem of Unupgradable Legacy Processes (ULP) in IOMS and propose numerous artifacts addressing various elements of the issue. Riding on these artifacts, this paper looks at their journey from an implementational perspective and assesses lessons learnt for organizations to both manage and avoid ULPs. First, the concept of IOMS is presented. Then the problem of ULPs in IOMS is discussed. Research findings are then presented as lessons learnt before the outcomes are analyzed and limitation of the research are debated.

Information and communication technology (ICT) is applied to support the creation of electronic markets (e-markets). Electronic data interchange (EDI) is the exchange of structured data between information systems of different organizations. EDI is often considered as the first step towards e-markets. In the course of time EDI was extended and interorganizational information systems (IOS) were used to create electronic marketplaces. IOS serve as intermediaries between buyers and sellers. Probably the most well known examples of IOSs are airline reservation systems, which are closed systems having typically a limited number of participants.

Outsourcing of IT-supported business processes (systems development; customer relationship management; helpdesk, etc.) has become increasingly common in Western economies since the late 1990s. Such outsourcing is totally dependent on the provision of inter-organizational information systems (IOSs), which act as the “glue” to link vendor(s) and client(s). Hence understanding the importance of IOSs, and conversely, the downsides or risks they embody, is a critical part of ensuring that outsourcing arrangements are successful. In this chapter the theory behind outsourcing is unpacked, and readers are alerted to sometimes-overlooked aspects of the IOSs on which outsourcing depends. These raise the risks, and reduce the benefits, of outsourcing if they are not well thought through. Decision makers are advised to explicitly include the notion of risk in their outsourcing business cases, including those risks associated with the IOSs that support outsourcing arrangements.

Inteli-Straw (I-S) devices equipped with radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology were developed for gamete and embryo packaging, storage, and information retrieval to benefit the assisted reproduction industry. The aim of this study was to develop and test software for use with I-S technology. Two types of I-S were used, those with 125 and 134 kHz RFID chips, in conjunction with corresponding wireless RFID readers. Two different RFID chip designs were tested: (1) Mini: 0.25-mL straw, RFID tag dimensions = 1.25 × 7 mm and 1.4 × 8 mm; Standard: 0.5-mL straw, RFID tag dimensions = 2 × 12 mm; and (2) µ-chip (Hitachi Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) of 0.4 mm square and 0.06 mm thick. Inteli-Straw RFID chips can be written or have codes that can be associated with information in a database. The present RFID chips were used with the idChamp DX1 Veterinary & Livestock RFID Reader that uses Bluetooth to connect to an iOS platform for cloud computing. The iScanBrowser (Serialio, TX, USA) LED, an app for an iOS platform for use with a wireless RFID reader, was utilised, as well as a proprietary gamete and embryo database software. The present system allows for quickly accessing the RFID codes from the various I-S gamete and embryo packaging (before or after I-S filling) and entering the data into a computer or cloud-based database that can track their status, movement, metadata, and so on. The ability to acquire I-S information with wireless entry into the cloud-based database was achieved. When the RFID wireless reader detects an I-S, the RFID code is displayed almost immediately (~1 s) in a cell in the software system. The I-S (n = 194) were scanned for automatic database entry. For the wireless-enabled proof of concept, 17 scans of I-S [i.e. RFID chip design 1 (n = 15) and design 2 (n = 2)] were made with wireless scanner detection (< 2.5 cm from RFID reader to I-S) and online database entry with a 100% success rate. By using this I-S method, the present invention provides a wireless, cloud-based system for local or remote access, potentially benefiting both laboratory and field logistics. For AI and embryo transfer, the user can scan an I-S and the information is automatically detected; wireless cloud computing and RFID data crosschecking can occur; and the information can be uploaded to a database for later retrieval or analysis. Further, one can use an iphone or ipad to enter other information such as cow number into the cloud-based database during AI or embryo transfer. The present system can allow for near real-time viewing of the data, locally and remotely, or cross-checking of materials and associated information to reduce errors and improve assisted reproductive technology efficiency.

Jointly developing a business case for inter-organizational information systems (IOS) is difficult as: (1) in a business network there are benefits that may not appear at the site where costs occur, and (2) the involved stakeholders often have different or even conflicting organizational goals. This paper analyzes the use of value modeling as a way to address these two challenges and support business case development in a network. We carried out a case study to explore the usefulness of the value modeling logic during an IOS implementation project and conclude that the integration of value modeling into business case development can help to improve the quality of the business case. The value model allows business partners to get insights into the way value is exchanged in the network and check the distribution of costs and benefits, yet doing so without having to reveal confidential details about internal business processes.

As increasing research effort has been made, pervasive computing is on the step closer to realization. Recent technologies have allowed smaller-scale computational devices with characteristics such as low-cost production, low energy consumption and wireless communication to capture and manage information. The technologies of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) are gaining high attention for their promising applications in the field of pervasive computing. Integrating RFID and WSN has been researched extensively in recent years, and deployed in variety of applications. In this paper, WSN architecture, sensor node hardware and RFID system are discussed firstly. According to RFID and WSN architectures and taking into account the specific circumstances of pervasive computing, the integrations of RFID and WSN are classified into three main categories. Each category of integration is described in details through some prototypes.

Workflow management technology has evolved from efficiency-oriented process automation tools to knowledge network building and support systems. This paper presents a workflow management application that collects information-rich business process documents, stores them in an organizational memory system, and informates staff and management in various situations. Combining ASAP R/3 as the workflow machine and IXOAS-ARCHIVE as the knowledge repository of the organizational memory system enabled us to explore powerful options in organizational knowledge distribution. We have been able to document and report organizational performance gains in terms of both process efficiency and knowledge effectiveness.

The literature on the impact of organisational memory on performance in terms of innovation is ambiguous. For example, on one hand organisational memory is recognised as a source of organisational inertia and restricts the range of innovative options. On the other hand, it is argued that innovation can be greatly facilitated by an organisation's ability to retain, evaluate and utilise existing knowledge. These contradictory findings are partly due to the lack of conceptualisation and effective measurement of organisational memory. This paper identifies the underlying factors that affect organisational memory, namely organisational memory (OM) storage, OM flow, OM context, and OM creative combination, which are the integral parts of the organisational memory performance model. The practical implication is that building a large knowledge repository is not a simple task. Companies need to promote a culture of knowledge sharing and learning in order to operate effective organisational memory systems.

Remote sensor network and radio frequency identification innovation are on the world's outskirts. In this age of data innovation, the library as a repository for information gathering and distribution is critical. Innovations such as the personal computer, the Internet, and universal identification have sped the shift to the digital age. New improvements were integrated to configure Radio Frequency Identification remote organization with Wireless sensor network comprising hubs to work on the intelligent administration of the library, relying on manual and data the board. The three modules that were basically researched were writing seek positioning framework, book full casing framework, and programmed getting and returning entry monitor warning framework. The intelligent library framework based on Wireless sensor organization and Radio Frequency Identification incorporated sophisticated RFID and ZigBee technologies for the simplification and inclusion of writing assets, administration interface, and the library's administrative procedure. The significance of library computerization and smart collaboration was recognized, and the notion of individuals situated was fully explored. According to the findings, the smart library framework, which is based on wireless sensor organization and radio frequency identification, was able to fundamentally understand the smart library executives. To summarize, the framework creates an unpredictable library administration and board framework at any time and in any location.

The objective of this paper is to clarify the complex notion of flexibility and to explore the impact of inter-organisational information systems (IOS) on the flexibility of the interaction between organisations. Based on previous research and on Vickers's appreciative systems thinking, the paper examines flexibility as a multidimensional concept, influenced by the inter-organisational context. Following an interpretive approach and a multiple case design, it analyses the flexibility of the interaction of two retailers and two suppliers. Based on the empirical findings, it shows that the use of IOS can constrain even competent organisations. It also shows how different organisational contexts affect the flexibility of inter-organisational collaboration. It finally discusses the socio-technical and dynamic nature of flexibility, as well as examining the relationships between its different dimensions.

Wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) has been widely used as the core technology of the Internet of Things, but it also brings many potential security risks. In this paper, two typical RFID security authentication protocols are analyzed in depth. The results show that the two protocols have security risks, and two targeted attack methods are proposed. Next, two RFID security authentication protocols which can resist the DoS, replay, and tracing attacks are designed. The first protocol uses index grouping and dynamic renewal mechanism. Since the Rabin public key encryption algorithm verification only requires square and modulo operations, the second protocol introduces the public key encryption algorithm into the cost-sensitive RFID tag, and formally verifies the functionality of the proposed scheme by SPIN. Furthermore, the security of the protocol is proven by the BAN logic. The grouping index method can effectively improve the ability to locate tags in a large database and enhance the practicability of the protocol. The introduction of the Rabin public key algorithm improves the security of the protocol under the condition of cost control.
