The Virtual Library and Its Implications

Abstract. A digital library is a library that already has a collection in digital form, and can serve its users boldly without having to come directly to the library building. The digital library is a technological innovation to make it easier for users to meet their needs. This study aims to determine the trend of scientific publications about digital libraries in Indonesia based on keywords that often appear, the authors who discuss this topic, and how many scientific publications have been published with the keywords digital library in the 2011-2021 timeframe. The method used is a quantitative descriptive method with a bibliometric approach. Scientific publication data is taken from the Google Scholar database using the Harzing's Publish or Perish application by entering the keyword “digital library” then the data is processed in the VOSviewer application. The results of this study found that the co-occurrence that appears is more words related to technology. In addition, the results are also divided into 7 clusters of keywords that appear most often in each cluster. For the most prolific authors, there are 18 top authors with at least 4 scientific publications and the most prolific writer is Rodin, R. with 11 scientific publications. The conclusion of this study is that the trend of scientific publications regarding digital libraries has experienced positive growth along with the development of technology with the appearance of the VOSviewer visualization.Keyword: knowledge mapping, bibliometrics, VOSviewer, digital library.

The proliferation of digital information resources in recent years challenges consumers with the need to employ critical thinking skills in reading news. This paper suggests an updated perspective to the expression that “the medium is the message” by comparing the ability of high-school and college students to exercise critical thinking skills in reading news in print and digital formats. The most important finding is the better performance of the younger participants (high school students) in reading digital news formats, and the better performance of the college students when reading news in a print format. The findings of this exploratory study are discussed through the lenses of three perspectives: a usability perspective, a cognitive perspective and an information economics perspective in order to stimulate further research that may provide designers, researchers and educators with useful guidelines for designing effective messages in the information age.

The objectives of this user study of Toronto's University Health Network (UHN) Virtual Library were to gather a profile of users by occupation; to determine which of the Virtual Library's resources they use, and how often; to measure the degree of user satisfaction; and to determine the impact of the Virtual Library on clinical decision making, research, and teaching. An online survey of UHN Virtual Library users was conducted from mid-June to mid-July 2001, using a combination of multiple-choice, Likert scale and open-ended questions. A frequency analysis was performed using SPSS. The Virtual Library was used at least once a week by 42.5% of respondents. Biomedical databases and electronic journals were the most often used resources. Users rated the usability of the Virtual Library highly; 81.9% felt that the resource had an impact on their clinical decision making, research or teaching. The UHN Virtual Library has been a frequently-used resource with substantial impact on the institution's core functions. More extensive, ongoing evaluation and promotion is recommended with a view to increasing its use among physicians and residents, as is increased training to help users obtain greater benefit from its resources.

Reading interest is an important aspect of middle school students' intellectual and academic development. However, in some schools, including SMPN 2 Babelan, students’ reading interests tend to decline. In addition, the development of information and communication technology (ICT) in the current era is accelerating significantly, with the use of IT as a solution to enhance students' interest in reading, especially Deploy digital library. This service activity aims to establish a digital library at SMPN 2 Babelan to enhance students' interest in reading. Digital library is an information technology-based platform that provides easy and quick access to various learning resources in digital form. The data collection methods used were through interviews, observations, and diaries. Research results show that the digital library has begun to increase students' interest in reading at SMP Negeri 2 Babelan, because it cannot be denied that students now use mobile phones more than books. Thanks to the digital library it will be easier for students to read it whenever and wherever they want. Therefore, it is hoped that using digital libraries to increase students' interest in reading will be more effective and efficient.

Reading interest is an important aspect for students' intellectual and academic development at the primary school level. However, in some elementary schools, including SDN 3 Cikoneng, students' interest in reading tends to be lacking or declining. Especially in the era of rapid development of information and communication technology, utilizing information and communication technology is one of the solutions to increase students' reading interest by implementing a digital library. The purpose of this research is to design and implement a digital library at SDN 3 Cikoneng as a means to increase student interest in reading. This digital library can be accessed easily and quickly to various learning resources in digital form. The system is designed and developed with the Waterfall model with stages including Requirements Analysis, System Design, Implementation, Testing, and Maintenance. The results of this study indicate that the digital library has begun to increase student interest in reading at SD Negeri 3 Cikoneng, because it is undeniable that now students use cellphones more than their books. Through the digital library, it will be easier for students to read material books anytime and anywhere. So it is hoped that the use of digital libraries can increase student interest in reading more effectively and efficiently.

Globally digital libraries are being set up. The Austrian academic libraries are also continuously developing modules for the digital library (catalogues, databases, electronic full-text journals) and present them on their websites. The structure and integration of the individual modules as essential criteria for digital libraries until now have been neglected. Moreover, a concept for a common “Digital Library of Austria” is still missing. Following a description of the current websites of the Austrian academic libraries, the article presents the available modules for an attainable “Digital Library of Austria” and describes the modules still to be developed. Finally, additional perspectives for an Austrian digital library ar delineated. The author describes the necessary organizational measures and presents deliberations with regard to funding and potential partners needed for the “Digital Library of Austria”.

The Digital Library – used here to connote a general category – aims to innovate the range of services offered to the public by ‘analogue libraries’ to a varied group of users. These services cross the multifaceted cases of public reading libraries (and a large and generalist pool of users), of university libraries (and an equally large pool of users made up of students, undergraduates, faculty, and researchers), and also extend to the world of conservation libraries, which attract a specialized niche audience, very often of international origin. The digitization of precious, ancient, books – both manuscript and printed – represents a great and complex challenge from many points of view (conceptual, design, implementation, logistics, economic, personnel management, etc.), but also the most intuitive way we have now to expand the services offered to users in digital form. In the (recent) past, many digital library initiatives have been carried out in this sense by individual library institutions, as well as by individual private programs or government projects, with variable results in terms of objectives actually achieved, sustainable permanence online, and their ability to effectively counteract the so-called ‘digital obsolescence’ by updating the entire technological infrastructure of the project itself, as well as the individual digital contents, to guarantee their survival. Nowadays, web- based technologies have evolved, increased, and standardized to such an extent that a new approach is possible for digital libraries in terms of usability, visualization, and multi-platform replication of digital content.

Metadata has been proven to play a key role in managing bibliographic data in digital form. The use of metadata contributes to the efficiency of organization of access, search and management of bibliographic data. Through a systematic analysis of the use of metadata in the formation of digital collections, in particular on the example of the description of digital copies of archival documents from the Library's collection of the Manuscripts Department of the NTSh in Lviv, it was established that metadata significantly facilitates access, search, integration and management of digital resources. The analysis of the specifics of the use of metadata in the formation of the Library's digital collections confirms their significance. The scientific novelty of the work consists in the systematic study of the specifics of the application of metadata in this context. The proposed research methodology, which includes the analysis of standards, the development of a metadata scheme, annotation, testing and implementation of metadata, contributes to the improvement of accessibility, organization and structuring of digital collections in the library electronic infrastructure. The article analyzes the role of metadata in solving the problems of digital bibliographic data, such as access, search, integration and data management. A research methodology is proposed, which includes studying existing metadata standards and recommendations, developing a metadata schema, creating annotations for archival documents, performance testing, selecting metadata types, and implementation. This approach made it possible to systematize the process of forming digital collections and improve the accessibility, organization and finding of digital resources in the library's electronic infrastructure.

Digital resources are becoming increasingly complex and are being used in diverse ways. For example, educational resources may be cataloged in digital libraries, used offline by educators and students, or used in a learning management system. In this paper we present the notion of “checking out” complex resources from a digital library for offline download or exchange with another digital library or learning management system. We present a mechanism that enables the customization, download and exchange of complex resources. We show how the mechanism also supports digital library and learning management system exchange formats in a generic fashion with minimal overhead. We also show how checkouts grow linearly with respect to the complexity of the resources.KeywordsDigital LibraryComplex ObjectLearn Management SystemDirectory StructureCanonical StructureThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. Digital libraries (DL) can be characterized as the “high end” of the Internet, digital systems which offer significant quantities of organized, selected materials of the type traditionally found in libraries, such as books, journal articles, photographs and similar documents (Schwartz, 2000). They normally offer quality resources based on the collections of well-known institutions, such as major libraries, archives, historical and cultural associations (Love & Feather, 1998). The field of digital libraries is now firmly established as an area of study, with textbooks (Arms, 2000; Chowdhury & Chowdhury, 2003; Lesk, 1997); electronic journals from the US (D-Lib Magazine: http://www.dlib.org/) and the UK (Ariadne: http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/); even encyclopedia articles (McCarthy, 2004).

In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards digitization within libraries worldwide, driven by advancements in technology and the increasing demand for online access to information. This transition has led to the proliferation of digital resources, including ebooks, databases, and multimedia materials, which offer numerous benefits such as enhanced accessibility, scalability, and preservation of cultural heritage (Bawden & Robinson, 2012; Maness, 2006).However, alongside these advancements, there arises a critical challenge: ensuring equal access to digital content for all individuals, including those with disabilities. The concept of digital accessibility has gained prominence as societies strive for inclusivity and diversity in the digital age.Divyangjan, or persons with disabilities, represent a significant portion of the population who may face barriers in accessing digital information due to various impairments such as visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive disabilities (United Nations, 2006).As libraries increasingly embrace digital platforms to disseminate knowledge and facilitate learning, it becomes imperative to address the accessibility needs of diverse user groups, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of information access and literacy (Jaeger & Bowman, 2005; UK Parliament, 2018).In response to these challenges, there have been notable developments and initiatives aimed at promoting accessibility in the digital realm. For instance, international organizations like the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) have developed guidelines such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which provide standards and best practices for creating accessible web content (World Wide Web Consortium, 2018).Additionally, governments and regulatory bodies around the world have enacted laws and policies to promote digital accessibility and protect the rights of persons with disabilities, including provisions for accessible ICT procurement and the provision of reasonable accommodations (European Commission, 2016; United States Access Board, n.d.).These efforts underscore the growing recognition of digital accessibility as a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for full participation in society. Background and Context:In recent years, there has been a significant transformation in the landscape of libraries worldwide, characterized by a rapid shift towards digital resources and online platforms. This transition has been driven by various factors, including advancements in technology, changing user preferences, and the increasing availability of digital content.Libraries are increasingly digitizing their collections, offering e-books, electronic journals, databases, and multimedia resources to meet the evolving needs of their patrons (Bawden & Robinson, 2012).As libraries embrace the digital era, it becomes crucial to ensure that these resources are accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities.Accessibility refers to the design of products, services, and environments that can be used by people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities, without discrimination. In the context of digital libraries, accessibility encompasses various aspects such as web design, content presentation, navigation, and interact ion.The goal is to remove barriers and provide equal access to information and resources for everyone, regardless of their abilities (Jaeger & Bowman, 2005).Divyangjan, or persons with disabilities, represent a significant portion of the population whose access to information may be hindered by various barriers in digital environments. These barriers could include inaccessible website designs, lack of alternative formats for content, or incompatible assistive technologies.Ensuring equal access to digital library resources for Divyangjan is not only a matter of social justice but also a legal and ethical imperative.Access to information is essential for education, employment, social inclusion,

In this article recent developments in the management of electronic journals at the Technical Knowledge Center & Library of Denmark (DTV) are outlined. Special emphasis is put on the reengineering of library services to take advantage of changes in electronic publishing, and on the development in house of a common user interface to electronic journals and databases. The human resource development activities including a domestic PC programme and distance learning as a primary means of educating staff are highlighted.

Digital may be libraries within which collections area unit keep in digital formats as a hostile print, alternative media and accessible by the computers the digital content is also kept domestically, or accessed remotely via laptop networks. A digital library sort of data retrieval system. A Digital library is an integrated approach to distinctive, managing, and sharing all of an organization?s information assets.

Digital libraries play an important and indispensable role in educational and research development of higher educational institutions such as colleges, universities, and institutes of an academic and research nature. The aim of the digital library is to provide instant access to digitized information and consists of a variety of information sources, paper to paperless including multimedia. Digitization implies conversion of documents in text, sound, graphical, or pictorial form into the language of digits (zero and one). Once the information sources are available in digital form, they can then be accessed, distributed, and transmitted easily in almost no time with no cost to the end-users over the global information network. It not only facilitates the library functions but also saves the time, strength, and energy of the users. A databank of digital cultural heritage from libraries, archives, and museums has been established with online service for national and worldwide users. The chapter highlights some features of digital libraries and the Indian Scenario of Digital Libraries.
