STABILITY OF THE TOP QUARK MASS IN SUPERSYMMETRIC TOP CONDENSATE MODELS
The top quark mass prediction in supersymmetric top condensate models is found to be insensitive to the inclusion of the effects of higher dimensional operators. For associated coefficients of characteristically moderate strength, the supersymmetric renormalization group trajectories are strongly focused to the infrared quasi-fixed point of the top Yukawa coupling constant.

Testing the heterotic string with the axion-photon coupling
A bstract The discovery of an axion-like particle above the QCD line would rule out Grand Unified Theories, including the perturbative heterotic string with the Standard Model embedded in a single E 8 factor or SO(32). In this work we study a possible loophole to this observation, given by compactifications of the E 8 × E 8 heterotic string with a non-standard embedding of the Standard Model into the 10-dimensional gauge group. If electromagnetism is embedded into both E 8 factors, axions can couple to photons via the anomaly without coupling to QCD. We obtain upper bounds to the coupling-to-mass ratio g aγ / m a for these axion-like particles as a function of the supersymmetry breaking scale and the unified gauge coupling. To be compatible with the measured gauge couplings and the weak mixing angle sin 2 θ w at low-energies, phenomenologically viable models with non-standard U(1) Y embedding require sizeable one-loop threshold corrections from string states and/or charged matter at intermediate energy scales. We study how these effects modify the tree-level upper bounds to g aγ / m a and show that, in the perturbative regime, they reduce the leading order estimates. Axion-like particles far above the QCD line are only possible in certain models where perturbation theory is lost. The main conclusion is that the discovery of an axion violating the bounds found in this work would be incompatible with large classes of otherwise phenomenologically viable string models, including the perturbative heterotic SO(32) and E 8 × E 8 string, the type-I string, and certain heterotic M-theories. The role of small gauge instantons and worldsheet instantons in making some of the axion-like particles heavy and cosmologically relevant is briefly discussed.
Read moreExceptional supersymmetric standard models with non-abelian discrete family symmetry
We introduce a non-Abelian discrete $\Delta_{27}$ family symmetry into the recently proposed classes of Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model ($E_6$SSM) based on a broken $E_6$ Grand Unified Theory (GUT) in order to solve the flavour problem in these models and in particular to account for tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing. We consider both the minimal version of the model (the ME$_6$SSM) with gauge coupling unification at the string scale and the E$_6$SSM broken via the Pati-Salam chain with gauge coupling unification at the conventional GUT scale. In both models there are low energy exotic colour triplets with couplings suppressed by the symmetries of the model, including the family symmetry. This leads to suppressed proton decay and long lived TeV mass colour triplet states with striking signatures at the LHC. We also present a dynamical solution to the $\mu'$ problem (where $\mu'$ is the mass of the additional pair of electroweak doublets in the E$_6$SSM).
Read moreMinimal model for dark matter and unification
Gauge coupling unification and the success of TeV-scale weakly interacting dark matter are usually taken as evidence of low energy supersymmetry (SUSY). However, if we assume that the tuning of the higgs can be explained in some unnatural way, from environmental considerations for example, SUSY is no longer a necessary component of any Beyond the Standard Model theory. In this paper we study the minimal model with a dark matter candidate and gauge coupling unification. This consists of the SM plus fermions with the quantum numbers of SUSY higgsinos, and a singlet. It predicts thermal dark matter with a mass that can range from 100 GeV to around 2 TeV and generically gives rise to an electric dipole moment that is just beyond current experimental limits, with a large portion of its allowed parameter space accessible to next generation EDM and direct detection experiments. We study precision unification in this model by embedding it in a 5-D orbifold GUT where certain large threshold corrections are calculable, achieving gauge coupling and b-tau unification, and predicting a rate of proton decay just beyond current limits.

We investigate the construction of four-family =1 supersymmetric Pati–Salam models from Type IIA T6/Z2×Z2 orientifold with intersecting D6-branes. Utilizing the deterministic algorithm introduced in He W, Li T and Sun R (2021 arXiv: hep-th/2112.09632), we obtain 274 types of models with three rectangular tori and distinct gauge coupling relations at string scale, while 6 types of models with two rectangular tori and one tilted torus. In both cases, there exists a class of models with gauge coupling unification at string scale. In particular, for the models with two rectangular tori, one tilted torus and gauge coupling unification, the gaugino condensations are allowed, and thus supersymmetry breaking and moduli stabilization are possible for further phenomenological study.

Predicting the flavour and SUSY flavour structure from grand unified theories
Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) offer an attractive framework for flavour models, since they feature relations between quarks and leptons. Combining them with Supersymmetry (SUSY) and flavour symmetries, we derive predictions for the flavour and SUSY flavour structure from various GUT models and discuss how the double missing partner mechanism (DMPM) solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem can be combined with predictions for GUT scale quark-lepton Yukawa coupling relations. We construct two predictive SUSY SU(5) GUT models with an A4 flavour symmetry, that feature realistic quark-lepton Yukawa coupling ratios and mixing angle relations. These GUT scale predictions arise after GUT symmetry breaking from a novel combination of group theoretical Clebsch-Gordan factors, and we carefully construct additional shaping symmetries and renormalisable messenger sectors to protect the models' predictions from dangerous corrections. The major difference between both models are their respective predictions of a normal and inverse neutrino mass ordering. We perform Markov Chain Monte Carlo analyses, fit to experimental data, and discuss how the models can be tested by present and future experiments. To combine predictive GUT scale quark-lepton Yukawa coupling ratios with the DMPM in SUSY SU(5), we introduce a second GUT breaking Higgs field in the adjoint representation. Two explicit flavour models with different predictions for the GUT scale Yukawa sector are presented, including shaping symmetries and renormalisable messenger sectors, and combined with the DMPM. We calculate the effective masses of the colour triplets mediating proton decay and find that they can be made sufficiently heavy. In SUSY theories, the one-loop SUSY threshold corrections are of particular importance in investigating GUT scale quark-lepton mass relations and thus link a given GUT flavour model to the sparticle spectrum. We calculate the one-loop SUSY threshold corrections of the full MSSM Yukawa coupling matrices in the electroweak-unbroken phase and introduce a new software tool SusyTC as a major extension to the Mathematica package REAP. Finally we find predictions for the CMSSM parameters and sparticle masses from the GUT scale Yukawa coupling ratios used in the flavour models of this thesis.

We present a class of nonsupersymmetric models in which the so-called critical Higgs inflation [Formula: see text] can be naturally realized without using specific values for Higgs and top quark masses. In these scenarios, the Standard Model (SM) vacuum stability problem, gauge coupling unification, neutrino mass generation and Higgs inflation mechanism are linked to each other. We adopt in our models Type I seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses. An appropriate choice of the Type I seesaw scale allows us to have an arbitrarily small but positive value of SM Higgs quartic coupling around the inflation scale. We present a few benchmark points where we show that the scalar spectral indices are around 0.9626 and 0.9685 for the number of [Formula: see text]-folding [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively. The tensor-to-scalar ratios are of the order of [Formula: see text]. The running of the scalar spectral index is negative and is of the order of [Formula: see text].

Measurements of top quark properties using data collected by the CMS experiment are presented. Among them, the latest results on the $t\bar{t}$ spin correlations, the W boson polarization, the top quark Yukawa coupling, the top quark mass and its running, the top sector of the CKM matrix, and the $t\bar{t}$ forward backward asymmetry will be discussed.
Read moreGolden probe of the top Yukuwa coupling
We perform a preliminary study of the ability of the Higgs decay to four leptons to shed light on the top quark Yukawa couplings. In particular we examine whether the $h\to 4\ell$ `golden channel' is sensitive to the $CP$ properties of the top quark couplings to the Higgs boson. We show that kinematic distributions are sensitive to interference of the next-to-leading order electroweak corrections with the tree level $ZZ$ contribution. This translates into a sensitivity to the top quark Yukawa couplings such that meaningful constraints on their $CP$ properties can begin to be obtained once $\sim 300$ fb$^{-1}$ of data has been collected at $\sim 14$ TeV, with significant improvements at higher luminosity or with a higher energy hadron collider. This makes the $h\to4\ell$ channel a useful probe of the top quark Yukawa couplings that is qualitatively different from already established searches in $h\to V\gamma$ two body decays, $tth$, and $gg\to h$. We also briefly discuss other potential possibilities for probing the top Yukawa $CP$ properties in $h\to2\ell\gamma$ and $\ell^+\ell^-\to h Z, h\gamma$.
Read moreMinimal string-scale unification of gauge couplings
We look for the minimal particle content which is necessary to add to the standard model in order to have a complete unification of gauge couplings and gravity at the weakly coupled heterotic string scale. Using the current precision electroweak data, we find that the presence of a vector-like fermion at an intermediate scale and a non-standard hypercharge normalization are in general sufficient to achieve this goal at two-loop level. If one requires the extra matter scale to be below the TeV scale, then it is found that the addition of three vector-like fermion doublets with a mass around 700 GeV yields a perfect string-scale unification, provided that the affine levels are kY=13/3, k2=1 and k3=2, as in the SU(5)⊗SU(5) string-GUT. Furthermore, if supersymmetry is broken at the unification scale, the Higgs mass is predicted in the range 125–170 GeV, depending on the precise values of the top quark mass and tanβ parameter.
Read moreA D-brane alternative to the MSSM
The success of SU(5)-like gauge coupling unification boundary conditions $g_3^2=g_2^2=5/3 g_1^2$ has biased most attempts to embed the SM interactions into a unified structure. After discussing the limitations of the orthodox approach, we propose an alternative that appears to be quite naturally implied by recent developments based on D-brane physics. In this new alternative: 1) The gauge group, above a scale of order 1 TeV, is the minimal left-right symmetric extension $SU(3)\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$ of the SM; 2) Quarks, leptons and Higgs fields come in three generations; 3) Couplings unify at an intermediate string scale $M_s= 9\times 10^{11}$ GeV with boundary conditions $g_3^2=g_L^2=g_R^2=32/3 g_{B-L}^2$. This corresponds to the natural embedding of gauge interactions into D-branes and is different from the standard SO(10) embedding which corresponds to $k_{B-L}=8/3$. Unification only works in the case of three generations; 4) Proton stability is automatic due to the presence of $Z_2$ discrete R-parity and lepton parities. A specific Type IIB string orientifold model with the above characteristics is constructed. The existence of three generations is directly related to the existence of three complex extra dimensions. In this model the string scale can be identified with the intermediate scale and SUSY is broken also at that scale due to the presence of anti-branes in the vacuum. We discuss a number of phenomenological issues in this model including Yukawa couplings and a built-in axion solution to the strong-CP problem. The present framework could be tested by future accelerators by finding the left-right symmetric extension of the SM at a scale of order 1 TeV.
