Towards ethnicity detection using learning based classifiers

Biometrics is the study of unique characteristics present in the human body such as fingerprint, palm-print, retina, iris, footprint, etc. While other traits have been explored widely, only a few people have been considered the foot-palm region, despite having unique properties. Prior work has explored the foot shape features using length, width, major axis, minor axis, centroid, etc. but they are not reliable for personal verification due to similarity in the physical composition of two persons. It increases the demand for more unique features based on the footprint. Footprint texture features coming from creases of foot palm are unique and permanent like palmprint texture features. Hence the main objective of the paper is to investigate various kinds of texture feature techniques. These techniques will be further used in correct extraction of footprint features. After extraction of footprint features a detailed experimental analysis is performed to discover the uniqueness in foot texture. It is further utilized to test its viability as a human recognition trait. We describe a detailed feature extraction and classification technique applied to a collected footprint data-set. For feature extraction, we use three techniques: Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Histogram Oriented Gradient (HOG), and Local Binary Patterns (LBP). Feature classification is performed using four techniques: Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Ensemble Subspace Discriminant (ESD). GLCM provides less accuracy, while HOG generates a big feature vector which takes more execution time. LBP provides a trade-off between the accuracy and the execution time. Detailed quantitative experiments show: GLCM with LDA provides an accuracy of $$88.5\%$$ , HOG with Fine-KNN achieves $$86.5\%$$ accuracy and LBP with LDA achieves the accuracy of $$97.9\%$$ .

Facial expression which carries rich information of body behavior is the leading carrier of human affective and the symbol of intelligence. The main purpose of this paper is to recognize 3D human facial expression. The research in this paper includes the expression feature extraction algorithm and fusion with different kinds of feature. To contain more local texture feature information, we proposed a new feature of 3D facial expression named Local Threshold Binary Pattern (LTBP) which based on Local Binary Pattern (LBP). We calculate the difference of gray value standard between neighboring pixels and the center pixel as a threshold to binary instead of the traditional LBP operation which only comparison of size between neighboring pixels and the center pixel. After we get the LTBP feature, we fuse the LTBP and HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradient) features to get multi-feature fusion for 3D facial expression recognition. Our algorithm of 3D facial expression recognition comprises three steps: (1) extracting two sets of feature vectors and establishing the correlation criterion function between the two sets of feature vectors; (2) solving the two sets canonical projective vectors and extracting their canonical correlation features by the framework of canonical correlation analysis algorithm; (3) doing feature fusion for classification by using proposed strategy. We have performed comprehensive experiments on the BU-3DFE database which is presently the largest available 3D face database. We have achieved verification rates of more than 90% for the 3D facial expression recognition.

To develop a machine learning (ML) model that predicts disease groups or autoantibodies in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) using muscle MRI radiomics features. Twenty-two patients with dermatomyositis (DM), 14 with amyopathic dermatomyositis (ADM), 19 with polymyositis (PM) and 19 with non-IIM were enrolled. Using 2D manual segmentation, 93 original features as well as 93 local binary pattern (LBP) features were extracted from MRI (short-tau inversion recovery [STIR] imaging) of proximal limb muscles. To construct and compare ML models that predict disease groups using each set of features, dimensional reductions were performed using a reproducibility analysis by inter-reader and intra-reader correlation coefficients, collinearity analysis, and the sequential feature selection (SFS) algorithm. Models were created using the linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), random forest (RF) and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) classifiers, and validated using tenfold cross-validation repeated 100 times. We also investigated whether it was possible to construct models predicting autoantibody status. Our ML-based MRI radiomics models showed the potential to distinguish between PM, DM, and ADM. Models using LBP features provided better results, with macro-average AUC values of 0.767 and 0.714, accuracy of 61.2 and 61.4%, and macro-average recall of 61.9 and 59.8%, in the LDA and k-NN classifiers, respectively. In contrast, the accuracies of radiomics models distinguishing between non-IIM and IIM disease groups were low. A subgroup analysis showed that classification models for anti-Jo-1 and anti-ARS antibodies provided AUC values of 0.646–0.853 and 0.692–0.792, with accuracy of 71.5–81.0 and 65.8–78.3%, respectively. ML-based TA of muscle MRI may be used to predict disease groups or the autoantibody status in patients with IIM and is useful in non-invasive assessments of disease mechanisms.

Communication is the ultimate of man’s search for conveying his ideas, emotions, and concepts. Dance is one of the media of communication through which dancers share notion of feelings, with the spectators through gestures, i.e., mudra. Gesture recognition propagates a concept without verbal speech or listening, and in dance recognition, the notion is transferred through various dance poses and actions. This activity in a way really paves way to enhance Indian Sign Language. This study focuses to solve the mudra resemblance in Bharatanatyam through a new system developed with image processing and classification technique using histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) feature extraction techniques and support vector machine (SVM) classifier. SVM classifies the features of HOG into mudras as text labels. Popular feature vectors such as scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), speed up robust feature (SURF), and local binary pattern (LBP) are hardened against HOG for accuracy and speediness, and this innovative proposed concept is useful for online dance learners.

BackgroundPredictive models for delayed graft function (DGF) after kidney transplantation are usually developed using logistic regression. We want to evaluate the value of machine learning methods in the prediction of DGF.Methods497 kidney transplantations from deceased donors at the Ghent University Hospital between 2005 and 2011 are included. A feature elimination procedure is applied to determine the optimal number of features, resulting in 20 selected parameters (24 parameters after conversion to indicator parameters) out of 55 retrospectively collected parameters. Subsequently, 9 distinct types of predictive models are fitted using the reduced data set: logistic regression (LR), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), support vector machines (SVMs; using linear, radial basis function and polynomial kernels), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and stochastic gradient boosting (SGB). Performance of the models is assessed by computing sensitivity, positive predictive values and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) after 10-fold stratified cross-validation. AUROCs of the models are pairwise compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank test.ResultsThe observed incidence of DGF is 12.5 %. DT is not able to discriminate between recipients with and without DGF (AUROC of 52.5 %) and is inferior to the other methods. SGB, RF and polynomial SVM are mainly able to identify recipients without DGF (AUROC of 77.2, 73.9 and 79.8 %, respectively) and only outperform DT. LDA, QDA, radial SVM and LR also have the ability to identify recipients with DGF, resulting in higher discriminative capacity (AUROC of 82.2, 79.6, 83.3 and 81.7 %, respectively), which outperforms DT and RF. Linear SVM has the highest discriminative capacity (AUROC of 84.3 %), outperforming each method, except for radial SVM, polynomial SVM and LDA. However, it is the only method superior to LR.ConclusionsThe discriminative capacities of LDA, linear SVM, radial SVM and LR are the only ones above 80 %. None of the pairwise AUROC comparisons between these models is statistically significant, except linear SVM outperforming LR. Additionally, the sensitivity of linear SVM to identify recipients with DGF is amongst the three highest of all models. Due to both reasons, the authors believe that linear SVM is most appropriate to predict DGF.

Investigation of acoustic and visual features for pig cough classification

Recognition of emotions based on facial expressions has received increasing attention from the scientific community over the last years. Several fields of applications can benefit from facial emotion recognition, such as behavior prediction, interpersonal relations, human-computer interactions, recommendation systems. In this work, we develop and analyze an emotion recognition framework based on facial expressions robust to occlusions through the Weber Local Descriptor (WLD). Initially, the occluded facial expressions are reconstructed following an extension approach of Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA). Then, WLD features are extracted from the facial expression representation, as well as Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). The feature vector space is reduced using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Finally, K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers are used to recognize the expressions. Experimental results on three public datasets demonstrated that the WLD representation achieved competitive accuracy rates for occluded and non-occluded facial expressions compared to other approaches available in the literature.

Because of high dimensionality, correlation among covariates, and noise contained in data, dimension reduction (DR) techniques are often employed to the application of machine learning algorithms. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and their kernel variants (KPCA, KLDA) are among the most popular DR methods. Recently, Supervised Kernel Principal Component Analysis (SKPCA) has been shown as another successful alternative. In this paper, brief reviews of these popular techniques are presented first. We then conduct a comparative performance study based on three simulated datasets, after which the performance of the techniques are evaluated through application to a pattern recognition problem in face image analysis. The gender classification problem is considered on MORPH-II and FG-NET, two popular longitudinal face aging databases. Several feature extraction methods are used, including biologically-inspired features (BIF), local binary patterns (LBP), histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), and the Active Appearance Model (AAM). After applications of DR methods, a linear support vector machine (SVM) is deployed with gender classification accuracy rates exceeding 95% on MORPH-II, competitive with benchmark results. A parallel computational approach is also proposed, attaining faster processing speeds and similar recognition rates on MORPH-II. Our computational approach can be applied to practical gender classification systems and generalized to other face analysis tasks, such as race classification and age prediction.

Human action recognition from 2D videos is a demanding area due to its broad applications. Many methods have been proposed by the researchers for recognizing human actions. The improved accuracy in identifying human actions is desirable. This paper presents an improved method of human action recognition using support vector machine (SVM) classifier. This paper proposes a novel feature descriptor constructed by fusing the various investigated features. The handcrafted features such as scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) features, speed up robust features (SURF), histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) features and local binary pattern (LBP) features are obtained on online 2D action videos. The proposed method is tested on different action datasets having both static and dynamically varying backgrounds. The proposed method achieves shows best recognition rates on both static and dynamically varying backgrounds. The datasets considered for the experimentation are KTH, Weizmann, UCF101, UCF sports actions, MSR action and HMDB51.The performance of the proposed feature fusion model with SVM classifier is compared with the individual features with SVM. The fusion method showed best results. The efficiency of the classifier is also tested by comparing with the other state of the art classifiers such as k-nearest neighbors (KNN), artificial neural network (ANN) and Adaboost classifier. The method achieved an average of 94.41% recognition rate.

Multimodal biometrics-based systems aim to improve the recognition accuracy of human beings using more than one physical and/or behavioral characteristics of a person. In this paper, different fusion schemes at matching score level and feature level are employed to obtain a robust recognition system using several standard feature extractors. The proposed method involves the consideration of a face–iris multimodal biometric system using score level and feature level fusion. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), subspace Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), subpattern-based PCA, modular PCA and Local Binary Patterns (LBP) are global and local feature extraction methods applied on face and iris images. In fact, different feature sets obtained from five local and global feature extraction methods for unimodal iris biometric system are concatenated at feature level fusion called iris feature vector fusion (iris-FVF), while for unimodal face biometric system, LBP is used to achieve efficient texture descriptors. Feature selection is performed using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) at feature level fusion step to reduce the dimension of feature vectors for improving the recognition performance. Our proposed method is validated by forming three datasets using ORL, BANCA, FERET face databases and CASIA, UBIRIS iris databases. The results based on recognition performance and ROC analysis demonstrate that the proposed matching score level fusion scheme using Weighted Sum rule, tanh normalization, iris-FVF and facial features extracted by LBP achieves a significant improvement over unimodal and multimodal methods. Support Vector Machine (SVM) and t-norm normalization are also used to improve the recognition performance of the proposed method.

The field of machine learning is growing in modern times, computational models are able to go beyond the performance of previous forms of artificial intelligence. The use of evaluation model ,selection of model and algorithm selecting techniques play an major role in machine learning study and also in field of industries. In this work, we made evaluation of various supervised, unsupervised machine learning classifiers for flower datasets. We made use of local features such as Histogram of gradient , Kaze, Local binary pattern(LBP) ,Oriented Fast and Rotated Brief( ORB), global features like Color Histograms, Haralick Textures , Hu Moments , fusion of both and Bag of visual words(BOVW) using Vocabulary builder K-Means clustering which represents color ,texture, shape features of image. Experiment is carried out on 20 classes of flower datasets with 100 images each. .Flower datasets have many characteristic in common like sunflower will be similar to daffodil in terms of color and texture .Hence to quantify the image we need to combine different feature descriptors like color, texture and shape features. We develop a Content based classification system to find efficiency comparison of different machine learning algorithms for classification and retrieval problems. Eleven classifiers mainly Support Vector Machine, K Nearest Neighbor, Gaussian Naive Bayes , CART, Kmeans, Linear Discriminant Analysis, Adaboost ,Logistic Regression, MLP, Random Forest, CNN are analyzed on the shape, color ,texture features. Experimentation are carried out and results are recorded using CPU as well as GPU on google cobalatory platform.

This paper proposes a novel face representation approach, local Gabor binary mapping pattern (LGBMP), for multi-view gender classification. In this approach, a face image is first represented as a series of Gabor magnitude pictures (GMP) by applying multi-scale and multi-orientation Gabor filters. Each GMP is then encoded as a LGBP image where a uniform local binary pattern (LBP) operator is used. After that, each LGBP image is divided into non-overlapping rectangular regions, from which spatial histograms are extracted. Although an LGBP feature vector can be obtained by fitting together the regional histograms, it can not be employed in pattern classification due to its high dimension. We propose that each regional LGBP feature be mapped onto a one-dimensional subspace independently before they are concatenated as a whole feature vector. This is attractive since we reduce the feature dimension and also preserve the spatial information of LGBP image. Two ways have been proposed to map the regional LGBP feature in this paper. One is so-called LGBMP-LDA using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for dimensionality reduction while the other is to project the regional LGBP feature onto the class center connecting line, namely, LGBMP-CCL. As a result, despite several decades of Gabor filters, the final feature dimension is even less than that of the feature extracted by using LBP directly on gray-scale images. The classification tasks in our work are performed by support vector machines (SVM). The experimental results on the CAS-PEAL face database indicate that the proposed approach achieves higher accuracy than the others such as SVMs+Gray-scale pixel, SVMs+Gabor and SVMs+LBP approach, more particularly, it has the lowest dimension of feature vector.

One of the most common causes of death worldwide is skin cancer and its incidence is increasing. To achieve optimal treatment and improve clinical outcomes for patients, precision skin cancer detection and classification approaches are required, which can be achieved through the application of feature extraction and machine learning algorithms. The development of such algorithms to identify important patterns from skin cancer image datasets enables early detection and more accurate classification and more effective treatment. Although previous studies have tried to detect skin cancer using feature extraction techniques such as HFF, HOG, and GLCM, some weaknesses still need to be improved. This research aims to combine various feature extraction methods such as Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix, Histogram Oriented Gradients, and Local Binary Patterns and machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, and Gaussian Naïve Bayes in the classification process between Melanoma and Nevus skin cancers. In this research, the number of datasets used is 17,397 derived from the ISIC Dataset. The results showed that the Histogram Oriented Gradients method with Support Vector Machine algorithm achieved the highest accuracy of 92%. The combination of Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix and Local Binary Patterns with Random Forest algorithm also achieved an accuracy of 92%, the combination of Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix, Histogram Oriented Gradients, and Local Binary Patterns with Random Forest algorithm also resulted in an accuracy of 92%. These findings suggest that the combination of various feature extraction methods and machine learning algorithms can improve accuracy in skin cancer classification, which in turn can contribute to early detection and more effective treatment.

This paper describes different approaches for the face authentication from the features and classification abilities point of view. Authors compare two types of features - Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and Local Binary Patterns (LBP) including their combination. These parameters are classified using Multilayer Neural Network (MLNN) and Support Vector Machines (SVM). Face authentication consists of several steps. The first step contains Viola-Jones algorithm for face detection. Authors resize the detected face for a fixed vector and afterwards, it is converted into grayscale. Next, feature extraction with a simple Min-Max normalization is applied. Obtained parameters are evaluated by classifiers and for each detected face, authors get posterior probability as the output of the classifier. Different approaches for face authentication are compared with each other using False Acceptance Rate (FAR), False Rejection Rate (FRR), Equal Error Rate (EER), Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) and Detection Error Tradeoff (DET) curves. The results are verified with AR Face Database and elaborated in a feature extraction and classifier design point of view. Best results were achieved by HOG feature for SVM classifier. Detailed results are listed in the text below.

Face recognition is a process of verifying an individual using facial images and it is widely employed in identifying people on social media platforms, validating identity at ATMs, finding missing persons, controlling access to sensitive areas, finding lost pets, etc. Face recognition is still a trending research area because of various challenges like illumination variations, different poses, and expressions of the person. Here, a novel methodology is introduced for face recognition using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), histogram of Local Binary Patterns (LBP), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The features from HOG, histogram of LBP, and deep features from the proposed CNN are linearly concatenated to produce the feature space and then classified by Support Vector Machine. The face databases ORL, Extended Yale B, and CMUPIE are used for experimental work and attained a recognition rate of 98.48%, 97.33%, and 97.28% respectively.
