UML for software engineers

The emergence of Unified Modeling Language (UML) as a standard for modeling systems has encouraged the use of automated software tools that facilitate the development process from analysis through coding. The UML state machine diagram is used for modeling the dynamic aspects of systems and includes many concepts that are not present in most popular programming languages, like Java or C++. There exists a gap between high level modeling language and a programming language. This paper proposes an approach to narrow the gap between multiple UML models and an implemented system. The narrowing of gap is achieved by generating compact and efficient Java code directly from UML state machine having sequential and concurrent substates. The code generation is achieved by creating a mapping between UML behavior and the Java programming language. Our model can work as a basis for automatic code generation for object-oriented systems.

Nowadays, software effort estimation plays an important role in software project management due to its extensive use in industry to monitor progress, and performance, determine overall productivity and assist in project planning. After the success of methods such as IFPUG Function Point Analysis, MarkII Function Point Analysis, and COSMIC Full Function Points, several other extension methods have been introduced to be adopted in software projects. Despite the efficiency in measuring the software cost, software effort estimation, unfortunately, is facing several issues; it requires some knowledge, effort, and a significant amount of time to conduct the measurement, thus slightly ruining the advantages of this approach. This paper demonstrates a functional size measurement tool, named UML Point tool, that utilizes the concept of IFPUG Function Point Analysis directly to Unified Modeling Language (UML) model. The tool allows the UML eXchange Format (UXF) file to decode the UML model of mobile game requirement and extract the diagrams into component complexity, object interface complexity, and sequence diagram complexity, according to the defined measurement rules. UML Point tool then automatically compute the functional size, effort, time, human resources, and total development cost of mobile game. Besides, this paper also provides a simple case study to validate the tool. The initial results proved that the tool could be useful to improve estimation accuracy for mobile game application development and found to be reliable to be applied in the mobile game industry.

Some question the rationale of having nine diagramming techniques in UML and the raison d’être of those nine techniques in UML. Others point out that UML lacks a comprehensive methodology to guide its users, which makes the language even more convoluted. A few studies on UML can be found in the literature. However, no study exists to provide a quantitative measure of UML complexity or to compare UML with other object-oriented techniques. In this research, we evaluate the complexity of UML using complexity metrics. The objective is to provide a reliable and accurate quantitative measure of UML complexity. A comparison of the complexity metrical values of UML with other object-oriented techniques was also carried out. Our findings suggest that each diagram in UML is not distinctly more complex than techniques in other modeling methods. But as a whole, UML is very complex–2-11 times more complex than other modeling methods.

Since its adoption in 1997, the unified modeling language (UML) has proved very popular with software engineers and has become the de facto standard as a visual modeling language for software engineers. However, this software focus of UML has discouraged many systems engineers from adopting it in earnest. Those who did adopt UML developed strategies to cope with its shortcomings. A common approach was to model additional systems engineering concepts in other modeling tools. This made it difficult to integrate the different viewpoints and achieve traceability. Fortunately, with the release of UML 2.0 and the ensuing extensions to it in SysML - the soon-to-be adopted systems modeling language - the systems engineering community has a real alternative to systems modeling that provides a more integrated approach to systems and software engineering. Since its inception in 1997, ARTiSAN has endeavored to bridge the gap between systems and software engineering modeling by adding systems engineering extensions to the UML and, as a key member of the SysML initiative, is well poised to support these emerging standards for systems and software modeling. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the major extensions proposed by SysML, and will summarize how ARTiSAN's latest release of its flagship product Studio (version 6.0) takes the lead in supporting these concepts.

Software product line (SPL) is a software engineering paradigm for software development. A software product within a product line often has specific functionalities that are not common to all other products within the product line. Those specific functionalities are termed “variant features” in a product line. SPL paradigm involves the modeling of variant features. However, little work in SPL investigates and addresses the modeling of variant features specific to user interface (UI). Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the de facto modeling language for object-oriented software systems. It is known that UML needs better support in modeling UIs. Thus, much research developed UML extensions to improve UML support in modeling UIs. Yet little of this work is related to developing such extensions for modeling UIs for SPLs in which variant features specific to UI modeling must be addressed. This research develops a UML extension -Web User Interface Modeling Language (WUIML) to address these problems. WUIML defines elements for modeling variant features specific to user interfaces for Web-based SPLs. The model elements in WUIML extend from the metaclass and BasicActivity of the UML2.0 metamodel. WUIML integrates the modeling of variant features specific to user interfaces to UML. For example, in a Web-based patient registration software product line, member products targeting British users may use British date format in the user interface, while member products targeting United States users may use United States date format in the user interface. Thus, this is a variant feature for this product line. WUIML defines a model element, XOR, to represent such exclusive or conditions in a product line user interface model. WUIML would reduce SPL engineers’ efforts needed in UI development. To validate the WUIML research outcome, a case study was conducted. The results of this empirical study indicate that modeling UIs for Web-based SPLs using WUIML is more effective and efficient than using standard UML.

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) has been widely accepted as the standard object-oriented (OO) modeling language for modeling various aspects of software and information systems. The UML is an extensible language, in the sense that it provides mechanisms to introduce new elements for specific domains if necessary, such as web applications, database applications, business modeling, software development processes, data warehouses and so on. Furthermore, the latest work of the Object Management Group (OMG) on UML [1] resulted in a larger and more complicated specification, with even more diagrams for some good reasons. Although providing different diagrams for modeling specific parts of a software system, not all of them need to be applied in most cases. Therefore, heuristics, design guidelines, and lessons learned from experiences are extremely important for the effective use of UML and to avoid unnecessary complication.

To most in the software community, "modeling" is drawing pictures, something much different than "coding". While programming languages must be specified precisely enough to be executable, this has not necessarily been the case for modeling languages. Indeed, the well-known Unified Modeling Language (UML) has for years had a specification that is far from precise. However, precise models are quite common in other engineering disciplines, and there has been a minority even in software engineering that have created models that are precise enough to be, themselves, executable. Over the last decade, the UML community has more generally come to realize the benefits of having at least a subset of UML specified with precise execution semantics. While not all models need to be executable, executable models can support early testing and analysis of the design of critical software systems, as well as supporting simulation for communities using UML for modeling beyond just software (such as SysML for systems engineering). As a result, there has been a great deal of work in recent years toward the standardization of precise, executable semantics for UML models - the "meaning" behind the pictures: Foundational UML (fUML), the Action Language for fUML (Alf) and the recently completed Precise Semantics for UML Composite Structures. These new specifications provide the promise of widespread support for executable modeling across the many UML tools now on the market.

Computer-aided software engineering (CASE) Tools is a set of software that results in high-quality and maintainable software products. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is one of the most commonly used CASE tools for analyzing and expressing software requirements. Considerably, UML overcomes ambiguity limitation which results from infamous shortcoming of national language. However, how to express requirements of E-Commerce System is still a very challenging problem. In this paper, requirement analysis is highlighted by IBM Rational Rose and Microsoft Visio, and typical E-Commerce system by UML is investigated as well. At the end, a guideline generated for Jewellery E-Commerce (JEC) is presented by UML use cases, activity diagrams, and data flow diagrams in details.

The main purpose of this paper is to present knowledge-based Enterprise model (EM) sufficiency as data repository for Unified Modelling Language (UML) models generation. UML models are one of the most usable modelling languages in system lifecycle design stage, despite the problem domain of the system. UML models can be generated from Enterprise Model by using particular transformation algorithms presented in previous researches. Generation process from Enterprise model is represented by certain Hospital Information Management process example. Generated UML dynamic Use Case, Activity, Sequence and State models of different perspectives of Hospital Information Management process prove sufficiency of stored information in Enterprise model.

To solve the identification and comprehension problem of crosscutting concerns in existing legacy software system, a framework of aspects-oriented software reverse engineering was proposed. An approach on re-modularizing traversal features of legacy system was presented, which based on various Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams. While modeling crosscutting concerns in UML use case diagrams, the non-functional requirements that affect several use case modules can be enveloped into aspects modules with stereotype mechanism. The recurring message transmission patterns can be re-modularized as aspects in UML sequence diagrams with UML collaborations. Standard UML activity diagram notations were extended and modified by nodes fusion and addition, which support the graphical composition operation between crosscutting behaviors and primary business rules of concurrent system. The case study indicates traversal features of software system can be extracted and re-modularized from various perspectives in aspects-oriented reverse engineering, which improves the comprehensibility and maintainability of legacy system.

The unified modeling language (UML) is one of the most commonly used modeling languages in the software industry. It simplifies the complex process of design by providing a set of graphical notations, which helps express the objectoriented analysis and design of software projects. Although UML is applicable to different types of systems, domains, methods, and processes, it cannot express certain problem domain needs. Therefore, many extensions to UML have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a framework for integrating the UML extensions and then use the framework to propose an integrated unified modeling language-graphical (iUML-g) form. iUML-g integrates the existing UML extensions into one integrated form. This includes an integrated diagram for UML class, sequence, and use case diagrams. The proposed approach is evaluated using a case study. The proposed iUML-g is capable of modeling systems that use different domains.

The Unified Software Development Process (USDP) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) have been now generally accepted as the standard methodology and modeling language for developing object-oriented systems. Although agent-based systems introduce new issues, we consider that USDP and UML can be used in an extended manner for modeling agent-based systems. We present a methodology for designing agent-based systems and the specific models expressed in the UML-based notation corresponding to each phase of the software development process. UML was extended using the provided mechanism: stereotypes. Therefore, this approach can be managed with any CASE tool supporting UML. A case study, the development of a specific agent-based student assessment system (SAS), is presented.

Developing software systems that are complicated and critical gives challenges to software engineers and the software industry. Intelligent software agent design is one such application domain that imposes challenges. The application of formal methods in software engineering, specifically with executable software specification languages, can involve much learning among the users of the system. Although executable software specifications tend to be advantageous over the traditional software specification process, the passive growth inside industry remains open for research efforts to come up with the hidden myths. The application of formal methods during system development of intelligent software agents makes the design of the product reliable. This paper describes an approach that combines an extension to the widely used Unified Modeling Language (UML) for design with an executable specification language. Also, the paper describes an approach that transforms agent oriented specifications written using the extended Descartes specification language into a high level design representation using Agent UML (AUML).

Various methodologies exist to annotate software models with data related to performance, and to translate the annotated models into performance models. A relevant objective is now at hand in this direction, that is to make these methodologies acceptable from the software engineering community. We present here the XPRIT tool that allows to annotate UML diagrams and translate them into models ready to performance validation, that are execution graphs and queueing networks. The translation is based on an existing methodology (PRIMA-UML), and the output models represent the inputs to a software performance engineering approach.
