Understanding Ultimate Use Data and Its Implication for Digital Library Management: A Case Study

Background and purpose: With the advancement of science and the increase of electronic resources, the need to create libraries to collect, organize and disseminate these types of resources is felt. With the growth of electronic resources, resource management has gained special importance and is one of the important areas and issues in the discussion of digital libraries. In this study, the aim is to examine the issues and challenges facing the management of digital libraries and provide solutions to solve the challenges and issues facing digital libraries and digital library management. Research method: The current research is applied in terms of purpose and survey research in terms of method. The current research has been conducted by field method and using library techniques, and the researchers have presented digital library management approaches by reviewing the published texts on digital libraries and digital library management issues. Findings: The results of the research showed that the most important components of digital library management include human resources, management of shared resources, author's right to update resources, cataloging and maintaining the technical structure. Also, the surveys showed that the most important challenge facing digital libraries is the issue of intellectual property and compliance with copyright laws. Conclusion: The results of the research showed that in digital libraries, as in traditional libraries, measures must be taken in the field of collecting, organizing, storing and disseminating information, and it is not possible to carry out the above-mentioned activities without a competent manager. Digital library management leads to the creation of coordination between different parts of the digital library and helps the library to achieve the desired goals. The digital library is facing many issues and challenges, including financial and budget issues, issues related to expert human resources, issues related to digital equipment and internet infrastructure, issues related to author's right and copyright, issues related to the lack of devices. Digitization and security of important information resources and documents and finally issues related to the protection and maintenance of digital resources are faced, which cannot be solved except with the presence of a capable manager and strong human resources of the library.

This community service activity under the scheme of applying science and technology for the community is in partnership with the village of Tegal Harum, Denpasar Bali, in the field of digital library management. The Sastra Mahottama Library in Tegal Harum Village, apart from providing conventional services, also provides digital library services through the SIPESAT application (Digital Library Application) in Tegal Harum Village, which makes it easier for people to borrow various types of e-books according to their needs. Problems faced by the library managers are related to the classification and cataloguing of library materials, as well as increasing the capacity of human resources for digital library managers. The implementation using the classical and individual methods lasts for one month at the Tegal Harum village office. Activities consist of situation analysis, training, and evaluation stages. The implications of service activities are the results of the classification and cataloguing of 30% of reading collections as well as increasing knowledge and skills in using digital library applications.

The development of the times is getting faster with technology. Digital madrasas also need other supporters for better educational sustainability. In the era of digitalization, the Madrasah as an educational institution also has a role in keeping up with the times. This study aims to describe efforts to optimize digital libraries and analyze the strategy for developing digital collections in madrasah libraries. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques including observation of the condition and state of the digital library in the Madrasah, interviews with resource persons as digital library managers, and documentation of activities in the digital library. The study results show that digital libraries in madrasas are optimized for digital use, especially in education. In addition, the optimization strategy carried out is that the digital library has collections that are digitally recorded where the development of digital collections in the Madrasah includes analyzing user needs, mapping digital collection sources, and evaluating the use and IDs distributed to each library member including all students, teachers and education staff in the Madrasah. As well as optimizing the digital library in collaboration with the central library in Lamongan. The optimization of digital libraries can increase the popularity of digital libraries in madrasas and can expand library digital services.

Digital resources are becoming increasingly complex and are being used in diverse ways. For example, educational resources may be cataloged in digital libraries, used offline by educators and students, or used in a learning management system. In this paper we present the notion of “checking out” complex resources from a digital library for offline download or exchange with another digital library or learning management system. We present a mechanism that enables the customization, download and exchange of complex resources. We show how the mechanism also supports digital library and learning management system exchange formats in a generic fashion with minimal overhead. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate open source software (OSS) for digital libraries and collection management and to propose different utilization scenarios based on the characteristics of the tools. Design/methodology/approach – The tools are assessed on the basis of their technical features and options, the type of the content they manage, the support for common library operations such as cataloging and circulation, the searching support and the interoperability options. Then they are evaluated by users and finally a number of usage scenarios are analyzed based on the results of the evaluation. Findings – The basic findings of the study is that open source digital library and collection management tools offer advanced operations and support various metadata and interoperability protocols with easy and user-friendly interfaces. Most of the tools are extensively used under various settings and establishments already. Language support for the interfaces should be extended with more languages and some tools with limited operations should be improved to be of practical use. Practical implications – The findings of the paper could be used support the selection of specific open source tools for various types of establishments. Originality/value – The study reviews the characteristics of a few OSS for digital libraries and collection management and reveals their specific strengths and weaknesses. It also presents a number of realistic scenarios and proposes the usage of specific tools based on time, technology and staff constraints.

With the rapid development of the Internet and cloud computing applications, the construction of a digital library in the cloud computing environment has been put on the agenda. Construction and management of digital libraries using cloud computing technology, can effectively utilize resources, reduce costs, achieve better information sharing, and improve the service function of the library. In this paper, studies digital library based on cloud computing. Firstly, introduces the characteristics and establish principles of digital library based on cloud computing; secondly, elaborated the concept and work principle of cloud computing; then, describes the key technology of cloud computing, and a detailed introduction of virtual storage technology in digital library; and finally introduced cloud computing digital library service model, including cloud software as a service layer (SaaS), cloud platform as a service layer (PaaS), cloud infrastructure as a service layer (IaaS).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implications of current theories that advocate for minimal levels of description in digital collections. Specifically, this paper looks at the archival theory of “More Product, Less Process” and its encouragement of collection-level description. The purpose of the study was to analyze how levels of description impact resource retrieval. Design/methodology/approach This study analyzed 35 images from a New York Public Library (NYPL) digital collection present on the NYPL website and on Flickr. The methodology was designed to reflect users’ information seeking behavior for image collections. There were two research questions guiding this study: what are the descriptive terms used to describe items in digital collections? and what is the success rate of retrieving resources using assigned descriptive terms? Findings The results of this study revealed that the images from the NYPL collection were more difficult to find on the institution’s website as compared with Flickr. These findings suggest that lesser levels of description in digital collections hinder resource retrieval. Research limitations/implications These findings suggest that lesser description levels hurt the findability of resources. In the wake of theories such as “More Product, Less Process”, information professionals must find ways to assign metadata to individual materials in digital image collections. Originality/value Recent research concerning description levels of digital collections is several years old and focuses mostly on the usefulness of collection-level metadata as a supplement to or substitute for item-level metadata. Few, if any, studies exist that explore the implications of description levels on resource retrievability and findability. This study is also unique in that it discusses these implications in the context of less-is-more theories of archival processing.

Purpose This study aims to understand the technical and operational challenges encountered by multilingual digital libraries and their strategies to solve problems in sustaining multilinguality services for digital libraries. Design/methodology/approach Using the multiple-case method, this study investigated two digital libraries that have sustained multilinguality for over a decade: the World Digital Library and the Digital Library of the Caribbean. Findings This study identified eight factors that contributed to the success of the two multilingual digital libraries and eight technical and operational challenges they have faced. A framework for digital libraries to sustain multilinguality is proposed. This framework illustrates the challenges and strategies to address the challenges in 11 aspects: creation, leadership, collaboration, content, metadata, translation, funding, technology, preservation, staffing and copyright. Research limitations/implications This study focused on two multilingual digital libraries administered in the USA, though they do not fully represent multilingual digital libraries in the USA. Therefore, the findings from the study may not apply to multilingual digital libraries the USA or other countries. As on-site interviews of both digital libraries were conducted at the beginning of 2019, the timeframe of this study is up to that date. Practical implications With more users worldwide seeking information online, more digital libraries will be providing multilingual services. This study provides guidelines to digital library developers and archivists for building and sustaining their digital libraries or archives. The experience and lessons learned from these two digital libraries may also help to better understand challenges and use effective strategies in building and sustaining multilinguality. Social implications The users and communities of digital libraries will be able to learn the benefits and challenges as related to building and sustaining digital library services. These services always need support to better serve their users and communities. Originality/value As the first multiple-case research that investigates in-depth challenges and approaches of digital libraries in sustaining multilinguality, this study presents a general picture of how the two digital libraries have succeeded in sustaining multilinguality. Theoretically, the study enriches the literature by providing a more comprehensive sustainability framework for multilinguality. This framework specifies possible aspects to consider for gaining sustainability of multilingual digital libraries and offers useful guidelines and insights for the digital library community to build multilingual services.

General Background: Metadata interoperability is a critical foundation for the effective development and management of digital libraries, enabling extensive, open, and sustainable access to information. Specific Background: Existing research predominantly adopts a positivistic paradigm, emphasizing technical conformity to metadata syntax, format validity, and interoperability protocols such as OAI-PMH and Dublin Core. Knowledge Gap: This technical focus often neglects social, semantic, and institutional contexts, resulting in limited adaptability to diverse user needs and institutional environments. Aims: This study introduces the sociotechnical paradigm as an alternative framework for understanding and enhancing metadata interoperability. Results: Through a literature review and reference to digital library development models, the research demonstrates how the sociotechnical paradigm integrates technological systems with social dynamics, institutional policies, and localized meaning-making processes. Novelty: The study reframes metadata interoperability not merely as a technical process but as a collaborative, participatory, and semantic negotiation among stakeholders. Implications: By embedding sociotechnical principles, digital libraries can evolve as adaptive socio-information systems that reflect user contexts, embrace diversity of meaning, and strengthen inclusivity in knowledge access. The libraries must be able to transform into a digital library so they can build a digital society and serve the digital generation. Problems occur when the library itself fails to develop the digital culture of its employees which results in the failure of transformation into a digital library. This article is an experience in undergoing and observing the efforts of the Library of East Kalimantan Province to transform itself into a digital library. This effort has lasted until now, where one of the obstacles is that most employees are digital immigrant generations. Data collection was done by remembering and writing down the process from 1992 to the present. The analysis process was employed by looking at every meaning of the writing in the diary (content analysis). In 2015, The Library Agency of East Kalimantan Province of Indonesia obtained an A rating in the management of digital libraries from the National Library of Indonesia. There are three factors that need to be considered in the transformation effort, namely formal and informal education for employees, leadership, and employee mental development. This article is beneficial for government institutions in facing the constraints of transformation into digital libraries, especially dealing with employees who are mostly immigrant digital generations.

The main objectives of the study were to identify key features of the digital library management system (DLMS) for developing and managing digital libraries, to reveal the satisfaction level of the library professionals in using digital library management system, and the problems being encountered in using these systems. The current study was quantitative in nature as quantitative measures were applied through a survey research strategy. Keeping in view the nature of the study, a purposive sampling technique was used to collect data from the target librarians who had been involved in operating digital library systems for building digital libraries in their respective libraries. Descriptive and inferential statistical tests were used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that in most of the university libraries in Pakistan, free and open source software (FOSS) had been implemented. DSpace was the most widely used software by library professionals in Pakistan. Key features of the digital library software included a user-friendly interface, customization, reliability and security, use of metadata standards (Dublin Core), web-based, advanced searching, consultancy and technical support, sharing e-books to devices (mobile, tabs), full-text searching, use of Boolean operators, and access control. The study recommended that library professionals of universities should be careful in planning library digitization and they should consider the above features before implementing any digital library software in their libraries.

Purpose: The uniqueness and functionalities of library services in acquiring, organizing, preserving and publicly make available and accessible information resources either in an electronic or printed formats have called for re-evaluation of all institutions that work with information, data and knowledge. Digital innovation trends has automatically paved the way for knowledge sharing among Libraries, specifically, within the information professionals and institutions. This paper explores and assesses comprehensively the various facets that are involved in knowledge sharing and digital innovation that would put vast development to the practicing of librarianship globally. Methodology: The exploratory approach was adopted by the study. The exploratory literature review approach is a research method that involves systematically reviewing existing literature to gain preliminary insights into an emerging or under-researched topic. It is commonly used to identify knowledge gaps, generate new research questions, and establish a foundation for further study. The major elements of knowledge sharing and digitization of library practices enabled by socialization, externalization, internalization and combination (SECI) model, are explored in detail. Implication: Library and information professionals need to brace up to meet the future challenges and take the lead in every competitive environment of information as communication technology evolves. With the release of version 3 of the library, the use of the library is expected to grow and expand into newer areas, such as digital library infrastructure management.Originality/valueThis paper fills a gap in the digital library management literature by exploring the applicability of the ITIL framework as a means for more effectively developing and delivering services in IT organizations that support digital libraries.

The field of study of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has developed over the past 50 years or so, producing an array of now mature technology, such as automatic morphological analysis, word sense disambiguation, parsing, anaphora resolution, natural language generation, named entity recognition, etc. The proliferation of large digital collections (evolving into Digital Libraries) and the emerging economic value of information demand efficient solutions for managing the information which is available, but which is not always easy to find. This chapter presents the requirements for handling documents in digital libraries and explains how existing NLP technology can be used to facilitate the task of document management.

Digital libraries are collections of digital content and services selected by a curator for use by a particular user community. Digital libraries offer direct access to the content of a wide variety of intellectual works, including text, audio, video, and data; and may offer a variety of services supporting search, access, and collaboration. In the last decade digital libraries have rapidly become ubiquitous because they offer convenience, expanded access, and search capabilities not present in traditional libraries. This has greatly altered how library users find and access information, and has put pressure on traditional libraries to take on new roles. However, information professionals have raised compelling concerns regarding the sizeable gaps in the holdings of digital libraries, about the preservation of existing holdings, and about sustainable economic models. This chapter presents an overview of the history, advantages, disadvantages, and design principles relating to digital libraries, and highlights important controversies and trends.
