Universal Design for Learning and Assistive Technology

This paper addresses one-size-fits-all curricula issue by integrating universal design for learning (UDL) as an innovative pedagogical approach for creating learning spaces for all students in the classroom - regardless of their ability and facilitates instructional adaptations that bring students together as a community of common learners. In this study, digital technologies were incorporated to support three UDL principles (multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement). The quantitative results of this research study revealed that students of Grade 3 exhibited physical engagement after receiving the UDL-infused instructions, but this gain was not significant in comparison to those who received the conventional instructions. Moreover, the gains were not significant in terms of emotional and cognitive engagement. Whereas, the qualitative themes that emerged in this study, under classroom environment and three factors of engagement - cognitive, emotional and physical, indicate that UDL provides teachers with a useful model for creating an enabling environment for all students to learn and engage.

In light of the need to prepare reflective and effective teachers who can differentiate their instruction to support the learning of all students in inclusive classrooms, this article describes the collaborative process faculty have used to incorporate universal design for learning (UDL) and evidence-based practice (EBP) into an inclusive teacher education program’s curriculum and practicum experiences. Initially, faculty mapped the curriculum by agreeing upon a common definition of UDL and EBP, reviewing the research to create EBP documentation charts, which were used to constructing self-assessment tools known as innovation configurations (IC). Faculty used the IC to identify and address the strengths and gaps within the program’s courses and clinical experiences and align courses with online interactive instructional resources related to UDL and EBP. To bridge the gap between research and practice and guide educators in making evidence-informed decisions, faculty developed a 10-step practice-based evidence assessment and instructional model to collect and analyze classroom-based data about the efficacy, acceptability, and fidelity of one’s instructional practices and use of UDL and EBP. Faculty revised and field-tested a lesson plan template that prompted educators to personalize their instruction and make it more explicit by addressing such factors as student diversity and collaboration, and employing UDL, EBP, instructional and assistive technology and formative and summative assessment. Faculty also redesigned the program’s lesson observation form used to better evaluate preservice teachers working in inclusive classrooms and provide them with feedback related to their effective use of EBP, UDL, instructional and assistive technology, and assessment and classroom management strategies. The lesson observation form also was revised to make it more reflective of the program’s curriculum reform efforts related to the use of UDL and EBP, and to align it with the national teacher education accreditation standards, national and statewide teacher evaluation, curriculum and teacher education certification standards.

The integration of universal design learning principles and methodologies into pedagogical practices has gained significant attention in recent years. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that emphasizes creating accessible and inclusive educational experiences to accommodate all students, including diverse learners. This study explores the implementation of UDL principles in teaching mathematics in inclusive classrooms in Sri Lanka. The aim of this study was to identify how a teacher uses lesson plans according to UDL and to identify the challenges when applying UDL frameworks to make lesson plans. The phenomenological research design, belonging to the qualitative approach was used as the research methodology. The sample was selected under non-random sampling. Observations and interviews were used to collect data. Data analysis was conducted using narrative analysis and thematic analysis. The study highlights that the teacher did her best to represent three core principles of UDL: (1) providing multiple means of representation, (2) providing multiple means of action and expression, and (3) providing multiple means of engagement. Furthermore, the research identifies challenges in adopting UDL practices, including resource constraints, lack of awareness among educators, and limited professional development opportunities. Addressing these barriers is critical to successfully integrating UDL principles into mainstream education systems.

This article discusses an evolving understanding of the relationship of assistive technology (AT) to student achievement. Clarifying the compensatory nature of AT and its role in creating a 'floor of opportunity' for students with disabilities, the authors then emphasize the importance of AT for access to and productivity within both the life skills and academic curricula. The distinction between AT, instructional technology, and universal design for learning (UDL) is clarified. Emphasis is then placed on three distinct aspects of the educational process for students with developmental disabilities in which the 'consideration' of AT is involved. These include IEP development, including placement alternatives; instructional interventions; and student progress monitoring. A statement is then made regarding the outcomes of AT interventions–student achievement in the academic and life skills curricula as evidenced by district-or state-wide measures of student progress.

Transition from primary (elementary) to secondary school can be both an exciting and a daunting prospect for young adolescents. Ensuring that students quickly settle into their new secondary school environment is the goal of transition programmes employed by schools. These programmes typically comprise a number of discrete and interrelated initiatives that often commence in the year prior to the move and continue during the initial months in the new school. These activities generally include specific initiatives for both the students and their parents. The needs of both groups are many and varied. It is critical that whatever transition events and strategies are planned, the needs of all students and parents are catered for. In this article the authors propose that the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) may provide a useful basis for the development of transition programmes that address the needs of all participants. UDL is based on three principles which are: multiple means of engagement, multiple means of representation, and multiple means of action and expression. Examples outlining how these principles can be applied before, during and after transition are provided. The authors conclude with the proposition that research be conducted in a variety of cultural contexts and across countries to investigate whether transition programmes based on UDL principles better enable schools to meet the needs of all transitioning students and their parents.

Teaching on both the Irish Standards Based Apprenticeship (SBA) and an undergraduate Level 7 practical focussed degree highlighted pedagogical differences in approaches to teaching and learning. These differences focused mainly on the rigid structure of the SBA with very little room to engage in deep learning with the curriculum. As a reflective practitioner I engaged in a process to determine what, if anything I could do within the boundaries of the SBA to encourage a deeper engagement. Having completed a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) programme I set about designing learning resources that could be used across both the SBA and the undergraduate degree. These resources were three instructional videos focussed on a particularly complex task, namely the Computer Numerical Control (CNC)/Alphacam module. My experience teaching this module demonstrates the difficulty the students have grappling with its requirements. In adhering to UDL guidelines this resource mainly explores the ‘Multiple Means of Representation’ section. The lesson was divided into 3 separate videos, to be viewed in order, to guide the students through the process. The videos were made available in the virtual learning environment where engagement could be tracked and the initial roll out shows excellent engagement. Feedback from students was gathered through Likert scale questionnaires and qualitative feedback and has been overwhelmingly positive. I am now looking to implement this into my undergraduate teaching while also expanding more into apprenticeship teaching.

The rapid expansion of digital technologies within educational systems has generated renewed attention to issues of accessibility and inclusion. While technology is frequently promoted as a solution to educational inequities, its actual impact depends on how effectively accessibility and inclusive design principles are embedded into digital learning environments. This paper critically examines the role of technology for accessibility with a particular focus on digital tools and inclusive design frameworks such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Drawing on empirical and theoretical literature from Scopus- and SSCI-indexed journals, the paper analyses how assistive technologies, digital learning platforms, and inclusive design strategies address physical, sensory, cognitive, linguistic, and socio-economic barriers to education. The discussion highlights both the transformative potential of technology and the structural challenges that limit its effectiveness, including the digital divide, uneven institutional capacity, and insufficient teacher preparedness. The paper argues that accessibility must be understood as a systemic and ethical commitment rather than a technical add-on. It concludes by emphasizing the need for policy alignment, inclusive pedagogical practices, and sustained investment in accessibility-oriented technology design to ensure that digital innovations meaningfully contribute to equitable and inclusive education. Background Educators and researchers have long emphasized the need to engage students in disciplinary thinking in order to develop rich, discipline-specific practices and habits of mind. Yet, these opportunities are often under-nurtured in today's classrooms and are especially limited for students with disabilities. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is one promising avenue for supporting all students to engage in disciplinary thinking (ways of knowing, reasoning, and doing specific to the discipline). This framework for teaching and learning suggests embedding options into curricula in order to expand learning opportunities for students with and without disabilities. Researchers have yet to investigate how UDL and disciplinary thinking can complement one another. Research Question This study explores the following question: How, if at all, do teachers working within a school that explicitly promotes the UDL framework use UDL to prompt students’ disciplinary thinking in English Language Arts (ELA)? Setting The study was conducted in a fifth grade classroom of an inclusive elementary school in an urban district in the northeast United States. Participants Participants included two fifth grade co-teachers and their class of 21 students with and without documented disabilities. Research Design This qualitative case study spanned a 10-week ELA unit. Data were gathered via videotaped observations, collection of instructional materials, interviews with the co-teachers, and collection of student work. CAST is a nonprofit education research and development organization that works to expand learning opportunities for all individuals through UDL. The analytic framework joined CAST's UDL Guidelines and common themes distilled from the literature that characterize disciplinary thinking in ELA. This framework was used as a starting place to code the co-teachers’ practice and students’ thinking. An open coding strategy was applied to capture emergent themes. Findings Data reveal that the co-teachers used specific strategies to create opportunities for all students to engage in disciplinary thinking. First, particular UDL guidelines/checkpoints were applied. For example, to support learners in “reading like writers,” the co-teachers applied strategies consistent with Guideline 6: “Provide options for executive functions,” encouraging students to develop the planning and organizational practices of expert readers and writers. Second, particular UDL guidelines/checkpoints were used in ways that are not explicitly suggested in the UDL Guidelines. For example, to support students in “reading for meaning” and “reading like writers,” the co-teachers’ strategies were generally consistent with Guideline 3: “Provide options for comprehension.” Yet, the co-teachers moved beyond “comprehension” by empowering students to construct their own sophisticated, disciplinary analyses. Conclusions The co-teachers’ instructional moves and the richness of students’ thinking offer important implications for future iterations of the UDL Guidelines and suggest that all learners can and should be challenged to engage in discipline-specific practices and habits of mind.

HyFlex course design is a delivery model that provides students the flexibility to attend face-to-face, online synchronously, or asynchronously. In order to support students in HyFlex college classes, instructors must prepare engaging, accessible, and equitable learning opportunities for all learners. However, it can be difficult for college instructors to create learning environments that help students feel belonging and engagement in HyFlex courses. In this Quick Fix article, we explain how the guidelines for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) overlap with and align with Beatty’s fundamental values of HyFlex learning, specifically in bimodal course design (i.e., online synchronous and face-to-face). UDL allows for diverse learners to participate in learning experiences through multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression. These components are all broadly tied to the HyFlex value of accessibility, which allows access for all learners to diverse modalities of instruction, but UDL and HyFlex can be leveraged to support all students both with and without disabilities. We first expand upon how UDL guidelines and HyFlex values complement each other, and then we give examples of strategies to put into action for using UDL in HyFlex college courses. While there has been much research on each UDL and HyFlex approaches to support college instructors, the merging of the values within these theories is novel, and this pairing has implications for direct practice implementation in the classroom. This paper introduces a concept that can be further elaborated on in other conceptual works and potentially lead to new theoretical frameworks. Additionally, future research could explore how UDL and HyFlex approaches enhance each other in college courses and other areas of education.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a scientifically validated framework that guides educators in designing inclusive and effective curricula for all learners. Despite its global recognition, the integration of UDL into China’s educational system remains in its nascent stages, with limited research on its implementation. This study addresses this gap by exploring the perceptions and practices of UDL among inclusive education teachers in China. Using a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 185 questionnaires to examine teachers’ knowledge, skills and engagement related to UDL. The findings reveal three key insights: First, inclusive education teachers demonstrated the highest level of proficiency in implementing multiple means of representation, though further refinement is needed to optimise its application. Second, teachers exhibited comparatively lower effectiveness in applying multiple means of action and expression, highlighting significant potential for improvement in this domain. Third, teachers displayed moderate competence in employing multiple means of engagement, indicating a need for continued development and reinforcement of these practices. Overall, the study underscores the necessity for targeted professional development and pedagogical enhancements to better integrate UDL principles into China’s inclusive education system. These findings contribute to the growing body of literature on UDL implementation in non-Western contexts and provide actionable insights for policymakers and educators aiming to foster inclusive learning environments.

This case study investigates the strategies used to deliver online course content to postsecondary students with learning disabilities who were enrolled in a history course. The purpose was to examine whether course design modifications had any impact on students' attitudes or performance, and if so, which were most beneficial to students with learning disabilities. This study uses Universal Design for Learning (UDL) methods that can be used for all students, not just those with learning or physical disabilities, and includes how proper use of UDL can benefit these learners in the ever changing online learning environment. The findings reflected no apparent differences between the 2 students with learning disabilities and 3 without disabilities in regard to the use of the instructional media. However, some of the most important instructional modifications that might have benefited students with learning disabilities were inaccessible due to technical problems. Results might have differed in a course where students did not experience these difficulties. The results do, however, provide insight into students' reactions to specific modifications and present researchers and course designers with recommendations for improving the experiences of all students in online courses.

At the heart of universal design for learning (UDL) is an appreciation of the variability and diversity of learners. This chapter reflects on the experience of embedding the principles of UDL in the context of a large, higher education class comprising 400+ students. The case study examines the deliberate alignment of the multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement pillars of UDL with the curriculum, teaching, learning, and assessment pillars of pedagogy. Creating a variety of avenues to the core concepts addressed the diversity in the group, allowing for deep engagement with some complex ideas. Provision of choice around assessment developed a sense of agency as students could tailor their work to align with their interests and experiences while simultaneously meeting the learning outcomes, thereby enhancing engagement. The principles of embedding UDL in large class pedagogy can be applied across higher education albeit they may need to be adapted for the specific requirements of the content area.

Universal design for learning (UDL)-an instructional design framework that promotes expert learning by promoting accessibility and reducing of barriers to learning-is gaining momentum on the global stage. However, UDL implementations with deaf or deafdisabled learners remain limited. This study examined how UDL enabled educators of deafdisabled learners to design instruction that promoted independence. This study asked, (1) What patterns emerged when teachers used UDL to design instruction for deafdisabled students? and (2) How did teachers of deafdisabled students use UDL to promote learner-centered skills and independence? Following a UDL training, teachers designed, implemented, and reflected on a UDL-based lesson. Results indicate that the use of teacher-driven guidelines was impacted by characteristics of the students, teacher, and lesson. While teachers noted the importance of learner-driven guidelines, they experienced challenges that limited implementation. This study illustrates how instruction targeting learner-driven UDL guidelines can promote independence in students who are deafdisabled. Findings indicate that engaging in additional teacher education and research is key to ensuring educators of deafdisabled learners have opportunities to develop the knowledge and skill to understand and apply UDL.

Universal design for learning is an academic framework based on research in the learning sciences, which include cognitive neuroscience that develops flexible learning mastery environments and learning knowledge of spaces which can accommodate persons with differences. Inclusive classroom is a general classroom in which students with and without difficulties study together. Inclusive schools welcome and meet various academic, social, emotional differences which in turn ensure equitable and quality curricular transaction of all students. The quality education is the fourth goal of the 17 Sustainable Developmental Goals. It ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. The present study helps in understanding the role of teaching and learning methods to achieve an inclusive and equitable quality educational community. In this research the preliminary data were collected through interviews and discussion on universal design for learning by teachers and learners. The main focus of the study is to find out universal design for learning in inclusive class room to ensure inclusive and equitable quality class room. The aim of this work is to analyze the responses of a group of teachers about measures based on the principles of universal design for learning. The number of participants was 150, all of them from the area of the special education. The questionnaire was created to this study, taking into account what is describes in the Guidelines 2.0 on Universal Design for Learning. The main results indicate that there are three factors that are related to what has been described in the paradigm of the universal design for learning. The authors discuss on the need for studies that support the use of inclusive paradigms, where the universal design for learning is a suitable method for this purpose.
