Vehicle to vehicle communication using Zigbee protocol

Traffic prediction is a critical element of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), enhancing road safety, traffic flow, and environmental sustainability. By leveraging big data and machine learning, ITS optimizes fuel consumption, route planning, and traffic signal control. This study evaluates the performance of four machine learning models—K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Naïve Bayes, Decision Tree, and Random Forest—for classifying traffic conditions based on 11 months of vehicle count data collected every 15 minutes. The traffic levels are categorized into four classes: Heavy Traffic, Medium Traffic, No Traffic, and Traffic Jam. Among the models, Random Forest achieved the highest overall accuracy (99%) and delivered strong precision and recall across all traffic levels, especially in distinguishing between complex traffic patterns. KNN also showed high accuracy but required more computational resources. Decision Tree performed comparably, particularly for Heavy Traffic, while Naïve Bayes struggled with lower precision and recall due to its limitations in handling complex data distributions. The results underscore the robustness of Random Forest for real-time traffic condition classification and support its integration into ITS for effective, data-driven traffic and congestion management in urban environments.

Road safety, traffic congestion and efficiency of the transport sector are major global concerns. Improving this is the primary objective of intelligent transport systems (ITS). Having Internet of things (IoT) based solutions for ITS would enable motorists to obtain prior contextual guidance to reduce congestion and avoid potential hazards. IoT based solutions enabling collection of data from client nodes in a wireless sensor network in the transport environment implementing ITS goals is studied. The parameters to be monitored, type of sensors and communication related design parameters are identified to develop an effective IoT based solution. Road safety techniques studied include distance sensing, improper driving detection and accident prevention, weather related events and negligent driving detection and accident avoidance. Vehicle to vehicle communication and vehicle to infrastructure based channels are studied. Wireless communication technologies suitable for the channels are studied. Additional benefits and services that can be added to a system with the IoT approach are also studied. The effectiveness of such a system is studied with the use of validation framework. Multiple case studies of current and future IoT based ITS along with the challenges in the application is discussed.

Road accidents and traffic congestion are challenging issues for global transport systems. Autonomous vehicles and connected vehicles are promising technologies to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion. In this paper we investigate the performance of connected vehicles and assess the positive impact of connected vehicles on the collaborative road safety applications. To achieve the research goal, we first develop a low cost and scalable connected vehicles testbed, which consists of laptops equipped with Wi-Fi transceivers. The main concern is that collaborative road safety applications need to be widely tested with vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communications. However, the commercial dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) devices are very expensive, which makes it difficult to set up a large connected vehicles testbed. Based on the experiments on the V2V communications, the performance of forward collision avoidance under emergency events, which is a representative collaborative road safety application, is analysed. Interesting insights to the performance of V2V and the improvement of collision avoidance with V2V are obtained. The research works could be used for the analysis of connected vehicles impact on other collaborative roads safety applications.

In response to escalating road safety challenges within Algeria, marked by rising traffic volumes and urban development, the "TariqAmn Algeria" initiative emerges as a groundbreaking approach in traffic management. This study delineates the development and deployment of this innovative system, which leverages intelligent traffic signs, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging, using laser light to measure distances) radar, and proactive brake control technologies, embedded within a robust traffic management framework. The system's dynamic adaptation to real-time traffic conditions and its enforcement of speed compliance are central to its design. Rigorous evaluations through SUMO (Simulation of Urban Mobility, a traffic simulation software) simulations and field tests in high-risk urban settings affirm its efficacy, demonstrating a 60% reduction in traffic incidents and a 50% reduction in speeding violations. By marrying local cultural insights with cutting-edge technology, "TariqAmn Algeria" not only enhances immediate road safety but also establishes a new paradigm in traffic management systems. The findings illuminate the significant scalability potential of the system, promising broader applications in enhancing road safety and adherence to traffic regulations across various regions, such as densely populated urban areas, high-traffic corridors, and accident-prone black spots. This initiative underscores the critical role of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in modern road safety strategies and sets a precedent for future technological advancements in the field.

A Convolutional Approach to Traffic Sign Detection presents a deep learning-based method using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for accurate traffic sign detection and classification. The system follows a two-stage pipeline: region proposal and sign classification, leveraging data augmentation and transfer learning for improved performance. It demonstrates robustness to challenges like poor lighting and occlusion and supports real-time operation, making it suitable for ADAS and autonomous vehicles. Experimental results show high accuracy across datasets, highlighting its potential in enhancing road safety and intelligent transportation systems. Enhancing road safety through advanced predictive analytics in V2X communication networks

Comprised of a broad range of diverse technologies, including information processing, communications, control, and electronics, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) were first introduced as a means to solve the conflict between constantly increasing travel demand and insufficient transportation infrastructure. However, the impact of ITS on road safety was soon realized, and it became one of the major purposes of some ITS systems instead of only a side product. This paper summarizes the impacts of ITS technologies on road safety and the challenges of ITS safety evaluation. Based on the evaluation of collected ITS benefits information, this paper concludes that a variety of ITS technologies have the potential to make a substantial contribution to road safety and thereby have a substantial positive economic impact in the United States.

The dismal performance of the traditional traffic congestion measures and motorist attitudes on Nigeria roads have not only made traffic flow unpredictable and worsening but also worrisome and defiling every measures put-in-place by the Government. To solve these problems, the study assessed traffic congestion and Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in Ibadan, Nigeria. In achieving this, the study examined among others, factors aiding traffic congestion; effectiveness of the existing traffic congestion measures; and the performance and disposition to the use of ITS in the study area. Systematic random sampling was used to administer 386 copies of a questionnaire on commercial motorists, while data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential (Pearson Chi-Square and Fisher's Exact Tests) statistics. Findings revealed that faulty intersections (3.586) and excesses of traffic officers (3.558) were worsening factors aiding traffic congestion in Ibadan city. Meanwhile, electronic traffic signalization (3.558) and law enforcement and regulation (3.499) were rated the most effective existing traffic congestion measures. In other words, real-time traffic signal devices (3.609); automated travel advisory system (3.595) and road congestion pricing devices (3.581) were highly rated and favourably disposed to use ITS. However, the Chi-Square Tests shows that the use Intelligent Transport System is statistically influenced by users' level of education (Sig. value < 0.05). The study concludes that there is a total necessity and willingness to use ITS in the study area. Hence, the study recommends exigent and holistic approach in the provision and enforcement of ITS towards mitigating congestion and other suggestions for improved traffic flow in Nigerian cities including Ibadan.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to present the results of a study on the perception and evaluation of intelligent communication and transportation systems, as well as their management, by residents of cities in the Silesian Voivodeship who travel by car, bicycle (scooter), or on foot, as factors contributing to safe and fast movement within the city. Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted using a proprietary survey based on the Consumer Satisfaction Index (CSI) methodology, and the analysis of the survey results was preceded by a brief literature review on the subject. Findings: The study made it possible to determine how road users evaluate the functioning of the intelligent communication and transportation system in their cities, which factors are the most and least satisfactory for them, as well as the importance they assign to these solutions. Research limitations/implications: The study had a limited scope as it was a one-time survey. It is advisable to continue and expand the sample size for future studies to allow for comparative analyses. Practical implications: The article may provide managers of intelligent communication and transportation systems in cities with knowledge about the expected outcomes of their operation for road users. Social implications: Utilizing the research results may enable better adaptation of ITS to the needs of road users and enhance road safety. Originality/value: The study included drivers, cyclists (scooter riders), and pedestrians. In contrast, most similar studies are limited to verifying the opinions of drivers. Half of the world’s population resides in cities and this percentage is going to rise in the coming years. This rapid transformation of the economy and society is making traditional city management redundant. Intensive urbanization has brought with it some challenges. Scanty resources, population growth, increased carbon footprint, reduced air quality, congestion on roads, depriving health status, and falling food quality, all are prominent parts of cities. Does this bring a question in mind is accelerated growth sustainable? The answer and solution to this is an adaption of the Smart City Concept. A smart city integrates all the available technology with the requirements of city development and builds infrastructure which can improve the quality of life of citizens. Smart cities are designed in a manner to use minimum resources with maximum efficiency in all areas of urban life. It provides smart solutions using smart technologies. Urban needs and technological advancements meet in smart cities. It manages cities more quickly and effectively by using AI, IT technologies, and robotic process automation. Intelligent transportation, intelligent energy, intelligent governance, intelligent security, intelligent healthcare are all central to the idea of smart cities. The emphasis of this essay is on smart transit as a component of smart cities. The movement of people and goods across several geographical boundaries has been significantly aided by the transportation sector. Globally, the majority of smart cities face logistical and transportation issues. Both the fast growing human population and the increase in the number of cars on the road are to blame for this. In order to design and run a sustainable transportation system, technology may be of great assistance. Robotic systems for real-time vehicle data collection, traffic management, and using mobility on demand in trip planning through a single user interface have emerged as cities struggle with traffic congestion. The transportation industry, which faces difficulties including traffic congestion, unanticipated delays, and routing issues that cause businesses to lose money, has successfully used robotic process automation. Robotic process automation provides reliable results and affordable solutions while reducing uncertainty in the decision-making process. It is very helpful in designing and running a successful transit system. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) systems for obtaining real-time data from vehicles, buses, and trucks for traffic management and using mobility on demand in trip planning through a single user interface have emerged as cities struggle with poor management and congestion. By examining different uses of robotic process automation, it is possible to evaluate precise prediction and detection models that are intended to forecast traffic volume, an appropriate route, traffic conditions, accurate information about timing, incidents, and which time and roadway for transport are suitable for running and mobility. The application of RPA in smart cities could be seen in Intelligent Transportation Systems’ Traffic Management, Public Transportation, Safety Management, Manufacturing, and Logistics. The research focuses on areas of concern for smart cities in the sphere of the transportation sector and related difficulties that may be solved via robotic process automation. The article emphasizes the challenges and solutions for making smart transportation more effective by using Intelligent Robotic Transportation Systems.

This study examines India's initiatives to enhance road safety via the Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) and the e-Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR). The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has been executing many measures to improve road safety. Road accidents have become a significant threat in India. iRAD aims to address this issue by establishing a comprehensive road accident database to assist authorities in making proactive choices and ensuring 'Better and Safer Roads for All.' The main goals were to assess the efficacy of these activities in enhancing road safety measures, enabling precise data gathering, and optimizing accident reporting systems. The initiative will provide diverse insights by studying the national road accident data using data analytics techniques. The proposed system would provide analytical data via a Monitoring & Reporting Dashboard and an Analytics Dashboard to enhance understanding and support forecasting and decision-making by Apex Authorities for the formulation of new policies and strategies. The project's outcome will be enhanced road safety, namely 'Safe Road for All' in India

In the realm of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), vehicular communication technologies such as Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC), Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), and LoRa 2.4 GHz play crucial roles in enhancing road safety, reducing traffic congestion, and improving transport efficiency. This article explores the integration of these communication protocols within smart intersections, emphasizing their capabilities and synergies. DSRC, based on IEEE 802.11p, provides reliable short-range communication with data rates up to 27 Mbps and latencies below 50 ms, ideal for real-time safety applications. C-V2X leverages LTE and 5G networks, offering broader coverage up to 10 km and supporting data rates up to 100 Mbps, with latencies as low as 20 ms in direct communication mode (PC5). LoRa 2.4 GHz, known for its long-range (up to 15 km in rural areas, 1–2 km in urban settings) and low-power characteristics, offers data rates between 0.3 and 37.5 kbps, suitable for non-critical data exchange and infrastructure monitoring. The study evaluates the performance and interoperability of these technologies in urban environments, focusing on data latency, transmission reliability, and scalability. Experimental results from simulated and real-world scenarios show that DSRC maintains reliable communication within 1 km with minimal interference. C-V2X demonstrates superior scalability and coverage, maintaining robust communication over several kilometers in high-density urban settings. LoRa 2.4 GHz exhibits excellent penetration through urban obstacles, maintaining connectivity and efficient data transmission with packet error rates below 10%.

Integration of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Vehicle to Vehicle communication (V2V) provide a wide range of applications with the potential to enhance road safety and prevent traffic accidents. During the last few years, significant attention has been paid to developing and implementing both systems, since V2V and ADAS are considered as key technologies of future Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Prior to the implementation of these systems on vehicles, comprehensive analysis through exhaustive and realistic simulations is vital. This paper presents the developed methodology to improve road safety by modelling and simulating different penetration rates of V2V and ADAS-ACC (i.e. percentage of vehicles which have been equipped with either system) on three developed simulation scenarios in SUMO and “Scene Suite” showing the impact on road safety.

This article explores the intricate relationship between mental health disorders and their potential impact on road safety, with a particular emphasis on Cameroon. Mental health conditions such as Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Substance Use Disorder, and borderline personality disorder are examined in the context of driving behaviors, road rage incidents, and overall road safety. The objective is not to stigmatize individuals with mental illness but to highlight the importance of screening, support, and attention to mental health in the context of increasing road accidents. The paper discusses the symptoms of these disorders and how they may increase the risk of road accidents. It also explores the roles of government, community, and individuals in enhancing road safety through mental health support. Evidence-based data specific to road safety in Cameroon and other developing countries are utilized to support the arguments. Recommendations for interventions and support mechanisms are provided, emphasizing a non-discriminatory and objective approach.

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is the emerging transportation which comprises of the advanced technologies such as wireless communications, video vehicle detection, distributed system architectures, human machine interface, sensing and actuating, to improve safety of the passengers, traffic congestion, fuel consumption and optimize other services of the transportation system such as real time traffic situation, electronic toll collection, automatic road enforcement and hot lanes. The current ITS systems lacks self-adaptive capability to take spontaneous decisions. The environment of the ITS system is very complex so optimal decisions cannot be taken but a good enough decision can be taken which fulfills the requirement of the system. To build an ITS system having the capability to adapt itself, this paper presents the self-adaptive requirements for the ITS. To elicit the requirements for ITS, we use scenarios based model and goal based model using the requirements Engineering processes (Elicitation, Elaboration, Specification, Validation) with MAPE-K. We use Knowledge Acquisition on Automated Specification (KAOS) approach to build goal model using Objectiver tool, and use RELAX syntax to elicit adaptive requirements for ITS.
