Very Simple 2-adic Representations and Hyperelliptic Jacobians

Let $K$ be a global field of characteristic different from 2 and $u(x)\in K[x]$ be an irreducible polynomial of even degree $2g\ge 6$, whose Galois group over $K$ is either the full symmetric group $S_{2g}$ or the alternating group $A_{2g}$. We describe explicitly how to choose (infinitely many) pairs of distinct elements $t_1, t_2$ of $K$ such that the $g$-dimensional jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve $y^2=(x-t_1)(x-t_2))u(x)$ has no nontrivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closure of $K$ and has big $\ell$-adic monodromy.

Let k be a p-adic field of odd residue characteristic and let C be a hyperelliptic (or elliptic) curve defined by the affine equation Y 2=h(X). We discuss the index of C if h(X)=ɛf(X), where ɛ is either a non-square unit or a uniformising element in O k and f(X) a monic, irreducible polynomial with integral coefficients. If a root θ of f generates an extension k(θ) with ramification index a power of 2, we completely determine the index of C in terms of data associated to θ. Theorem 3.11 summarizes our results and provides an algorithm to calculate the index for such curves C.

Let K be a number field, and let C be a hyperelliptic curve over K with Jacobian J. Suppose that C is defined by an equation of the form for some irreducible monic polynomial of discriminant Δ and some element . Our first main result says that if there is a prime of K dividing but not (2Δ), then the image of the natural 2‐adic Galois representation is open in and contains a certain congruence subgroup of depending on the maximal power of dividing . We also present and prove a variant of this result that applies when C is defined by an equation of the form for distinct elements . We then show that the hypothesis in the former statement holds for almost all and prove a quantitative form of a uniform boundedness result of Cadoret and Tamagawa.

Let X be a subgroup of a group Y. The \\emphinterval (X, Y) is the set of subgroups of Y that contain X including X and Y. By local class field theory the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains a finite number of norm groups for any finite extension K of a 𝔭-adic number field k. In the present work we investigate the number of norm groups in the interval (N K/k K*, k*) for a given finite extension K/k of algebraic number fields. We prove that if K/k is an extension of prime degree, or of degree n such that the normal closure of K over k has the Galois group isomorphic to A n or S n , then the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains only the obvious two norm groups. Also, the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains a finite number of norm groups for any Galois extension of degree 4, and there are extensions with Galois groups order 8 for which the corresponding intervals contain a finite number of norm groups. The main theorem in our earlier work states that the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains infinitely many norm groups for any Galois extension of even degree that is not a 2-extension, the so-called 2𝔫-\\emphextensions. In the present work we generalize the main theorem to non-Galois 2𝔫-extensions K/k, and determine some subintervals of (N K/k K*, k*) that contain infinitely many norm groups. We then use this theorem to prove that the interval (N K/k K*, k*) contains infinitely many norm groups for any Galois 2-extension K/k with the Galois group that either contains an element of order 8 or contains the quaternion group Q8 of order 8, or Q8 is a homomorphic image of the Galois group.

In [17] the author proved that in characteristic 0 the jacobianJ(C)=J(Cf)of a hyperelliptic curve C=Cf: y2=f (x) has only trivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closureK a of the ground fieldKif the Galois group Gal(f) of the irreducible polynomialfЄK [x]is “very big”. Namely, if n = deg(f) ≥ 5 and Gal(f) is either the symmetric group anor the alternating group Anthen the ring End(J(Cf)) of Ka-endomorphisms ofJ(Cf)coincides with Z. The proof was based on an explicit description of the Galois moduleJ(Cf)2of points of order 2 onJ(Cf).Namely, the action of the Galois group Gal(K) factors through Gal(f) and the Gal(f)-moduleJ(Cf)2 could be easily described in terms of the (transitive) action of Gal(f) on the set Rfof roots off.

We prove that the number of unimodular integral n × n matrices in a norm ball whose characteristic polynomial has Galois group different than the full symmetric group Sn is of strictly lower order of magnitude than the number of all such matrices in the ball, as the radius increases. More generally, we prove a similar result for the Galois groups associated with elements in any connected semisimple linear algebraic group defined and simple over a number field F . Our method is based on the abstract large sieve method developed by Kowalski, and the study of Galois groups via reductions modulo primes developed by Jouve, Kowalski and Zywina. The two key ingredients are a uniform quantitative lattice point counting result, and a non-concentration phenomenon for lattice points in algebraic subvarieties of the group variety, both established previously by the authors. The results answer a question posed by Rivin and by Jouve, Kowalski and Zywina, who have considered Galois groups of random products of elements in algebraic groups.

Let p be an odd prime number, and a be an integer divisible by p exactly once. We prove that the Galois group G of the trinomial X^{p^{2}}+aX+a over the field Q of rational number is either the full symmetric group S_{p^{2}} or G lies between AGL(1,p^{2}) and AGL(2,p)$. Furthermore, we establish conditions when G is S_{p^{2}}.

Одной из актуальных современных проблем алгебры и теории чисел является проблема существования и поиска фундаментальных S-единиц в гиперэллиптических полях. Проблема существования и поиска S-единиц в гиперэллиптических полях эквивалентна разрешимости норменного уравнения - функционального уравнения Пелля - с некоторыми дополнительными условиями на вид этого уравнения и его решения. Существуетглубокая связь между точками конечного порядка в якобиевом многообразии (якобиане) гиперэллиптической кривой и нетривиальными S-единицами соответствующего гиперэллиптического поля. Эта связь легла в основу предложенного В. П. Платоновым алгебраического подхода к известной фундаментальной проблеме об ограниченности кручения в якобиевых многообразиях гиперэллиптических кривых. Для эллиптических кривых над полем рациональных чисел проблема кручения была решена Мазуром в 1970-ых годах. Для кривых рода 2 и выше над полем рациональных чисел проблема кручения оказалась значительно сложнее, и пока далека от своего полного решения. Основные результаты, полученные к настоящему времени в этом направлении, относятся к описанию подгрупп кручения якобиевых многообразий конкретных гиперэллиптических кривых, а также к описанию некоторых семейств гиперэллиптических кривых рода g >= 2.В данной статье нами найден новый метод исследования разрешимости функциональных норменных уравнений, дающий полное описание гиперэллиптических кривых над полем рациональных чисел, якобиевы многообразия которых обладают точками кручения данных порядков. Наш метод основан на аналитическом изучении представителей дивизоров конечного порядка в группе классов дивизоров степени ноль и их представлений Мамфорда. В качестве иллюстрации работы нашего метода в данной статье непосредственно найдены все параметрические семейства гиперэллиптических кривых рода два над полем рациональных чисел, якобиевы многообразия которых обладают рациональными точками кручения порядков не превосходящих пяти. Более того, наш метод позволяет определить, какому найденному параметрическому семейству принадлежит данная кривая, якобиан которой обладает точкой кручения порядка, не превосходящего пяти.

We study the behaviour of the iterates of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind in p-adic fields. In particular, we determine in the field of complex p-adic numbers for p > 2, the periodic points of the p-th Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind. These periodic points are attractive points. We describe their basin of attraction. The classification of finite field extensions of the field of p-adic numbers ℚ p , enables one to locate precisely, for any integer ν ≥ 1, the ν-periodic points of T p : they are simple and the nonzero ones lie in the unit circle of the unramified extension of ℚ p , (p > 2) of degree ν. This generalizes a result, stated by M. Zuber in his PhD thesis, giving the fixed points of T p in the field ℚ p , (p > 2). As often happens, we consider separately the case p = 2. Also, if the integer n ≥ 2 is not divisible by p, then any fixed point w of T n is indifferent in the field of p-adic complex numbers and we give for p ≥ 3, the p-adic Siegel disc around w.

Let N ( d , G , X ) N(d, G, X) be the number of degree d d number fields K K with Galois group G G and whose discriminant D K D_K satisfies | D K | ≤ X |D_K| \le X . Under standard conjectures in diophantine geometry, we show that N ( 4 , A 4 , X ) ≪ ϵ X 2 / 3 + ϵ N(4, A_4, X) \ll _\epsilon X^{2/3+\epsilon } , and that there are ≪ ϵ N 3 + ϵ \ll _\epsilon N^{3+\epsilon } monic, quartic polynomials with integral coefficients of height ≤ N \le N whose Galois groups are smaller than S 4 S_4 , confirming a question of Gallagher. Unconditionally we have N ( 4 , A 4 , X ) ≪ ϵ X 5 / 6 + ϵ N(4, A_4, X) \ll _\epsilon X^{5/6 + \epsilon } , and that the 2 2 -class groups of almost all Abelian cubic fields k k have size ≪ ϵ D k 1 / 3 + ϵ \ll _\epsilon D_k^{1/3+\epsilon } . The proofs depend on counting integral points on elliptic fibrations.

Let λ ≤ κ be infinite cardinals and let Ω be a set of cardinality κ. The bounded permutation group Bλ(Ω), or simply Bλ, is the group consisting of all permutations of Ω which move fewer than λ points in Ω. We say that a permutation group G acting on Ω is a supplement of Bλ if BλG is the full symmetric group on Ω.In [7], Macpherson and Neumann claimed to have classified all supplements of bounded permutation groups. Specifically, they claimed to have proved that a group G acting on the set Ω is a supplement of Bλ if and only if there exists Δ ⊂ Ω with ∣Δ∣ < λ such that the setwise stabiliser G{Δ} acts as the full symmetric group on Ω ∖ Δ. However I have found a mistake in their proof. The aim of this paper is to examine conditions under which Macpherson and Neumann's claim holds, as well as conditions under which a counterexample can be constructed. In the process we will discover surprising links with cardinal arithmetic and Shelah's recently developed pcf theory.

Monodromy of rational curves on K3 surfaces of low genus

This chapter develops tools for a more penetrating study of algebraic number theory than was possible in Chapter V and concludes by formulating two of the main three theorems of Chapter V in the modern setting of “adeles” and “ideles” commonly used in the subject.Sections 1–5 introduce discrete valuations, absolute values, and completions for fields, always paying attention to implications for number fields and for certain kinds of function fields. Section 1 contains a prototype for all these notions in the construction of the fieldQp of p-adic numbers formed out of the rationals. Discrete valuations in Section 2 are a generalization of the order-of-vanishing function about a point in the theory of one complex variable. Absolute values in Section 3 are real-valued multiplicative functions that give a metric on a field, and the pair consisting of a field and an absolute value is called a valued field. Inequivalent absolute values have a certain independence property that is captured by the Weak Approximation Theorem. Completions in Section 4 are functions mapping valued fields into their metric-space completions. Section 5 concerns Hensel’s Lemma, which in its simplest form allows one to lift roots of polynomials over finite prime fields Fp to roots of corresponding polynomials over p-adic fields Qp.Section 6 contains the main theorem for investigating the fundamental question of how prime ideals split in extensions. Let K be a finite separable extension of a field F, let R be a Dedekind domain with field of fractions F, and let T be the integral closure of R in K. The question concerns the factorization of an ideal pT in T when p is a nonzero prime ideal in R. If Fp denotes the completion of F with respect to p, the theorem explains how the tensor product K ⊗F Fp splits uniquely as a direct sum of completions of valued fields. The theorem in effect reduces the question of the splitting of pT in T to the splitting of Fp in a complete field in which only one of the prime factors of pT plays a role.Section 7 is a brief aside mentioning additional conclusions one can draw when the extension K/F is a Galois extension.Section 8 applies the main theorem of Section 6 to an analysis of the different of K/F and ultimately to the absolute discriminant of a number field. With the new sharp tools developed in the present chapter, including a Strong Approximation Theorem that is proved in Section 8, a complete proof is given for the Dedekind Discriminant Theorem; only a partial proof had been accessible in Chapter V.Sections 9–10 specialize to the case of number fields and to function fields that are finite separable extensions of Fq (X), where Fq is a finite field. The adele ring and the idele group are introduced for each of these kinds of fields, and it is shown how the original field embeds discretely in the adeles and how the multiplicative group embeds discretely in the ideles. The main theorems are compactness theorems about the quotient of the adeles by the embedded field and about the quotient of the normalized ideles by the embedded multiplicative group. Proofs are given only for number fields. In the first case the compactness encodes the Strong Approximation Theorem of Section 8 and the Artin product formula of Section 9. We prove lower bounds for the transcendence degree of fields generated by values of the -adic exponential function. In particular, we estimate the transcendence degree of the field , where are algebraic (over the field of rational numbers) -adic numbers that form a basis of a finite extension of .

We study the unipotent Albanese map appearing in the non-abelian Chabauty method of Minhyong Kim. In particular we explore the explicit computation of the p-adic de Rham period map j^{dr}_n on elliptic and hyperelliptic curves over number fields via their universal unipotent connections {mathscr {U}}. Several algorithms forming part of the computation of finite level versions j^{dr}_n of the unipotent Albanese maps are presented. The computation of the logarithmic extension of {mathscr {U}} in general requires a description in terms of an open covering, and can be regarded as a simple example of computational descent theory. We also demonstrate a constructive version of a lemma of Hadian used in the computation of the Hodge filtration on {mathscr {U}} over affine elliptic and odd hyperelliptic curves. We use these algorithms to present some new examples describing the co-ordinates of some of these period maps. This description will be given in terms iterated p-adic Coleman integrals. We also consider the computation of the co-ordinates if we replace the rational basepoint with a tangential basepoint, and present some new examples here as well.
