Virtual Laboratory in Science Classroom: An Exploratory Study

This study investigates the utilisation of virtual laboratories as a supplement to conventional laboratory settings for conducting formal science experiments. Although previous research acknowledges the growing integration of digital tools in science education, there remains limited empirical evidence comparing the effectiveness of virtual and traditional laboratory experiences in supporting conceptual understanding. Addressing this gap, the study aimed to examine whether virtual laboratory instruction enhances academic achievement in physical sciences to the same extent as traditional laboratory methods. A quasi-experimental design was employed using pre- and post-test achievement scores, and the treatment involved conducting an acid-base titration activity through a virtual laboratory. The participants consisted of two hundred and eleven grade eleven physical science learners selected through random sampling. Data were analysed using independent t-tests and analysis of variance. The findings indicate that the type of experimental environment influences learner performance, yet no meaningful difference was found between virtual and traditional laboratory groups. Both approaches contributed similarly to improved conceptual comprehension. The study implies that virtual laboratories can serve as viable alternatives where conventional facilities are limited, supporting flexible and accessible science instruction. Laboratories are a fundamental aspect of any academic learning that enables students to better understand the theoretical concepts of any academic course. Science, engineering, and medical fields are the main areas of study that heavily depend on laboratories for demonstrating the practicality of any theory. However, circumstances may arise where students face challenges in performing practicals due to insufficient materials, equipment, or the inaccessibility of the laboratory itself. To counter this challenge, various organizations and institutions have come forward to develop ‘Virtual Laboratories' or ‘Virtual Labs'. Virtual laboratories are platforms where the user can engage in practical sessions without the need to be present in person. The user can log in anywhere, even remotely, and be able to gain access to the same setting as in a traditional hands-on laboratory, albeit virtually. This chapter will detail virtual labs, what they are all about, and the effectiveness of virtual labs in comparison to traditional labs.

Sustainable development is an important topic of urban research. The rational use of land resources is of great significance for urban development and is conducive to promoting regional governance and coordinated development. The purpose of this study was to construct an effective evaluation framework for urban land resources to maintain sustainable urban development. Taking the cities along the Jiangsu Section of the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal as the research object, this study constructed an evaluation system for the sustainable use of land resources including the dimensions of economic level, social development, and environmental resources. The statistical data for 2010, 2015, and 2020 were selected to comprehensively calculate and evaluate the level of sustainable use of land resources in the study area via the analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-entropy combined weight method, which combines the analytic hierarchy process and the entropy weight method. According to the research results, the sustainable use of land resources in the study area presented an overall upward trend from 2010 to 2015, and an overall downward trend from 2015 to 2020. Overall, the study area was in a critically sustainable stage, although the annual change rate of the level of sustainable use of land resources showed significant fluctuations and exhibited a spatial pattern of progressive increase from north to south. The cities in southern Jiangsu were in the initially sustainable and basically sustainable stages; those in central Jiangsu were in the critically sustainable and initially sustainable stages; and those in northern Jiangsu were in the unsustainable and critically sustainable stages. This study proposed a scientific and effective evaluation method for cities along the Grand Canal to explore the efficient, sustainable use of land resources in the future. The evaluation framework constructed on this basis can serve as an important reference for urban governance and is expected to guide the sustainable use and development of land resources for other cities of the same type.

Bioeconomy and ethnopharmacology – Translational perspective and sustainability of the bioresources of northeast region of India

Laboratory experiments are considered to be a crucial component of engineering and science curricula by all stakeholders in the education process. In traditional laboratories, students develop practical skills and become effective professionals. However, the major drawbacks of traditional laboratories are their high demand on resources, significant maintenance costs and the inability to delivery the laboratory content in distance education. Virtual laboratory experiments represent a valuable option for educational laboratories, due to their advantages over traditional hands-on as well as remote experiments, including the ease of reconfiguring the experimental system, the high flexibility in the input specifications, the possibility of conducting experiments using devices otherwise infeasible and the option of re-running experiments multiple times.
 In response to the need for developing laboratory resources that provide a practical experience to online engineering students, this paper describes a simulation-based virtual laboratory, which is used at Stevens Institute of Technology (SIT) in a junior-level course on mechanisms and machine dynamics as a compliment to experimental work in the traditional hands-on laboratory. This virtual laboratory system alleviates the space, time and cost constraints associated with traditional laboratories and serves as an efficient teaching aid. It conveys to the students practical issues associated with actual experiments and provides learning outcomes that are comparable to those of traditional physical laboratories. The students have the opportunity to explore a wide range of experimental configurations and parameters. In addition, the system includes a realistic rendering of the experimental setup and its components, thus providing the students with a strong feeling of immersion, as if they were performing an experiment in a traditional laboratory.

Adaptive networks are a versatile approach to model phenomena such as contagion and spreading dynamics, critical transitions and structure formation that emerge from the dynamic coevolution of complex network structure and node states. Here, we study critical transitions in contagion dynamics on multilayer adaptive networks with dynamic node states and present an application to the governance of sustainable resource use. We focus on a three layer adaptive network model, where a polycentric governance network interacts with a social network of resource users which in turn interacts with an ecological network of renewable resources. We uncover that sustainability is favored for slow interaction timescales, large homophilic network adaptation rate (as long it is below the fragmentation threshold) and high taxation rates. Interestingly, we also observe a trade-off between an eco-dictatorship (reduced model with a single governance actor that always taxes unsustainable resource use) and the polycentric governance network of multiple actors. In the latter setup, sustainability is enhanced for low but hindered for high tax rates compared to the eco-dictatorship case. These results highlight mechanisms generating emergent critical transitions in contagion dynamics on multilayer adaptive network and show how these can be understood and approximated analytically, relevant for understanding complex adaptive systems from various disciplines ranging from physics and epidemiology to sociology and global sustainability science. The paper also provides insights into potential critical intervention points for policy in the form of taxes in the governance of sustainable renewable resource use that can inform more process-detailed social-ecological modeling.

This study investigates the development and efficacy of a virtual DC motor laboratory aimed at enhancing practical learning in electrical machines. Key aspects of the literature review emphasize the increasing adoption of digital simulations in education and the effectiveness of virtual labs in technical training. The primary research question is whether the virtual simulator can achieve learning outcomes comparable to traditional physical laboratory tools. Hypotheses posit that students using the virtual DC motor laboratory will demonstrate equivalent learning outcomes compared to those using traditional teaching aids. The study employs a quasi-experimental design following the ADDIE model for development, with a sample size of 32 students—19 in the control group and 13 in the experimental group. Results indicate significant improvements in learning outcomes across both groups, with no statistically significant difference observed between the virtual simulator and traditional methods in post-test assessments. These findings underscore the equivalence of virtual and physical tools in enhancing practical learning in electrical machine practice. Virtual labs offer scalable solutions for educational institutions seeking to modernize their curriculum, crucial in preparing students with relevant skills for the evolving demands of the workforce in electrical engineering and related fields.

Monitoring is an essential component of measuring the performance of protected areas. This requirement led to the development of a biodiversity monitoring system for South African National Parks (SANParks). The system comprises of ten major programmes, each focusing on a core area of conservation biodiversity monitoring, with resource use being one of the focal areas. With the growing appreciation of the importance of natural resources for the socio-economic well-being of communities and other stakeholders, sustainable resource use is an important component of the management of natural areas and national parks. To gauge sustainability, a sound monitoring and research programme that fits within the context of the SANParks’ adaptive management approach towards social-ecological system management is required. The purpose of this article was to define the context and scope in which consumptive resource use takes place within SANParks and to outline the criteria necessary for developing a sound monitoring programme to assess the sustainability of such use. The monitoring programme is structured in view of the fact that sustainable resource use is achievable only where all dimensions of sustainability (social, economic and ecological) are considered simultaneously. In terms of the social and economic dimensions of sustainability, the programme provides for assessing stakeholder needs, trends in resource use and the social and economic impacts of resource use. Monitoring that relates to the ecological dimension of sustainability of biological resource use deals with the rate of turnover and population dynamics of target species, as well as harvest impact. In terms of abiotic (non-renewable) resources, monitoring deals with sound management practices to minimise impact on the environment, and to optimise benefits through responsible use.Conservation implications: The resource use monitoring programme is intended to ensure that monitoring relating to the harvesting of natural resources from national parks is scientifically sound and conducted in a structured way, towards meeting the objective of sustainable use and compliance with national legislation. The article illustrates how SANParks meets its obligation to monitor biodiversity conservation while at the same time meeting the needs for the consumptive use of resources.

Laboratory experimentation in the context of school science is a widely advocated teaching strategy for the simplification of several abstract scientific concepts. Laboratory-based learning activities have proven to enhance learners’ conceptual and procedural understandings of micro chemical phenomena, thus boosting achievement in chemistry content tests. In the South African education landscape where there is inequitable distribution of resources for laboratory-based science learning, this study exploited how available virtual learning resources could also be used for learning chemistry concepts, and further compared student achievement in chemistry content test post intervention with both traditional and virtual laboratory learning resources. In this quasi- experimental study, we provided a group of third-year pre-service science teachers (n=50) with four chemistry concepts to learn using a hands-on traditional (control group) and a virtual laboratory (experimental group) intervention. The same pre and post chemistry content test was administered to control and experimental groups of pre-service teachers (herein also referred to as students), before and after learning interventions, with the aim of assessing students’ achievements post- learning in the two different laboratory environments. Tests scores were analysed and the results of a paired-sample t-test showed a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-test results for all groups of students. Using independent sample t-tests, we further compared post-test scores for the control and experimental groups which revealed the mean post-test score of the experimental group (M = 79.36, SD = 8.306), being significantly higher than that of the control group (M = 68.72, SD = 9.076) at t (48) = 4.32, p < .01. The findings from these tests indicated that, students obtained significantly higher achievement scores post- laboratory learning interventions and that virtual laboratory interventions yielded significantly higher achievement scores than traditional laboratory interventions. Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that, laboratory learning has a positive impact on achievement in chemistry and that virtual laboratories provide a worthy complement for traditional laboratories when learning abstract and difficult chemistry concepts. Implications of these findings and some recommendations for practice and research are also discussed herein.

Virtual practical lab powered by AI – enhance Virtual Practical labs provide impressive, interactive ,and personalized learning experience, enabling students to conduct experiments in simulated environment that conduct mimic real- world scenarios .Furthermore, we discuss ethical considerations, technological advancements, and case studies of AI-based virtual labs in science, engineering, and medical education. It’s impact on modern education, and the challenges associated with the implementation. The research concludes with recommendations for optimizing AI in virtual practical labs for enhanced pedagogical outcomes.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education witnessed a paradigm shift in the teaching-learning strategies everywhere from the original way where everything was largely conducted face-to-face. Teachers, educators, and students had to suddenly move to the virtual mode to continue their classes in schools, institutes, and universities. Recently, many published studies have revealed the utmost need to improve teaching strategies, particularly in an online lecture setting. However, the major impediment was observed in higher educational institutions (HEIs) where teachers had to conduct laboratory experiments in hard sciences, particularly in physics, chemistry and, biochemistry. Of these subjects taught in graduate classes, chemistry is a complex subject. A chemistry learner needs to acquire hands-on experience, especially when performing organic preparations and instrumental analyses. Chemistry teachers believed that nothing could ever replace a traditional laboratory setting, but now the situation has changed to a certain extent. It has always been argued that students do not learn by merely clicking on simulated glassware and instruments. In a typical organic chemistry laboratory, students prepare organic compounds, purify them, and determine various properties of the pure compounds. Students gain experience by trial-error while adding reagents in organic preparation, devising reaction mechanisms, observing the physical properties of purified compounds, and even separating complex mixtures. Virtual laboratories cannot replace all these with a mere simulator, but when one deals with corrosive chemicals and advanced instrumental methods, it seems a plausible solution to augment them with traditional laboratories. It was found that using advanced level of online screen experiments improved students understanding and also helped them score well in their laboratory assessments. Virtual simulations cannot replace traditional laboratories since many experiments require hands-on tool abilities, smelling, seeing colored complexes, and trial-error strategies. It was also observed that experiments that require costly instruments can be carried as a remote trigger, paving the way to augment virtual experiments in the future chemistry laboratory. The chapter discusses the pedagogical design for graduate students in a virtual chemistry laboratory and live demonstrations performed in the traditional laboratory. In this chapter chemistry experiments based on organic synthesis, stereochemistry and spectroscopy on a virtual screen have been studied. The different modalities of conducting virtual screen experiments, assessment strategies, and government initiatives are also highlighted. This chapter concludes with current and future trends of virtual chemistry laboratories with highlights on the barriers, opportunities, and key measures to resolve them.

China-Africa development cooperation in the rural sector has received an increased attention by researchers and policy-makers given the advantages and disadvantages of China’s contribution to the local economy. However, there is a lack of more reliable and nuanced findings to provide greater insights into the major issues concerning rural development and resource use. This paper aims to position land tenure and foreign investments linkages as a new research angle for understanding the role of land in sustainable resource use and investments. The paper provides a brief overview of China-Africa cooperation in rural development especially concerning agriculture to illustrate the neglect of critical land and resource use issues in policy and practice. The paper briefly discusses the ongoing land tenure reforms in Africa and the policy gaps to be filled through further research. It also discusses how China’s own development model, especially concerning land tenure reform, shares similar trajectories with Africa, which has important implications for the effectiveness of Chinese investments in African land. The paper concludes that there is an urgent need for lesson learning among Chinese and African policy-makers and investors towards tailoring development cooperation to more appropriate land tenure systems for sustainable resource use to the mutual benefit of Chinese and African stakeholders.
