Visualization and Visual Analysis of Ensemble Data: A Survey.

Visual text analytics has recently emerged as one of the most prominent topics in both academic research and the commercial world. To provide an overview of the relevant techniques and analysis tasks, as well as the relationships between them, we comprehensively analyzed 263 visualization papers and 4,346 mining papers published between 1992-2017 in two fields: visualization and text mining. From the analysis, we derived around 300 concepts (visualization techniques, mining techniques, and analysis tasks) and built a taxonomy for each type of concept. The co-occurrence relationships between the concepts were also extracted. Our research can be used as a stepping-stone for other researchers to 1) understand a common set of concepts used in this research topic; 2) facilitate the exploration of the relationships between visualization techniques, mining techniques, and analysis tasks; 3) understand the current practice in developing visual text analytics tools; 4) seek potential research opportunities by narrowing the gulf between visualization and mining techniques based on the analysis tasks; and 5) analyze other interdisciplinary research areas in a similar way. We have also contributed a web-based visualization tool for analyzing and understanding research trends and opportunities in visual text analytics.

Abstract2D Confocal Raman Microscopy (CRM) data consist of high dimensional per‐pixel spectral data of 1000 bands and allows for complex spectral and spatial‐spectral analysis tasks, i.e., in material discrimination, material thickness, and spatial material distributions. Currently, simple integral methods are commonly applied as visual analysis solutions to CRM data which exhibit restricted discrimination power in various regards.In this paper we present a novel approach for the visual analysis of 2D multispectral CRM data using multi‐variate visualization techniques. Due to the large amount of data and the demand of an explorative approach without a‐priori restriction, our system allows for arbitrary interactive (de)selection of varaibles w/o limitation and an unrestricted online definition/construction of new, combined properties. Our approach integrates CRM specific quantitative measures and handles material‐related features for mixed materials in a quantitative manner. Technically, we realize the online definition/construction of new, combined properties as semi‐automatic, cascaded, 1D and 2D multidimensional transfer functions (MD‐TFs). By interactively incorporating new (raw or derived) properties, the dimensionality of the MD‐TF space grows during the exploration procedure and is virtually unlimited. The final visualization is achieved by an enhanced color mixing step which improves saturation and contrast.

Network security analysis and ensemble data visualization are two active research areas. Although they are treated as separate domains, they share many common challenges and characteristics. Both focus on scalability, time-dependent data analytics, and exploration of patterns and unusual behaviors in large datasets. These overlaps provide an opportunity to apply ensemble visualization research to improve network security analysis. To study this goal, we propose methods to interpret network security alerts and flow traffic as ensemble members. We can then apply ensemble visualization techniques in a network analysis environment to produce a network ensemble visualization system. Including ensemble representations provide new, in-depth insights into relationships between alerts and flow traffic. Analysts can cluster traffic with similar behavior and identify traffic with unusual patterns, something that is difficult to achieve with high-level overviews of large network datasets. Furthermore, our ensemble approach facilitates analysis of relationships between alerts and flow traffic, improves scalability, maintains accessibility and configurability, and is designed to fit our analysts’ working environment, mental models, and problem solving strategies.

The curse of dimensionality, i.e., the fact that feature spaces of increasing dimensionality with finite sample sizes tend to be empty, has given incentive to a plethora of research activities in various disciplines and diverse application fields, e.g., statistics or neural networks. Three major application fields are multivariate data classification, data analysis and data visualization. In this contribution, methods for dimensionality reduction from three decades of interdisciplinary research are browsed and their applicability in the above application domains is briefly discussed. Complementing techniques for ensuing interactive data visualization, data navigation and visual exploratory data analysis are presented, which exploit the remarkable human perceptive and associative capabilities for interactive visual exploratory data analysis and systematic recognition system design. The main focus of this paper is on the comparison of feature selection and feature extraction techniques and the potential benefit of their combination. Further, the interesting implications of dimensionality reduction for VLSI design and related area and power consumption are pointed out.

The widespread use of computational simulation in science and engineering provides challenging research opportunities. Multiple independent variables are considered and large and complex data are computed, especially in the case of multi-run simulation. Classical visualization techniques deal well with 2D or 3D data and also with time-dependent data. Additional independent dimensions, however, provide interesting new challenges. We present an advanced visual analysis approach that enables a thorough investigation of families of data surfaces, i.e., datasets, with respect to pairs of independent dimensions. While it is almost trivial to visualize one such data surface, the visual exploration and analysis of many such data surfaces is a grand challenge, stressing the users' perception and cognition. We propose an approach that integrates projections and aggregations of the data surfaces at different levels (one scalar aggregate per surface, a 1D profile per surface, or the surface as such). We demonstrate the necessity for a flexible visual analysis system that integrates many different (linked) views for making sense of this highly complex data. To demonstrate its usefulness, we exemplify our approach in the context of a meteorological multi-run simulation data case and in the context of the engineering domain, where our collaborators are working with the simulation of elastohydrodynamic (EHD) lubrication bearing in the automotive industry.

Business analytics involves using various technologies to analyze data. Data mining focuses on the automated search for knowledge, patterns, or regularities in data. As a business analyst, it is essential to recognize the type of analytical technique appropriate for solving a specific problem. Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) describes data using statistical and visualization techniques to highlight important aspects of that data for further analysis. This involves examining a data set from many angles, describing it, and summarizing it without making assumptions about its content. Exploratory data analysis is an essential step before diving into statistical modeling or machine learning to ensure that the data is really what it claims to be and that there are no apparent errors. This type of analysis should be part of data science projects in every organization. Visual analytics is sometimes confused with data visualization. Visual analysis is not simply a matter of graphically representing data. Modern, interactive visual analytics makes combining data from multiple sources easy and performs in-depth data analysis directly in the visualization. Additionally, artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms can offer recommendations for exploration. Ultimately, visual analytics helps transform massive data sets into business insights that can positively impact an organization. Considering the previous comment about visual data analysis, it should be added that the system has extensive capabilities to create graphical dashboards containing reports and charts. It is essential that in the case of desktops, in addition to the visualizations included in the system itself, it is possible to embed reports from third-party tools.

Trends in gut-heart axis and heart failure research (1993–2023): A bibliometric and visual analysis

The impact of the weather on the flight duration of aircraft has been analyzed in various studies. The complex aspects of the weather, which are accordingly reflected in the weather data, demand sophisticated techniques to visualize the data as well as analytical results of data analysis methods. In this paper we discuss several modern techniques for data visualization and their application in air traffic management.

Comparison is a core task in visual analysis. Although there are numerous guidelines to help users design effective visualizations to aid known comparison tasks, there are few techniques available when users want to make ad hoc comparisons between marks, trends, or charts during data exploration and visual analysis. For instance, to compare voting count maps from different years, two stock trends in a line chart, or a scatterplot of country GDPs with a textual summary of the average GDP. Ideally, users can directly select the comparison targets and compare them, however what elements of a visualization should be candidate targets, which combinations of targets are safe to compare, and what comparison operations make sense? This article proposes a conceptual model that lets users compose combinations of values, marks, legend elements, and charts using a set of composition operators that summarize, compute differences, merge, and model their operands. We further define a View Composition Algebra (VCA) that is compatible with datacube-based visualizations, derive an interaction design based on this algebra that supports ad hoc visual comparisons, and illustrate its utility through several use cases.

Optical illusions from visual data analysis: Example of the New Zealand asthma mortality epidemic

Clinical research hotspots and trends of atherosclerosis treatment with traditional Chinese medicine preparations

Depression is one of the common mental illnesses. Because it is an important complication of diabetes, its association with changes in insulin levels and insulin resistance, the causative factors of diabetes, has attracted widespread attention. However, the association between insulin and depression has not been systematically studied through bibliometric and visual analysis. This study is based on 3131 publications of Web of Science to identify the current research status and research trends in this field. The results show that since 2010, the number of publications has been growing rapidly. Cooperative network analysis shows that the United States, the University of Toronto and Roger S Mcintyre are the most influential countries, research institutes and scholars, respectively. Insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic syndrome are hot topics in this field. Analysis of keywords and references reveals that “sex hormones,” is new research area that constantly emerging. As far as we know, this study is the first one to visualize the association between depression and insulin and predict potential future research trends through bibliometric and visual analysis.

BackgroundDiabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease, with an increasing prevalence worldwide, but its pathomechanisms remain incompletely understood. Accumulating evidence suggests that immunity plays an important role in the development of DN. Many papers have been published in the field over the last 20 years, but there has been no bibliometric review of the research hotspots and trends in the field. This study aimed to assess the current research status and future trends of the link between immune and DN using bibliometric analysis.MethodsPublications on the association between immunity and DN from 2004 to 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database and screened according to inclusion criteria. VOSviewer and CiteSpace software were employed to visualize research trends and hotspots in the field. Data including author, institution, country, journal, reference, and keyword were analyzed.ResultsUltimately 1246 publications meeting the criteria were included in the bibliometric analysis, involving 838 articles (84.96%) and 408 reviews (15.04%). The literature covered 81 countries and regions, 1751 institutions, and 6584 authors. The top 2 countries in terms of the number of publications were China (435) and the United States (318), and they collaborated most frequently. The United States had the highest number of citations for published papers (18,161), far exceeding the other countries. England had 38 publications but had the highest average number of citations (92.32). The University of California system was the most prolific institution (25 papers, 1062 citations, 42.48 citations per paper). Frontiers in Immunology was the most prolific journal in the field (30 papers). The most cited journal was Kidney International (863 citations). The analysis of keywords and references showed that inflammation, ferroptosis, and lipid metabolism may be future research hotspots in this field.ConclusionsThe number of publications related to immunity and DN has increased annually over the past 20 years, with a significant increase in the last 3 years especially. Our results identified research hotspots and trends in the field. These findings provide valuable perspectives for future research, enhancing our understanding of the immune-related mechanisms of DN and exploring potential therapeutic strategies.

Visual analysis and data delivery in the form of visualizations are of great importance in health care, as such forms of presentation can reduce errors and improve care and can also help provide new insights into long-term disease progression. Information visualization and visual analytics also address the complexity of long-term, time-oriented patient data by reducing inherent complexity and facilitating a focus on underlying and hidden patterns. This review aims to provide an overview of visualization techniques for time-oriented data in health care, supporting the comparison of patients. We systematically collected literature and report on the visualization techniques supporting the comparison of time-based data sets of single patients with those of multiple patients or their cohorts and summarized the use of these techniques. This scoping review used the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist. After all collected articles were screened by 16 reviewers according to the criteria, 6 reviewers extracted the set of variables under investigation. The characteristics of these variables were based on existing taxonomies or identified through open coding. Of the 249 screened articles, we identified 22 (8.8%) that fit all criteria and reviewed them in depth. We collected and synthesized findings from these articles for medical aspects such as medical context, medical objective, and medical data type, as well as for the core investigated aspects of visualization techniques, interaction techniques, and supported tasks. The extracted articles were published between 2003 and 2019 and were mostly situated in clinical research. These systems used a wide range of visualization techniques, most frequently showing changes over time. Timelines and temporal line charts occurred 8 times each, followed by histograms with 7 occurrences and scatterplots with 5 occurrences. We report on the findings quantitatively through visual summarization, as well as qualitatively. The articles under review in general mitigated complexity through visualization and supported diverse medical objectives. We identified 3 distinct patient entities: single patients, multiple patients, and cohorts. Cohorts were typically visualized in condensed form, either through prior data aggregation or through visual summarization, whereas visualization of individual patients often contained finer details. All the systems provided mechanisms for viewing and comparing patient data. However, explicitly comparing a single patient with multiple patients or a cohort was supported only by a few systems. These systems mainly use basic visualization techniques, with some using novel visualizations tailored to a specific task. Overall, we found the visual comparison of measurements between single and multiple patients or cohorts to be underdeveloped, and we argue for further research in a systematic review, as well as the usefulness of a design space.
