Web Applications with Spring Boot

Nowadays the web is the main channel for any type of application—from desktop to mobile devices, from social and business applications to games, and from simple content to streaming data. With this is mind, Spring Boot can help you easily develop the next generation of web applications.

Research and commercial interest toward 3D virtual worlds are recently growing because they probably represent the new direction for the next generation of web applications. Although these environments present several features that are useful for informal collaboration, structured collaboration is required to effectively use them in a working or in a didactical setting. This paper presents a system supporting synchronous collaborative learning by naturally enriching Learning Management System services with meeting management and multimedia features. Monitoring and moderation of discussions are also managed at a single group and at the teaching level. The Second Life (SL) environment has been integrated with twoad hocdeveloped Moodle plug‐ins and SL objects have been designed, modeled, and programmed to support synchronous role‐based collaborative activities. We also enriched SL with tools to support the capturing and displaying of textual information during collaborative sessions for successive retrieval. In addition, the multimedia support has been enhanced with functionalities for navigating multimedia contents. We also report on an empirical study aiming at evaluating the use of the proposed SL collaborative learning as compared with face‐to‐face group collaboration. Results show that the two approaches are statistically undistinguishable in terms of performance, comfort with communication, and overall satisfaction. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Web Services (WS) can be considered as the most influent enabling technology for the next generation of web applications. WS‐based application providers will face challenging features related to nonfunctional properties in general and to performance and QoS in particular. Moreover, WS‐based developers have to provide solutions to extend such applications with self‐healing (SH) mechanisms as required for autonomic computing to face the complexity of interactions and to improve availability. Such solutions should be applicable when the components implementing SH mechanisms are deployed on both or only one platform on the WS providers and requesters sides depending on the deployment constraints. Associating application‐specific performance requirements and monitoring‐specific constraints will lead to complex configurations where fine tuning is needed to provide SH solutions. To contribute to enhancing the design and the assessment of such solutions for WS technology, we designed and implemented a monitoring and measurement framework, which is part of a larger Self‐Healing Architectures (SHA) developed during the European WS‐DIAMOND project. We implemented the Conference Management System (CMS), a real WS‐based complex application. We achieved a large‐scale experimentation campaign by deploying CMS on top of SHA on the French grid Grid5000. We experienced the problem as if we were a service provider who has to tune reconfiguration strategies. Our results are available on the web in a structured database for external use by the WS community. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Spring MVC is the most popular Java web framework based on the Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern. Since the Spring 3.0 version, Spring MVC has provided annotation based request mapping capabilities using @Controller and @RequestMapping. But configuring Spring MVC web application components such as DispatcherServlet, ViewResolvers, MultiPartResolver, and ExceptionHandlers is a repetitive and tedious process.

The emergence of e-commerce and the growth of the amount of available content creates an overload of large volumes of information. At the same time, recommender systems, being powerful data filtering tools and using a variety of algorithms and analysis methods, reduce this overload by generating the most relevant elements for a particular user, which contributes to more effective and efficient selection decisions. The article discusses the main types and methods of recommender systems, methods for calculating the similarity coefficient of users and elements, metrics for evaluating the quality of work of recommender systems. The main problems of recommender systems are highlighted. The means of development of the client and server part of the system of recommendations for the web application of finding the optimal configuration of network equipment are considered, such as: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Spring, Spring Boot, Spring Data JPA, Spring Security, Thymeleaf, MySQL. The architecture of a recommender system web application built using these tools is described.

From the Semantic Web to social machines: A research challenge for AI on the World Wide Web

The Semantic Web enables the dissemination of data on the Internet through a common format in order to integrate or combine databases from different sources. The National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) has several collections of data, mainly scientific, that can be disclosed and used in the research and development of the Amazon as well as for the advancement of science. The objective of this study is to investigate how the use of Semantic Web technologies, among them the tool Rexplorator, can improve the research process by processing the semantics in collections of biological data. Use cases are developed with input from INPA researchers. Queries are constructed based on RDFS (Resource Description Framework Schema) created for INPA's existing collections. Use cases can be reused by other researchers, including researchers from different fields. In this process of reuse, the customization and collaborative development of use cases is possible. The result of this process is the generation of Web applications that abstract the RDF model on which data are represented.

The new generation of Web applications known as (STS) is successfully established and poised for continued growth. STS are open and inherently social; features that have been proven to encourage participation. But while STS bring new opportunities, they revive old problems, such as information overload. Recommender Systems are well known applications for increasing the level of relevant content over the “noise” that continuously grows as more and more content becomes available online. In STS however, we face new challenges. Users are interested in finding not only content, but also tags and even other users. Moreover, while traditional recommender systems usually operate over 2-way data arrays, STS data is represented as a third-order tensor or a hypergraph with hyperedges denoting (user, resource, tag) triples. In this chapter, we survey the most recent and state-of-the-art work about a whole new generation of recommender systems built to serve STS.We describe (a) novel facets of recommenders for STS, such as user, resource, and tag recommenders, (b) new approaches and algorithms for dealing with the ternary nature of STS data, and (c) recommender systems deployed in real world STS. Moreover, a concise comparison between existing works is presented, through which we identify and point out new research directions.

As modern web applications continue to evolve, secure and scalable APIs have become essential building blocks for dynamic, data-driven platforms. Java Spring Boot, renowned for its developer-friendly approach and extensive ecosystem serves as a common foundation for implementing microservice APIs. Two prominent architectural styles, RESTful and GraphQL, each offer distinct approaches to request handling, data fetching, and schema management in a microservices or distributed environment. This paper presents an extensive study of REST vs. GraphQL for developing secure and scalable APIs in Spring Boot, focusing on performance, data modeling, ease of adoption, and real-world pitfalls. We examine security best practices covering authentication, authorization, and data encryption while highlighting scaling techniques such as load balancing, container orchestration, and caching. Through diagrams, code snippets, and references to real-world scenarios, we provide a practical guide for architects and developers aiming to choose the right approach. In doing so, we also discuss known anti-patterns that undermine security or hamper throughput, and propose best practices to ensure robust, future-proof APIs. To help developing continuous improvement in Information and Communication Technology, new software are required with functionality and characteristics different from the traditional one. Thus, measurement procedures need to be tailored to this new computing context. In fact, the software functional size is one of the important cost drivers of software development projects. An accurate measurement needs a detailed definition of software requirements and may require an important measurement effort. However, this is not always available. Thus, well defined measurement procedures requiring little effort and providing approximate or rapid measurement results are needed. The COSMIC Functional Size Measurement (FSM) method has knew a great success compared to other methods since it addresses different types of software including business application, apps, etc. Moreover, it has been successfully used with UML diagrams for different objectives. In this paper, a Use Case based measurement procedure is proposed in order to estimate the functional size of mobile and web applications using COSMIC FSM method. The proposed procedure helps both beginners and experienced measurer in applying COSMIC and avoiding measurement errors. It is based on a set of measurement formulas tested and validated through the case study Restaurant Management System.

From the Publisher: Programming the Web with Visual Basic .NET is a comprehensive guide to building Web applications and services using Visual Basic .NET. It is designed especially for experienced Visual Basic programmers who use Visual Studio .NET for their development work. The authors do not assume that readers know how to program Web applications. Because the .NET Framework simply blows away the archaic tools previously available to Web programmers, the authors predict that many Visual Basic programmers who successfully avoided Web programming in the past will now bring their expertise to the Web. Yet, experienced Web programmers will also benefit from the authors' thorough coverage of the ASP.NET namespaces and their clear coverage of the ADO.NET classes most important to Web applications that use relational databases for data storage. All developers will benefit from the authors' extensive practical advice (based on their unique professional backgrounds) about how to produce high quality code and how to design professional quality, usable Web pages. After reading Programming the Web with Visual Basic .NET, developers will understand how to build and deploy top quality, professionally designed, highly usable Web applications using Visual Basic .NET. The three co-authors of this book are related in both life and business. Constance Petersen and her husband, Lynn Torkelson, are the founders of SoftMedia Artisans, Inc. The third author is their fourteen-year-old son Zachary Torkelson. Lynn, a grizzled veteran of assembly language and C programming, has extensive experience using Visual Basic to develop client-server business applications. Before ditching the corporate world to go into business with Constance, Lynn also did tours of duty as a software development manager and as a manager of software quality. Constance co-authored the best-selling Visual Basic 4 How-To and has been recognized with the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award for her contributions to the VB development community. The creative force within SoftMedia Artisans, she has written extensively on Web design and usability. Zac began investigating the joys of programming at the age of ten and gradually intensified his interest. He soon learned VB5, then VB6, and C++. After discovering the works of Dan Appleman on the company shelves, Zac began using the Windows API extensively in his programs. Upon the arrival of the first .NET Beta, Zac switched to Visual Basic .NET and C#. These days he particularly likes to program multiplayer online games with cool graphics and sound. - Authors speak directly to experienced Visual Basic programmers who want to use Visual Basic .NET to program Web applications - Provides thorough coverage of the ASP.NET namespaces - Includes much practical advice about how to produce high quality code and how to design professional quality, usable Web pages—thanks to Authors' unique professional backgrounds ? Authors will maintain an ongoing Web site in support of the book (updated source code, errata, additional tips, articles, examples, etc.)

Web usage mining techniques and applications across industries is still exploratory and, despite an increase in academic research, there are challenge of analyze web which quantitatively capture web users' common interests and characterize their underlying tasks. This chapter addresses the problem of how to support web usage mining techniques and applications across industries by combining language of web pages and algorithms that used in web data mining. Existing research in web usage mining techniques tend to focus on finding out how each techniques can apply in different industries fields. However, there is little evidence that researchers have approached the issue of web usage mining across industries. Consequently, the aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of how the web usage mining techniques and applications across industries can be supported.

Traditional decision support systems (DSS) and executive information systems (EIS) gather and present information from several sources for business purposes. It is an information technology to help the knowledge worker (executive, manager, analyst) make faster and better decisions. So far, these data were stored statically and persistently in a database, typically in a data warehouse. Data warehouses collect masses of operational data, allowing analysts to extract information by issuing decision support queries on the otherwise discarded data. In a typical scenario, an organization stores a detailed record of its operations in a database, which is then analyzed to improve efficiency, detect sales opportunities, and so on. Performing complex analysis on these data is an essential component of these organizations’ businesses. Chaudhuri and Dayal (1997) present an excellent survey on decision-making and online analytical processing (OLAP) technologies for traditional database systems. ?n many applications however, it may not be possible to process queries within a database management system (DBMS). These applications involve data items that arrive online from multiple sources in a continuous, rapid and time-varying fashion (Babcock et. al., 2002). These data may or may not be stored in a database. As a result, a new class of data-intensive applications has recently attracted a lot of attention: applications in which the data is modeled not as persistent relations but rather as transient data streams. Examples include financial applications (streams of transactions or ticks), network monitoring (stream of packets), security, telecommunication data management (stream of calls or call packets), web applications (clickstreams), manufacturing, wireless sensor networks (measurements), RFID data, and others. In data streams we usually have “continuous” queries (Terry et. al., 1992; Babu & Widom, 2002) rather than “one-time.” The answer to a continuous query is produced over time, reflecting the stream data seen so far. Answers may be stored and updated as new data arrives or may be produced as data streams themselves. Continuous queries can be used for monitoring, alerting, security, personalization, etc. Data streams can be either transactional (i.e., log interactions between entities, such as credit card purchases, web clickstreams, phone calls), or measurement (i.e., monitor evolution of entity states, such as physical phenomena, road traffic, temperature, network). How to best model, express and evaluate complex queries over data streams is an open and difficult problem. This involves data modeling, rich querying capabilities to support real-time decision support and mining, and novel evaluation and optimization processing techniques. In addition, the kind of decision support over data streams is quite different from “traditional” decision-making: decisions are “tactical” rather than “strategic.” Research on data streams is currently among the most active areas in database research community. Flexible and efficient stream querying will be a crucial component of any future data management and decision support system (Abiteboul et al., 2005).

Web applications represent an important category of applications that owe much of their popularity to the ubiquitous accessibility using standard web browsers. The complexity of web applications is steadily increasing since the inception of the Internet and the way it is perceived changes from a pure information source to a platform for applications. Many different web frameworks exist that support recurring and tedious development tasks in order to simplify the process of building web applications. Most of the currently available web frameworks adhere to the widely accepted Model 2 design pattern that targets a clean separation of model, view and controller parts of an application in the sense of MVC. Nevertheless, existing frameworks are conceived to work with standard object-oriented business applications only and do not respect the particularities and possibilities of agent applications. Hence, in this paper a new architecture, in accordance with the Model 2 design pattern, is proposed that is able to combine the strengths of agent-based computing with web interactions. This architecture is the basis for the Jadex Webbridge framework, which enables a seamless integration of the Jadex BDI framework with state-of-the art JSP technology. The usage of web technology in combination with agents is further exemplified by an electronic bookstore case study.

While basic Web analytics tools are widespread and provide statistics about website navigation, no approaches exist for merging such statistics with information about the Web application structure, content and semantics. Current analytics tools only analyze the user interaction at page level in terms of page views, entry and landing page, page views per visit, and so on. We show the advantages of combining Web application models with runtime navigation logs, at the purpose of deepening the understanding of users behaviour. We propose a model-driven approach that combines user interaction modeling (based on the IFML standard), full code generation of the designed application, user tracking at runtime through logging of runtime component execution and user activities, integration with page content details, generation of integrated schema-less data streams, and application of large-scale analytics and visualization tools for big data, by applying both traditional data visualization techniques and direct representation of statistics on visual models of the Web application.
