Empower service directories with knowledge
Web service technology (WST) is a service-oriented architecture implementation framework that makes designing component-based internet applications possible. At present, many providers offer their services as web services. Current WST suffers from the lack of an integrated tool to assist web service developers. In WST, the services are published publicly, and their descriptions are stored in service directories. These descriptions contain valuable information about the work of different software teams throughout the world. However, with the increasing number of web services, searching for services is difficult and time-consuming. Furthermore, in current service directories, there is a little knowledge about the services, and extraction of useful information to be utilised by developers is not easy. In this paper, in order to increase the knowledge of what is available in service directories, a structure is presented by interlinking WST entities by using some defined semantic relations. The proposed structure provides a framework and a tool named WSDATool to develop new web services using information from published services or to refine current published web service descriptions. In experiments, services designed with the assistance of the WSDATool are more coherent and well designed.

MLSF: A Framework for Multi-Level Secure Composite Web Services
Web services technologies change the software industry drastically by developing and integrating enterprise web services and applications in order to enable the users to access them. There are several research initiatives in the field of Web services for enterprise applications. However, none of the initiatives have attempted for web applications pertaining to academic institution using Web services technology. Web service composition is the combination of web services from different service providers to create a more sophisticated, value added web service to the web users. Researchers put on efforts to bring out the state-of-the art in web services technologies and security technologies for web services. The composition of web services is another promising area for research and development. A study reveals that there are number of approaches providing secure web services. However, there is no attempt made so far to secure the services at multi-level. This paper proposes a Multi-level Secured Framework (MLSF) for the students, faculty and employees of the academic institutions which provides secured composite web services such as admission service, fees payment service, library service, personalized service and so on. The MLSF enhances the security at various levels such as user level, device level, web services level and institution level.

Web service technologies are becoming increasingly important for integrating systems and services. There is much activity and interest around standardization and usage of Web service technologies. Contemporary Web services are described in the Web Service Description Language (WSDL). However, WSDL documents can be difficult to understand for service developers. This article recommends a model-driven process for Web service development combining the graphical modeling language UML with WSDL. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is developed by Object Management Group. In the proposed process, Web service descriptions (in WDSL) are converted to UML; their UML models are integrated to form composite Web services; and then the new Web service descriptions are exported. The main contribution of this article is a “pure UML” modeling strategy supported by implementation of two-way conversion rules between the UML models and the WSDL documents.

Read moreModeling the Measurements of QoS Requirements in Web Service Systems
The new technology of Web services is beginning to impact the global business approaches and trends in which the services are being offered and consumed. The advancement of Web services and its wide spread use require that its quality of service (QoS) components to be highly dependable and robust. It is clear that one of the major inevitable challenges facing the business organizations today is to provide adequate QoS aspects for Web services. This paper gathers together the various techniques that can be used for measuring and optimizing the major QoS requirements for Web services proposed by the World Wide Consortium (W3C), while presenting a methodology to build QoS-aware Web services. A software model was designed and implemented to test a Web service and perform the experiments to quantitatively measure the QoS requirements involved in a Web service. Various modeling tests and experiments were designed and conducted to illustrate the proposed QoS measurement metrics. The techniques discussed in this paper can be incorporated into the planning, design, implementation, deployment, operational and maintenance phases during a Web service development lifecycle.

QoS Based Pricing for Web Services
Web Services technologies have over a period of time replaced expensive EDI links and have come to stay as the backbone for collaboration between various enterprises. While currently majority of Web Services are available free, over a period of time increased business dependencies of customers on Web Services are resulting in demands for better Quality of Service. Investments in newer technologies to improve Quality of Service results in increasing Cost of Service, which needs to be offset by revenues. While service providers seek predictability in revenues, customers and users of the Web Services seek flexibility in pricing by not being charged for services not used and service features that are not provided. QoS thus becomes a key determinant of pricing in Web Services. This paper attempts to define a framework for pricing Web Services based on the QoS features provided, the underlying Cost of Service and the level of predictability of revenues that accrue to the service provider based on the transaction volumes of various services. The proposed framework suggests a Subscription-based Pricing for Commoditized Web Services, Transaction-based Pricing for Channelized Web Services and Risk-Based Pricing for Customized Web Services.

Read moreA novel framework for bindings synchronization of Web services
Over the last decade, Web services technology has emerged as a promising solution to address interoperability problems that prevent distributed software systems from being integrated with one another. Accordingly, an increasing number of Web services have been deployed over the Internet to overcome limitations of existing integration models. Typically to use Web services, service providers publish in service registries information about their Web services including the service qualities and bindings that the service consumers use to select first and then to bind to Web services they need. However, as Web services increase in number, the number of service registries holding this information is also increased raising the challenge of how to synchronize such information over these registries since it may change over time. To address the above challenge, we first review in this paper an example of a decentralized architecture of service repositories that highlights the need to synchronize Web service information, especially service bindings, and then, we propose an agent-based synchronization model to meet this need. Finally, an experimental study is conducted to evaluate the performance of our proposal.

Read moreBuilding Reliable Web Services Compositions
The recent evolution of internet technologies, mainly guided by the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and its related technologies, are extending the role of the World Wide Web from information interaction to service interaction. This next wave of the internet era is being driven by a concept named Web services. The Web services technology provides the underpinning to a new business opportunity, i.e., the possibility of providing value-added Web services. However, the building of value-added services on this new environment is not a trivial task. Due to the many singularities of the Web service environment, such as the inherent structural and behavioral heterogeneity of Web services, as well as their strict autonomy, it is not possible to rely on the current models and solutions to build and coordinate compositions of Web services. In this paper, we present a framework for building reliable Web service compositions on top of heterogeneous and autonomous Web services.
