PurposeThis article shows that business family and family business research is dominated by reductionist and biased concepts of culture that are in sharp contrast with recent advances in anthropology and the broader social sciences that would allow for more fine-grained analyses.Design/methodology/approachThrough an inbound theorizing approach, state-of-the-art anthropological and sociological concepts of culture are introduced to family business research.FindingsThe resulting interdisciplinary update unveils that prevailing concepts of culture in family business research confuse cultures with countries or nations and neglect the processual constitution of culture.Originality/valueThe article advocates a research agenda emphasizing the social construction and reproduction of culture as well as the need to systematically draw on findings from anthropology and sociology so as to allow for better cross-cultural comparisons in the field of family business research.

This paper argues that, given the proliferation of journals within which to publish international business research, authors need to identify objectives for their research and develop a publishing strategy to ensure the appropriate and timely publication of their work. Based on archival data and a survey of journal editors, this study provides information about seventy-nine English language business publications to help authors develop such as strategy.

<p>The present study is citation analysis of Business Research. It covers 18 issues of 9 volumes of Business Research published bi-annually during the period 2008-2016. The analysis covers the study of citation pattern and chronological growth citations. It also covers authorship pattern of the articles and various information sources of cited material. On the basis of citation analysis, a rank list of journals is prepared and core journals in the field of Business research are identified. Similarly, core areas of research are identified. The study reveals that researchers have cited journals (77.33%) more than books, editorial works and all other sources of information. Growth in collaborative trend of writing papers is also noticed as citations contributed by two authors is (37.67%) and single authors is (33.42%) followed by three authors (21.59%). Half-life of journal’s citations is found to be fourteen years. Bradford’s law doesn’t found fit in the study. Academy of Management Journal (157 citations), Strategic Management Journal (141 citations) and The Journal of Finance (136 citations) are the most cited journals. Supply chain management and advertising are the two main areas of research among researchers.</p>

<p>In this paper we discuss software programs used for teaching business courses and used in business research. The software programs used are MATLAB, R Studio, Microsoft Excel, SPSS, SAS and Python. This paper goes into details about the functions of each software program and how each program is proficient and programmed for different areas of research. Using tables and figures, we discuss the ease of use per program, the difficulty based on a scale for beginner uses, the storage capacity of each programming language, the availability to business students and researchers and how applicable each program is with a basic knowledge of how to use it. The cost of each statically programing package is also covered. The detailed functions of the various programs are covered in Figures throughout and tables through the paper as well. It is a well-known fact that MATLAB, R, Python, Excel, SPSS and SAS are the most important five languages to be learned for data analysis.</p>

The question that motivated this editorial was, “where are the IB experiments?” The short answer is that experiments are largely absent from the IB literature; and we argue that they shouldn’t be. Experimental methods offer the opportunity to significantly improve the evidence for the causal relationships in international business research in a variety of ways. In this article we highlight the value and limitations of experiments in IB research, and explain the basic tenets of experimental design and thinking with the goal of encouraging the submission of more papers with an experimental design to JIBS.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the family business literature on human resource management (HRM) activities within family-owned businesses to advance theory and practice.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is a review of research on the formation, adaptation, and termination of the employment relationship within family businesses.FindingsImportant areas for future research are revealed. For example, little research investigates how family members are recruited, socialized, or how exit decisions are made. In contrast, significant attention has been given to role transitions during succession.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper focuses on managing employment relationships (e.g. recruitment, selection, etc.) within family businesses. The research revealed HRM activities within family businesses are often informal so aspects of the employment relationship may not be fully captured by extant research.Practical implicationsThis review provides specific HRM suggestions for practitioners to consider. For example, this review highlights that training inside the family business can be as effective as training outside the family business.Originality/valueThis review is novel in applying an established HRM framework to family business research and focuses on HRM activities of family members as opposed to non-family employees. The paper offers considerations for families bringing next generation members into their businesses and preparing offspring to run them successfully.

This research evaluates the efficacy of integrating Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in business research methods at a university that provides educational and non-educational programs in Surabaya, Indonesia, aligning with national educational standards. The study aims to assess the impact of blended PBL and PjBL models on student performance, aiming for improved comprehension and application of research methods concepts. A quantitative approach was employed, sequentially applying PBL and PjBL within the curriculum. The 2022 Accounting Study Program cohort was sampled via random selection. Student-prepared research proposals were evaluated, and data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The integrated PBL and PjBL significantly correlate with enhanced academic performance in business research methods, suggesting improved understanding and application of concepts. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating PBL and PjBL to achieve competency-based educational goals in business research methods. By aligning with national standards, this approach enhances learning experiences and provides valuable insights for similar contexts.
