The traditional research backgrounds of engineering academics do not adequately prepare them to conduct quality education research. Nevertheless, there is institutional pressure on these academics to take a scholarly approach to teaching and conduct education research. What is required is an effective strategy to systematically help engineering academics to innovate, evaluate and publish education research and scholarship. This paper explores one model for structuring activities to help engineering and science academics develop their practices of education research. It is argued that the proposed Model for Action and Learning in Engineering Education Research (MALEER) presented is an effective strategy to prepare engineering academics to conduct quality education research. An initial model was developed, situated in various bodies of literature including communities of practice, professional identity development and becoming a professional, adult learning and reflection in and on action. It was then trialled with an engineering and science education research group set-up to help academics develop their education research practice. Evidence of the success of MALEER was drawn from the reflections of the coordinators of the group and the groups' developed practices and outcomes.

This paper proposes the idea of medical education research is teaching academic research based on the sprit of reform and creative times. The traditional idea of paying too much attention to scientific research and despising teaching is discarded and the modern idea of paying attention to both of scientific research and teaching is reconstructed, providing the theoretical support to medical education research. It will be in fever of the development of academic activities of medical education research and the development of more qualified teaching activities by medical schools. Key words: Medical teaching research; Scholarship of teaching; Academic research; Discussion

In the first issue of Volume 63, we focused our editorial on the need to improve research in teacher education by increasing the rigor and relevance of studies in the field. We referred to individual studies as in a structure that would serve as a knowledge base for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers (Knight, Lloyd, Arbaugh, Edmondson, Nolan, & Whitney, 2012). As researchers, we need to attend to both the quality of individual bricks and the positioning of those bricks within the framework. In other words, by situating our findings within the theoretical frameworks and prior research that undergird the knowledge base, we can advance the field. Research submitted to Journal of Teacher Education (JTE) is steadily improving. Although much of our own evidence as editors of JTE is anecdotal, coming from the hundreds of articles we encounter each year, evidence for improvement is emerging from other sources as well. Our acceptance rate has steadily increased while we have maintained the same high standards for publication. Although not the sole indicator of quality, the change in the impact of the journal may also signal a perceived increase in quality by readers of the journal. In a previous editorial (JTE 63:1), we cited our rank of 18 out of 177 education and education research journals and an impact factor of 1.891 as evidence of our standing in the field. Since that time, thanks to the efforts of previous editors and what we see as the improvement of research in teacher education leading to more citations, JTE has moved to number 10 of 203 journals and has increased the impact factor to 2.292 (Thompson Reuters, 2012). Nevertheless, we still have more to do. As editors, we spend a great deal of time articulating what makes some manuscripts publishable and others not. Manuscripts are often subjected to editorial team review prior to being sent out for peer scrutiny and always before their final acceptance. As we discuss the characteristics of various manuscripts, the complexity of defining research quality in a field with such diverse methods and topics becomes apparent. Others have explored the topic for education research in general (see, for example, National Research Council, 2002). However, as we continue this discussion, we find we are slowly acquiring a set of criteria which can be applied to diverse studies specifically in teacher education. Although these criteria are still emerging, we would like to expand the discussion to the JTE readership by sharing our thoughts on some of the criteria we have formulated to date. Criteria for Quality In judging manuscripts, we consider a number of questions related to criteria for quality. Some questions are dictated by criteria for appropriateness for JTE, but others revolve around more generic issues of quality. As editors of a journal with such a diverse readership, we find that to make the range of studies and topics accessible to proponents of different philosophies, research paradigms, and interests, authors need to be very explicit in their rationale and report of the research and how they have incorporated the criteria for quality in their studies. The following questions may help guide authors in this process. Appropriateness for JTE The first question we ask of any manuscript that comes across our desk is whether the study actually focuses on teacher education, and if so, would it be of interest to readers of the journal. Is the manuscript appropriate for JTE? Two types of manuscripts typically receive a negative response to this question. Studies that focus on teaching or teachers or students in elementary and secondary schools, without making an explicit connection to teacher education, constitute the first category. Merely mentioning the applicability of the findings for teacher education in the implications is not enough. The connection to teacher education should appear in the theoretical framework and the rationale for the study, as well as in the discussion and implications. …

Abstract At the Higher Education Research Group (HERG) Annual General Meeting on the 29 August 2018, it was proposed that the Research Group might consider broadening its remit to consider a wider context of geography education and formally include the geographies of education. In this editorial, we outline the background to this proposal and the process which was undertaken to evolve from HERG to the Geography and Education Research Group (GeogEd) over the following two years. We take the opportunity to introduce this special section of five papers, each offering a different perspective on the background to and future of the newly re‐framed Research Group. In this way they: (1) explore the history of the Research Group since its inception; (2) provide a critical overview of the geographies of education; (3) explore the reciprocal relationship between geography education and the geographies of education, and the process of (re)forming GeogEd; (4) offer reflections from senior members of the Royal Geographical Society and Geographical Association on the new Research Group; and (5) reflect on the opportunities the bringing together of different communities of practice under GeogEd might offer in the future.

This paper analyzes and summarizes the current situation of adult education research in recent years and hopes to play a certain reference role in exploring and solving the problems existing in the current domestic adult education, so as to make the domestic adult education develop towards a more healthy and sustainable direction.

Finnish STEM education research experts critically examined the focus of STEM education research, particularly in physics, chemistry, and biology, using the didactic triangle framework. Analyzing numerous research papers and master's theses from forums like NorDiNa and ESERA, three pivotal articles were highlighted. These articles revealed dominant research trends like the student-content relationship, underscored areas lacking attention, such as educators' insights into students' perceptions, and advocated for a broader, more holistic approach in future STEM education research endeavors.

What is the current state of Adult Education research in Manitoba? The paper attempts to answer this question by examining adult education research from the following perspectives: definitions and types of research activities, organizational context, topics of research, populations studied, and methods utilized.

Although conceptual models are frequently used to illustrate research questions under investigation, there is a paucity of articles about how to develop conceptual models or their importance to health education research and practice. A number of uses of the term model exist. Therefore, we describe a conceptual model developed to guide health education research or practice as a diagram of proposed causal linkages among a set of concepts believed to be related to a specific public health problem. Although informed by the multicausal models of public health, the conceptual models we describe differ from those models in that they do not incorporate all factors correlated with an endpoint of interest. Rather they show only the small part of the causal web selected for study. Conceptual models differ from theory in that they are not usually concerned with global classes of behavior but with specific types of behavior in specific contexts. They often are informed by more than one theory, as well as by empirical findings. Because of the usefulness of conceptual models in narrowing both research questions and the targets of intervention, we advocate the inclusion of the model development process in public health education research methods courses.
