Alaska residents are already feeling the tangible impacts of climate change and are concerned about future impacts. In response, they have generated a large quantity of documents that describe their climate change-related research needs. This paper reviews and codes 63 stakeholder-generated documents that address climate change research needs in Alaska in order to synthesize common research needs and assess gaps in needs assessment. We find that research needs related to infrastructure, economics, hazards and safety, and terrestrial ecosystem impacts are most frequently mentioned. The review identifies a current focus on broad-scale expert assessments, and a gap in local-scale and participatory approaches. The majority of identified information needs cross traditional disciplines and require interdisciplinary approaches. Finally, this research suggests that scientists, stakeholders, and information translators in Alaska engage in iterative dialog in order to better link scientific inquiry to practice.

(1) Background: This article examines the funding landscape of climate change adaptation research in South Africa to understand the origin, distribution, and thematic prioritization of funding for climate change research in South Africa. (2) Methods: The article used specific search terms to query peer-reviewed publications in the Web of Science and Scopus databases (1985 to 2023). (3) Results: Environmental Science emerged as the most dominant research area during this period, while Agriculture appeared in the top four positions among research areas in climate change adaptation research in South Africa in both databases. The largest number of publications on climate change adaptation research in South Africa is generated through domestic funding, followed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The National Research Foundation (NRF) had the highest number of publications. The analysis revealed a strong paucity of funding relationship between South Africa and other African countries in the field of climate change adaptation research. (4) Conclusions: Knowledge of these trends can inform policy decisions on funding of climate change adaptation in South Africa and strategic partnerships between South Africa and the rest of the world.

... My approach to the issue of adaptation in northern communities is based on my experience working with the community of Sachs Harbour, Northwest Territories, and the project Inuit Observations of Climate Change (Riedlinger, 1999). The project is a collaborative research effort documenting Inuvialuit knowledge of climate change research. A secondary goal is to understand adaptive strategies used by the community to respond to climate change phenomena. Here, I describe how current climate-related environmental changes are affecting seasonal subsistence activity in Sachs Harbour and discuss how Inuvialuit are coping with such impacts.

The U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP) has issued its Fiscal Year 2007 report to the U.S. Congress documenting the program's previous year's activities and its plans for the current year. The CCSP coordinates climate change research across 13 federal agencies and departments and oversees the creation and publication of the 21 CCSP synthesis and assessment reports, the first of which was published in April 2006. During FY2007, CCSP will focus on several areas including integrating new remotely sensed measurements of clouds and aerosols into climate prediction, acquiring a source for Landsat‐like imagery, developing research and regional partnerships to help the nation cope with drought, and quantifying the North American carbon budget.

This study assessed the health burden attributable to childhood underweight through 2050 focusing on disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), by considering the latest scenarios for climate change studies (representative concentration pathways and shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs)) and conducting sensitivity analysis. A regression model for estimating DALYs attributable to childhood underweight (DAtU) was developed using the relationship between DAtU and childhood stunting. We combined a global computable general equilibrium model, a crop model, and two regression models to assess the future health burden. We found that (i) world total DAtU decreases from 2005 by 28 ∼ 63% in 2050 depending on the socioeconomic scenarios. Per capita DAtU also decreases in all regions under either scenario in 2050, but the decreases vary significantly by regions and scenarios. (ii) The impact of climate change is relatively small in the framework of this study but, on the other hand, socioeconomic conditions have a great impact on the future health burden. (iii) Parameter uncertainty of the regression models is the second largest factor on uncertainty of the result following the changes in socioeconomic condition, and uncertainty derived from the difference in global circulation models is the smallest in the framework of this study.
