This paper examines the origins, development, and current status of the sociology of knowledge in American sociology. If a traditional and narrow definition of the sociology of knowledge is employed, few American studies appear to fall into this area of interest. However, when the sociology of knowledge is defined as a general frame of reference that is utilized in various research endeavors, definite orientations can be recognized. Most studies are seen as falling under one or more of the questions posed by Robert K. Merton in his paradigm for the sociology of knowledge. The paper concludes with a discussion of possible future trends.

Due to digital technology, data production has grown exponentially, creating enormous enthusiasm within the scientific community for “big data”. This socio-technical phenomenon gives rise to dualities and conflicting attitudes in sociology: unlimited synchronic numerical data against classical data at risk of expiry, rigorous methodological process as opposed to a stagnation of the protocol. And has put in a vice the research techniques and their associated modes of resonance. In this article, from a consultation of the literature, three fundamental aspects will be subject to explore: the forced adjustment of the domain, the transformations of the methods of data collection, and the models of reasoning about the theory. In the outcome, the vast availability of digital data show how far the digital has invaded sociology by announcing the embarrassment of classical researchers facing big data, the obsolescence of traditional techniques and the change of models reasoning. Moreover, three models of interaction trace the ways of dealing with this digital derivative ranging from protection by the total refusal so that the discipline does not become digital, conservation manifested by a reserved acceptance by sociologists, finally, a trend of adoption under the pretext that digital technology transforms the functioning of societies and the ways of knowing about them.

The chapter evaluates the reformed arrangements for the management and delivery of social care following the NHS and Community Care Act 1990 using a framework drawn from economic sociology. Research findings describing how a group of newly disabled older people fared as consumers of the services are summarized. An explanatory account is given drawing upon concepts and theory to be found in the growing literature on the sociology of economic life, particularly studies of consumption. The central conclusion is that it is difficult to account for the effects of the recent reforms on community care consumers without situating them within a context of existing social relations and institutions. If the reforms are to succeed they must change not just the practical mechanics of service funding and delivery but deeply embedded values and behavioural norms.

In a character analysis of mainstream sociology in Sweden the compulsive character is found to be similar to the characteristics of the behaviour of the rigorous empiricist The choice of paradigm in Swedish sociology is seen as a reaction to smallness. The relationship between social democracy and sociology is described as an unfortunate combination of great expectations and castration anxiety. The identity crisis of sociology in the 1970's is assumed to have two possible outcomes Regression or maturation. Finally there is a vision of a Sociology, of passion.

This review essay explores a number of key books published in transnational feminist sociology over the last 20 years, including Kamala Kempadoo’s (2004) Sexing the Caribbean, Pei-Chia Lan’s (2006) Global Cinderellas, Smitha Radhakrishnan’s (2011) Appropriately Indian, Héctor Carrillo’s (2018) Pathways of Desire, Oluwakemi Balogun’s (2020) Beauty Diplomacy, and Rhacel Parreñas’ (2021) Unfree. The review analyzes three key themes found in transnational feminist sociology: migrant domestic work, sexuality and migration, and gender and nationalism. It also points to the important contributions transnational feminist research makes to sociology through its focus on global-local processes, intersectional inequalities, and the relationship between structure and agency.

Abstract In reaction to the criticisms to which analytical sociology has been subject with increasing frequency, the article attempts an overall assessment of this research program by addressing the following questions: where does contemporary analytical sociology come from? what are the differences between the “old” and “new” analytical sociology? what does analytical sociology really consist of? do the critics of analytical sociology have good reasons to be critical? Gross’s 2009 ASR article is deeply discussed in order to answer the last question.
