Abstract Background: Medical professionals have historically received timely information through newsletters that deliver the most up-to-date information. Such newsletters save the reader time in searching through resources by providing them information in succinct format. Therefore, a central Ohio institution with many osteopathic post-graduate programs created a monthly osteopathic newsletter to communicate its learning opportunities in an effective manner. Objective: To identify the frequency of medical staff utilizing a monthly osteopathic newsletter, the items valued most in a newsletter, and the preferred method of obtaining medical news. Methods: The osteopathic newsletter was put into circulation among medical education staff, residents, fellows, and affiliated medical students for one year between December 2021 and November 2022. After a year, a survey was sent to all newsletter recipients through the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) system program and respondents answered questions regarding readership, engagement, and suggested areas of improvement. The data was compiled over the course of six weeks, analyzed using qualitative statistics, and used to implement changes in newsletter layout, content, and distribution. The newsletter was advertised as “new and improved” with this reflective content. After an additional six months of distribution, a follow-up survey was sent in June 2023. Comparisons were made between the first and second surveys using chi-squared tests and the p-value was set at 0.05. Results: There was statistically significant increase in readership from the first survey to the second survey at +27.5% (p<.0.001). Regarding content, the “News” and “Clinical Pearls” sections were top rated in both surveys and there were statistically significant increases in choice of these sections as time progressed (+15.5%, p = 0.024 for “News”; and +25.5%, p <0.001 for “Clinical Pearls,” respectively). While regular readership of the newsletter continued to grow throughout the survey, 95% of all respondents answered they had learned more about osteopathic medicine. Conclusions: This study suggests that e-newsletters like this osteopathic newsletter could be a successful option for systems to engage with groups, improve communication, and update readers on news and osteopathic educational content.

Abstract In the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) clinic, low back pain is a common complaint that has a plethora of root causes. The sacrum is a common culprit for low back pain as it bears the weight of the axial skeleton and distributes the load throughout the pelvis. Treatment of the second posterior sacral segment (S2) tenderpoint with counterstrain can be used to resolve somatic dysfunctions of the sacrum. Prior techniques have addressed the sacral tenderpoints using one vector of motion. In this article, the complexity of sacral motion is discussed along with how to effectively target the sacrum using both arms of the sacroiliac joint to create a precise position of ease and utilizing a combination of Facilitated Positional Release (FPR) and Myofascial Release (MFR) to treat. Additionally, this article will elaborate on indications, contraindications, and a problem-solving list if the dysfunction does not resolve.

Abstract There are very few reports regarding the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting for a comatose patient. This case report presents an instance where OMT was implemented after the patient remained comatose for 18 days and was being considered for terminal weaning due to their prolonged unconsciousness. The patient’s prolonged comatose state caused concerns about irreversible neurological damage, and as such, end-of-life decisions were being considered. OMT was administered in an effort to stimulate the patient’s alertness and reduce the patient’s allostatic load. The patient regained consciousness within ten hours after OMT was administered, suggesting a potentially significant role for OMT in the patient’s recovery. This case underscores the potential for OMT to be used in the ICU as a safe and feasible approach to enhance patient outcomes. Although only a single example of effective treatment, the results of this case study suggest that further research into the role of OMT in comatose patient recovery and OMT’s broader implications in critical care are warranted.

Abstract Four cases of patients with Long COVID symptoms of loss of the sense of smell and sense of taste are presented. They differ from the findings in the published case record of anosmia and loss of taste in Magoun. Osteopathic examination revealed flexion and extension of the occiput. No flexion or extension motion of the sphenoid was appreciated. A novel application of the underlying concepts of Osteopathic Cranial Manipulative Medicine is described. This approach resulted in a rapid resolution of the symptoms of loss of the senses of smell and taste, which have persisted for more than a year. An hypothesis for a possible mechanism of the pathophysiology is advanced. The olfactory nerve (CN I) lies on the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone. When the inflamed sphenoid flexes, becoming stuck down forward on the cribriform plate of an inflamed ethmoid. This may have resulted in impingement of CN I, which then resulted further in anosmia (loss of smell) and concomitant loss of taste.

Introduction/Background: Spinal stenosis is a disorder that causes increased fatiguability with extension-based activities and impairment of activities of daily living. Axonal sensorimotor neuropathy is a subtype of Guillain-Barre Syndrome characterized by acute onset of distal weakness, loss of deep tendon reflexes and sensory symptoms. Long COVID includes a wide range of new, returning, or ongoing health problems experienced after COVID-19 infection. All three disorders can alter neurologic function via different pathophysiology. Case: A 57-year-old male presented to the OMM clinic with complaints of chronic headache, chronic low back pain, chronic memory impairment, depression, and anxiety. History was notable for axonal sensorimotor neuropathy and acute respiratory failure due to COVID-19 infection four months prior. Hospitalization was followed by increased fatigue, cognitive impairment, depression, and anxiety. Osteopathic structural LBORC-NUFA Poster Abstracts 2023: Students ABSTRACTS Every year at the American Academy of Osteopathy Convocation, the Louisa Burns Osteopathic Research Committee (LBORC) and the National Undergraduate Fellows Association (NUFA) together host a research poster presentation session for residents and medical students. The 2023 poster abstracts for students are presented here.

Abstract Introduction: Based on the osteopathic principle that “structure and function are interrelated,” a kidney that is not moving optimally with respiration might be limited in its physiologic functions as well. The objective of this study was to determine if osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) affects craniocaudal renal mobility and if there are any correlations between renal mobility and blood pressure measurements. Methods: 33 healthy female participants were recruited. 25 participants were in the treatment group, and 8 in the control group. All participants’ blood pressures were recorded initially. All participants were then evaluated for craniocaudal renal mobility via ultrasound measurements using Mindray Z6 technology. The treatment group then received an OMT protocol, while the control group rested for 20 minutes. The ultrasound evaluation for renal mobility was then repeated on the participants, and a final blood pressure reading obtained (Touro College HSIRB #1799). Results: OMT significantly increased the mobility of the right kidney (P<0.05), but not the left kidney. Although there was no direct correlation between changes in renal mobility and changes in blood pressure, both the systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings decreased significantly (P<0.05) after OMT. Conclusion: In this preliminary study, right kidney mobility increased and systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements both decreased after OMT. Follow-up studies are warranted to further explore kidney mobility and its potential association with blood pressure measurements, as well as the effects of OMT on kidney mobility and blood pressure.
