Abstract Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) refers to a holistic approach to managing soil fertility that combines a variety of techniques and practices to improve soil health and enhance agricultural productivity, particularly in smallholder farming systems. Despite the associated higher labor and other input demands associated with ISFM adoption, there is limited empirical evidence regarding the positive outcomes of these investments at the household level. Using data from 380 tomato farmers in three regions of Ghana, we explore the relationship between ISFM adoption and household welfare. The methodology employed relies on inverse probability weighting regression adjustment (IPWRA). The findings reveal that ISFM adoption positively impacts household welfare by increasing net income by GH₵436.88 ($60.43)/ha, improving household assets by GH₵518.17 ($71.67)/ha, enhancing food security by 1.23 points, and reducing household expenditure by GH₵57.39 ($7.94)/ha. The results highlight ISFM’s potential to enhance smallholder welfare through increased income, improved household assets, and better food security, contributing to poverty reduction and sustainable agricultural development. Policies should focus on improving access to fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides, coupled with extension services and farmer education programs to promote ISFM adoption. Tailored interventions targeting older and more experienced farmers, as well as household heads, are essential to overcome barriers to adoption and maximize the economic and welfare benefits of ISFM practices.

Abstract Smartphones, as more sophisticated versions of mobile phones, are expected to significantly influence how rural households manage their farms. This paper examines the extent to which smartphone ownership affects the adoption of modern agricultural inputs and technologies at the extensive margin. Using a rich, nationally representative household-level dataset from Nigeria and appropriate identification strategies, we find that smartphone ownership increases the likelihood of hiring labor, using phytosanitary inputs, and operating tractors. These findings suggest that promoting the diffusion of modern digital tools in rural areas can complement traditional agricultural input support programs, offering a promising avenue to enhance agricultural productivity and livelihoods in Nigeria.

Abstract Integrating nature and green space into urban areas is a growing social challenge. The dollar value that renters place on public amenities when choosing where to live is essential for policymakers and urban planners looking to provide equitable access to environmental amenities and other public goods. This study estimates renter willingness to pay (WTP) for urban green space in the greater Boston area, utilizing a sorting model framework with data on census, transit, and neighborhood quality measures. My results suggest that renter household WTP is between $1.17 and $1.64 for an additional percentage point of urban green space in their location decisions. I examine differences in WTP for green space between white and minority renters, uncovering both shared and divergent sorting behaviors, as well as disparities in the distribution of environmental benefits across groups.

Abstract Social media has the potential to reshape rural agriculture in developing nations in ways that differ from other Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) because the communication method is mediated through social capital that expands and strengthens relationships. This paper uses two quasi-experimental approaches to estimate the impact of four different communication treatments (including three ICTs) on production practices of small-scale farmers in Rondônia, Brazil. Our difference-in-differences estimation controls for time-invariant unobservable differences in the characteristics of households that do and do not engage with ICTs and draws on a panel from 2009 and 2019. Our propensity score matching is estimated with over 1,200 farmer households surveyed in 2019. We find that the use of social media increases the uptake of both old and new pasture management and cattle practices that are promoted by state and federal agencies via their social media feeds. We also test the impact of the interaction between social media and extension agent visits and find evidence appear to operate independently, potentially as substitutes. Our results suggest that social media is an effective and low-cost way for extension agencies to reach farmers, although we are uncertain as to whether these effects would be stronger with targeted extension visits that use social media to reinforce messaging.

Abstract Concentration in animal-based protein industries in the United States continues to garner the interest of policymakers, researchers, and consumers alike. We assess the impacts of industry concentration on animal productivity and downstream prices in the US broiler chicken industry between 1991 and 2019. We compile a dataset that matches annual, plant-level information on ownership and sales for all poultry processing facilities in the United States with market-level wholesale composite prices and bird yields. Consolidation over the last three decades has greatly contributed to industry concentration, leading to higher wholesale composite broiler prices (16.3%) and gains in animal productivity (2.4%).

Abstract We analyze the equilibrium conditions in which contracts are desirable for firms (buyers) with various levels of management efficiencies procuring a factor input under two levels of quality from supplies. The quality of the factor input, which affects production efficiency, may be known to the buyer; the efficiency of the firm is not known to the supplier. We estimate, using principal-agent models, that firms with high-management efficiency do not have the incentive to pay a quality premium to suppliers, but firms operating with low management efficiency are willing to offer a price premium for quality. The model is applied to the question of preconditioning cattle for the feedlot.

Abstract Commodity index trading in futures markets is a relatively new investment strategy whose consequences are not fully understood. This paper tests the hypothesis that long-only, passive index trading in agricultural futures markets influences futures prices. Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models are a common empirical research approach for analyzing index trading. Factor-Augmented Vector Autoregression (FAVAR) models are a new approach to analyzing index trading. FAVAR models can incorporate a large data set into the traditional VAR framework. Using a FAVAR model improves the analysis by including additional market factors relevant to futures price formation. Models were estimated for 13 agricultural commodities (corn, soybean, soybean oil, soybean meal, soft red winter wheat, hard red winter wheat, cotton, cocoa, sugar, coffee, live cattle, feeder cattle, and lean hog) from January 2006 to December 2022. The results demonstrate the added value of FAVAR models in explaining the dynamics between prices and index trading. The conclusions are similar to other findings that prices lead index positions; however, adding demand-related data through a FAVAR model allows for a better understanding of market dynamics.

Abstract We estimate a recreation demand model for warmwater fishing in Delaware and then use it to measure welfare gains associated with improved fishing quality as measured by catch rate of fish, diversity of species, and clarity of water. We use a “linked” site choice – trip frequency model with data gathered by the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife. Our site choice model includes 118 rivers and lakes in the state with detailed characteristics of each. We develop hypothetical scenarios of fishing quality improvement involving combinations of fish catch, fish diversity, and water clarity and apply it to individual water bodies, water basins, selected water body groupings, and statewide. Values are reported in seasonal per angler and aggregate terms.

Abstract New breeding methods have provided scientists with opportunities to improve traits in a wide range of crops, however, there remains resistance to foods that are produced from these crops, and mandates on labels used to describe such processes continue to be a source of policy debate. Here we focus on gene editing and examine (i) whether consumer acceptance varies when the technology is applied to different ingredients (unrefined versus highly refined ingredients) and (ii) the impact of two different claims related to gene editing (health-focused claim versus an environment-focused claim). Our results show that consumers are less likely to purchase a food product that includes gene-edited ingredients, yet the ingredient that is gene-edited is not important. We also find evidence that both of our selected claims about foods produced using gene-edited ingredients would increase consumers’ likelihood to purchase relative to the case with no claims.

Abstract Expert and peer reviews and popularity are freely available both on the Internet and in printed materials for a variety of food products. Using two experimental studies with non-hypothetical tastings and auctions, we explore the impact of peer tasting popularity, actual peer ratings, and expert ratings on demand for wines consumers can or have tasted. We find that higher own wine ratings are associated with higher willingness to pay (WTP). Morevoer, higher peer and expert rating scores increase consumer WTP for wine even after controlling for the impact of consumers’ own ratings. Observed peer popularity also increases WTP for preferred wines.
