This article introduces an Australian adaptation of an approach to supporting school leadership and improvement pioneered by educationalists David Townsend and Pam Adams, from Alberta, Canada. Referred to as the North Coast Initiative for School Improvement, the adaptation involved school leaders, academics, and government officials who combined to implement the twin processes of collaborative inquiry and generative dialogue at about sixty primary and secondary schools across the North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. The initiative appears from all reports to have been both well received and highly impactful, including in terms of improved student performance. This issue of the AJER offers an exploration from an Australian perspective of the principles underpinning the two processes. It also presents case studies from an Australian setting of the impact of these processes on school leadership and improvement. In this autobiographical narrative inquiry, I continued to make sense of a Deweyan-inspired narrative conception of hope (LeMay, 2014). I started with a remembered story that occurred on a First Nation shortly after I commenced working at a post-secondary institution. Following that, I shared stories that led me to wonder about a Deweyan-inspired narrative conception of hope and then what I learned in a dissertation with two teachers as we worked with a Deweyan-inspired narrative conception of hope. From there, I unpacked the remembered story, using the three learnings that resonated in my sensemaking with the two teachers. Lastly, I reflected on how this inquiry inspired me to continue to make sense of students’ storied experiences of working with a narrative pedagogy of hope (LeMay, 2014) in relation to their well-being. J'ai commencé par me souvenir d'une histoire qui s'est produite sur une Première Nation peu après que j'ai commencé à travailler dans un établissement postsecondaire. Ensuite, j'ai partagé les histoires qui m'ont amenée à m'interroger sur une conception narrative de l'espoir inspirée par Dewey, puis ce que j'ai appris dans le cadre d'une dissertation avec deux enseignants alors que nous travaillions avec une conception narrative de l'espoir inspirée par Dewey. Ensuite, j'ai décortiqué l'histoire dont je me souviens en utilisant les trois apprentissages qui ont résonné dans ma recherche de sens avec les deux enseignants. Enfin, j'ai réfléchi à la façon dont cette enquête m'a inspirée pour continuer à donner du sens aux expériences narratives des élèves qui travaillent avec une pédagogie narrative de l'espoir (LeMay, 2014) en relation avec leur bien-être. The Lesson Study is a professional development model that places teachers at the center of practice and is used in the professional development of teachers who are currently in teacher training or currently in service. In Turkey, the professional development of teachers from various branches is also supported by using this model. However, no previous studies have been found on the use of this model with pre-school teachers. This study was carried out to support and improve the quality of teachers’ picture story reading activities by means of lesson study and therefore support the language and early literacy skills of children. Mixed method design was used in the study by utilizing convergent parallel mixed method design. The study group consisted of 14 teachers employed at two independent kindergartens in Bolu city center and 223 children attending these schools during the 2017-2018 academic year. After obtaining all qualitative and quantitative data, statistical analyses were conducted on the quantitative data and content analysis was performed on the qualitative data. As a result of the study, we determined that dialogic reading bags that are developed through the Lesson Study model support children's language development and early literacy skills. In addition, we determined that the Lesson Study model had a positive impact on pre-school teachers’ professional development. En Turquie aussi, ce modèle sert à appuyer le développement professionnel des enseignants dans divers domaines. Toutefois, nous n’avons recensé aucune recherche antérieure portant sur l’emploi de ce modèle auprès d’enseignants au préscolaire. Cette étude a été entreprise pour appuyer et améliorer la qualité des activités liées à la lecture de livres d’images et ainsi appuyer les compétences linguistiques et les habiletés en lecture et écriture de jeunes enfants. L’étude repose sur une modèle mixte parallèle et convergent. Le groupe d’étude était composé de 14 enseignants provenant de deux maternelles indépendantes du centre-ville de Bolu et des 223 enfants qui ont fréquenté ces écoles pendant l’année académique 2017-2018. Suite à la cueillette de toutes les données qualitatives et quantitatives, les données qualitatives ont fait l’objet d’analyses statistiques. Les résultats indiquent que les sacs qui accompagnent la lecture dialogue et qui font partie du modèle de l’étude de cours appuient le développement des compétences linguistiques et des habiletés en lecture et écriture de jeunes enfants. De plus, nous avons déterminé que le modèle d’étude de cours avait un impact positif sur le développement professionnel des enseignants au préscolaire. The learning attainment of South African learners in mathematics is, as The International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data reveal, far from optimal. A key contributing factor is a shortage of competent and confident qualified mathematics teachers. The Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) offered at South African universities is a key qualification designed to address this challenge (amongst others, such as the Bachelor of Education [B.Ed.]). However, the success of the PGCE as a preparation for mathematics teachers is not without concern, as this paper argues. Using a qualitative case study focusing on a PGCE with a mathematics focus offered by a university of technology, this paper discusses the constraints identified by prospective teachers and teacher educators. Constraints are explored by focusing on the curriculum, partnerships, and policy relating to the delivery of the PGCE as true and critical to the efficacy of the program. The paper contributes to context-specific understanding of the constraints influencing the PGCE’s efficacy (as offered in 2014) in developing newly qualified teachers’ (NQTs) skills and knowledge to be confident and competent mathematics teachers. Un facteur qui contribue de facon significative a ce phenomene est le manque d’enseignants qualifies qui sont competents et confiants. Le certificat d’etudes superieures en education (PGCE) offert dans les universites en Afrique du Sud est une qualification importante concue pour faire face a ce defi (le Baccalaureat en Education, entre autres). Toutefois, la reussite du PGCE comme outil de preparation pour les enseignants n’est pas sans inquietude, comme le soutient cet article. En s’appuyant sur une etude de cas qualitative portant sur un PGCE avec une majeur en mathematiques et offert par une universite de technologie, cet article discute des contraintes identifiees par de futurs enseignants et formateurs d’enseignants. Les contraintes sont examinees en se penchant sur le curriculum, les partenariats et les politiques relatives a la prestation du PGCE pour evaluer dans quelle mesure ils sont veritables et essentiels au programme. Study abroad programs can be exceptional learning opportunities for students.Doerr applied critical theory that advances our understanding of the discursive and conceptual frames commonly used in the study of higher education to talk about them.This author enriched the literature surrounding study abroad and international students by writing from her own experience and perspective studying abroad.Doerr challenged institutional bromides that presume and simplify the lasting impacts of study abroad and other programs, which immerse learners in unfamiliar surroundings.It is an ambitious and multi-disciplinary book that used a wide canvas and brought a welcome perspective from cultural anthropology and the study of language politics.The book provided plenty of refreshing insight and moved the study abroad discussion beyond what Simon Marginson (2014) referred to as the "galling" (p.9) deficit frames often applied to cross-border learners.Educators and administrators who plan, design, implement, and assess border or boundary crossing programs will recognize the issues raised in this book, and may navigate them more confidently after reading it.The author has a rich background studying abroad, and that background contributes to the ethnographic interrogation of conventional study abroad assumptions and practices.She was born and raised in Japan, and her first study abroad experience was a three week stay in the United Kingdom when she was just 11 years old.A second experience was a one-year International Youth Exchange sponsored by a Rotary Club in Tokyo, and at the age of 18 she took up the exchange in Aotearoa (New Zealand).This life-changing experience had a deep and lasting impact on her worldview, and she would return to New Zealand to do ethnographic research.Later, she left Japan and studied as an international doctoral student in cultural anthropology at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.In each of these experiences, her understandings and analytical approaches grew, and she developed her ability to engage the social complexity around her.These formative experiences sensitized her to the dynamic linguistic, cultural, and social systems in which she participated or observed, and which prove to be a solid foundation for writing this type of book.Doerr addressed topical issues and assumptions that are related to study abroad in seven chapters, and closed each chapter with readings and questions.Chapter one interrogated ideology related to national, global, and globalist notions that organize our thinking in relation to globalism, global competence, and global citizens.Doerr observed that when these terms dehistoricize and homogenize the social evolution and diffusion of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they are advancing an ideological position.When globalism literature uncritically accepts and "valorizes global connections as breaking down barriers" (p.36), it assumes political

Research has revealed that school recess is often challenged by a social landscape that can undermine opportunities for positive interactions and meaningful play. This study assessed differences in levels of inside and outside recess enjoyment, positive and negative affect, peer belongingness, victimization, and physical activity between students with and without a disability. The sample consisted of 337 students in grades 4 through 8 from 14 elementary schools in southern Ontario, Canada. Of these, 31 students reported having a disability and 306 reported none. Data was collected through a 36-item online survey. Results revealed that those with a disability scored significantly (p < .01) higher on measures of enjoyment of inside recess, negative affect, and victimization while significantly lower in positive affect and outside recess enjoyment, peer belongingness, and physical activity. Children with a disability may benefit from a recess climate with more psychosocial supports. Cette étude a évalué les différences entre les élèves avec un handicap et les élèves sans handicap quant aux facteurs suivants : le niveau de plaisir ressenti pendant les récréations à l’intérieur et les récréations à l’extérieur; les affects positifs and négatifs; le sentiment d’appartenance au groupe de pairs; la victimisation; et l’activité physique. Notre échantillon regroupait 337 élèves de la 4e à la 8e année provenant de 14 écoles élémentaires dans le sud de l’Ontario, au Canada. Parmi ceux-ci, 31 élèves ont déclaré avoir un handicap et 306 ont indiqué ne pas avoir de handicap. Les données ont été recueillies par un sondage en ligne à 36 questions. Les résultats indiquent que la cote pour les élèves avec un handicap était significativement supérieure (p < .01) pour les mesures portant sur le plaisir ressenti pendant les récréations à l’intérieur, l’affect négatif et la victimisation. Leur cote était significativement inférieure pour les mesures portant sur l’affect négatif, le plaisir ressenti pendant les récréations à l’extérieur, le sentiment d’appartenance au groupe de pairs et l’activité physique.
