In this paper we study the computational complexity issues of the problem of secondary domination (known also as (1, 2)-domination) in several graph classes. We also study the computational complexity of the problem of determining whether the domination and secondary domination numbers are equal. In particular, we study the influence of triangles and vertices of degree 1 on these numbers. Also, an optimal algorithm for finding a minimum secondary dominating set in trees is presented.

In the Token Sliding problem we are given a graph G and two independent sets Is\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$I_s$$\\end{document} and It\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$I_t$$\\end{document} in G of size k≥1\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$k \\ge 1$$\\end{document}. The goal is to decide whether there exists a sequence ⟨I1,I2,…,Iℓ⟩\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\langle I_1, I_2, \\ldots , I_\\ell \\rangle $$\\end{document} of independent sets such that for all j∈{1,…,ℓ-1}\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$j \\in \\{1,\\ldots , \\ell - 1\\}$$\\end{document} the set Ij\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$I_j$$\\end{document} is an independent set of size k, I1=Is\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$I_1 = I_s$$\\end{document}, Iℓ=It\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$I_\\ell = I_t$$\\end{document} and Ij▵Ij+1={u,v}∈E(G)\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$I_j \ riangle I_{j + 1} = \\{u, v\\} \\in E(G)$$\\end{document}. Intuitively, we view each independent set as a collection of tokens placed on the vertices of the graph. Then, the problem asks whether there exists a sequence of independent sets that transforms Is\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$I_s$$\\end{document} into It\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$I_t$$\\end{document} where at each step we are allowed to slide one token from a vertex to a neighboring vertex. In this paper, we focus on the parameterized complexity of Token Sliding parameterized by k. As shown by Bartier et al. (Algorithmica 83(9):2914–2951, 2021. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00453-021-00848-1), the problem is W[1]-hard on graphs of girth four or less, and the authors posed the question of whether there exists a constant p≥5\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$p \\ge 5$$\\end{document} such that the problem becomes fixed-parameter tractable on graphs of girth at least p. We answer their question positively and prove that the problem is indeed fixed-parameter tractable on graphs of girth five or more, which establishes a full classification of the tractability of Token Sliding parameterized by the number of tokens based on the girth of the input graph.

In this paper, we study the following robust optimization problem. Given a set family representing feasibility and candidate objective functions, we choose a feasible set, and then an adversary chooses one objective function, knowing our choice. The goal is to find a randomized strategy (i.e., a probability distribution over the feasible sets) that maximizes the expected objective value in the worst case. This problem is fundamental in wide areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, game theory, and optimization. To solve the problem, we provide a general framework based on the dual linear programming problem. In the framework, we utilize the ellipsoid algorithm with the approximate separation algorithm. We prove that there exists an α\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\alpha $$\\end{document}-approximation algorithm for our robust optimization problem if there exists an α\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\alpha $$\\end{document}-approximation algorithm for finding a (deterministic) feasible set that maximizes a nonnegative linear combination of the candidate objective functions. Using our result, we provide approximation algorithms for the max–min fair randomized allocation problem and the maximum cardinality robustness problem with a knapsack constraint.

Abstract Matrix permanents are hard to compute or even estimate in general. It had been previously suggested that the permanents of Positive Semidefinite (PSD) matrices may have efficient approximations. By relating PSD permanents to a task in quantum state tomography, we show that PSD permanents are NP-hard to approximate within a constant factor, and so admit no polynomial-time approximation scheme (unless P = NP). We also establish that several natural tasks in quantum state tomography, even approximately, are NP-hard in the dimension of the Hilbert space. These state tomography tasks therefore remain hard even with only logarithmically few qubits.

In line with the recent development in topological graph theory, we are considering undirected graphs that are allowed to contain multiple edges, loops, and semi-edges. A graph is called simple if it contains no semi-edges, no loops, and no multiple edges. A graph covering projection, also known as a locally bijective homomorphism, is a mapping between vertices and edges of two graphs which preserves incidences and which is a local bijection on the edge-neighborhood of every vertex. This notion stems from topological graph theory, but has also found applications in combinatorics and theoretical computer science. It has been known that for every fixed simple regular graph H of valency greater than 2, deciding if an input graph covers H is NP-complete. Graphs with semi-edges have been considered in this context only recently and only partial results on the complexity of covering such graphs are known so far. In this paper we consider the list version of the problem, called List-H-Cover, where the vertices and edges of the input graph come with lists of admissible targets. Our main result reads that the List-H-Cover problem is NP-complete for every regular graph H of valency greater than 2 which contains at least one semi-simple vertex (i.e., a vertex which is incident with no loops, with no multiple edges and with at most one semi-edge). Using this result we show the NPco/polytime dichotomy for the computational complexity of List-H-Cover for cubic graphs. In this section we present formal definitions of graphs and graph covering projections, as well as some auxiliary notions used later in the paper.

While the theoretical analysis of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) has made significant progress for pseudo-Boolean optimization problems in the last 25 years, only sporadic theoretical results exist on how EAs solve permutation-based problems. To overcome the lack of permutation-based benchmark problems, we propose a general way to transfer the classic pseudo-Boolean benchmarks into benchmarks defined on sets of permutations. We then conduct a rigorous runtime analysis of the permutation-based (1 + 1) EA proposed by Scharnow, Tinnefeld, and Wegener (2004) on the analogues of the LeadingOnes and Jump benchmarks. The latter shows that, different from bit-strings, it is not only the Hamming distance that determines how difficult it is to mutate a permutation σ into another one τ , but also the precise cycle structure of στ −1 . For this reason, we also regard the more symmetric scramble mutation operator. We observe that it not only leads to simpler proofs, but also † Author-generated version of a paper appearing in Algorithmica. Extends a paper that appeared in the proceedings of GECCO 2022 [DGI22]. This version contains all proofs that were omitted in [DGI22] for reasons of space. It contains as new results the tight runtime estimates for the permutation-based LeadingOnes problem when using the classic or the heavy-tailed scramble operator. It also contains a section with experimental results, which includes an analysis of the probability that the four mutation operators discussed in this work generate an offspring equal to the parent.

A k-page upward book embedding (kUBE) of a directed acyclic graph G is a book embeddings of G on k pages with the additional requirement that the vertices appear in a topological ordering along the spine of the book. The kUBE Testing problem, which asks whether a graph admits a kUBE, was introduced in 1999 by Heath, Pemmaraju, and Trenk (SIAM J Comput 28(4), 1999). In a companion paper, Heath and Pemmaraju (SIAM J Comput 28(5), 1999) proved that the problem is linear-time solvable for k=1 and NP-complete for k = 6. Closing this gap has been a central question in algorithmic graph theory since then. In this paper, we make a major contribution towards a definitive answer to the above question by showing that kUBE Testing is NP-complete for kge 3, even for st-graphs, i.e., acyclic directed graphs with a single source and a single sink. Indeed, our result, together with a recent work of Bekos et al. (Theor Comput Sci 946, 2023) that proves the NP-completeness of 2UBE for planar st-graphs, closes the question about the complexity of the kUBE problem for any k. Motivated by this hardness result, we then focus on the 2UBE Testing for planar st-graphs. On the algorithmic side, we present an O(f(beta )cdot n+n^3)-time algorithm for 2UBE Testing, where beta is the branchwidth of the input graph and f is a singly-exponential function on beta . Since the treewidth and the branchwidth of a graph are within a constant factor from each other, this result immediately yields an FPT algorithm for st-graphs of bounded treewidth. Furthermore, we describe an O(n)-time algorithm to test whether a plane st-graph whose faces have a special structure admits a 2UBE that additionally preserves the plane embedding of the input st-graph. On the combinatorial side, we present two notable families of plane st-graphs that always admit an embedding-preserving 2UBE.

Blocking flows were introduced by Dinic (Soviet Math Doklady 11: 1277–1280, 1970) to speed up the computation of maximum network flows. They have been used in algorithms for problems such as maximum cardinality matching of bipartite graphs Hopcroft and Karp (SIAM J Comput 2(4), 225–231, 1973) and general graphs Micali and Vazirani (in: Proceedings of the 21st Annual Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science, 17–27, 1980), maximum weight matching of general graphs Gabow and Tarjan (J ACM 38(4), 815–853, 1991), and many others. The blocking algorithm of Gabow and Tarjan (1991) for matching is based on depth-first search. We extend the depth-first search approach to find f-factors of general multigraphs. Here f is an arbitrary integral-valued function on vertices, an f-matching is a subgraph where every vertex x has degree $$\le f(x)$$ , an f-factor has equality in every degree bound. A set of blocking trails for an f-matching M is a maximal collection $$\mathcal{A}$$ of edge-disjoint augmenting trails such that $$M\bigoplus _{A\in {\mathcal{A}}} A $$ is a valid f-matching. Blocking trails are needed in efficient algorithms for maximum cardinality f-matching Huang and Pettie (Algorithmica 84(7): 1952–1992, 2022), maximum weight f-factors/matchings by scaling Duan et al. (In: Proceedings of the 47th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2020), Vol. 168 of LIPIcs, 41:1-41:17, 2020; Gabow (A weight-scaling algorithm for f-factors of multigraphs. arXiv:2010.01102 , 2020), and approximate maximum weight f-factors and f-edge covers Huang and Pettie (2022). Since these algorithms find many sets of blocking trails, the time to find blocking trails is a dominant factor in the running time. Our blocking trail algorithm runs in linear time O(m). In independent work and using a different approach, Huang and Pettie (2022) present a blocking trails algorithm using time $$O(m\alpha (m,n))$$ . As examples of the time bounds for the above applications, an approximate maximum weight f-factor is found in time $$O(m\,\alpha (m,n))$$ using Huang and Pettie (2022), and our algorithm eliminates the factor $$\alpha (m,n)$$ . Similarly a maximum weight f-factor is found in time $$O(\sqrt{\Phi \log \Phi }\, m\,\alpha (m,n)\, \log (\Phi W))\,$$ using Huang and Pettie (2022) , ( $$\Phi =\sum _{v\in V} f(v)$$ , W the maximum edge weight) and our algorithm eliminates the $$\alpha (m,n)$$ factor, making the time within a factor $$\sqrt{\log {\Phi }}$$ of the bound for bipartite multigraphs. The technical difficulty for this work stems from the fact that a fixed vertex can occur many times in a given search. This does not occur in ordinary matching or in algorithms for maximum cardinality or maximum weight f-matching. These multiple occurrences can create a new variant of blossom, the “skew blossom”. Also they can make blossoms become “incomplete”, i.e., partially processed yet still relevant in future searches.
