This article explores the issue of continuity versus socio-cultural transformation in the Lower Oder region during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age (2300–2000 BCE). An integrated analysis of material culture, settlement patterns, and environmental data highlights the complexity of cultural dynamics in this area. Elements of the Corded Ware Culture (CWC), the Bell Beaker phenomenon (BB), and southern influences linked to the Proto-Únětice Culture (PÚC) have been identified; however, their interrelations cannot be reduced to a simple chronological succession. Particular attention is given to ceramic forms and flint daggers, which reflect local adaptations of the cultural “packages” characteristic of the BB phenomenon, alongside the persistence of CWC traditions. Moreover, palynological evidence provides insights into landscape use and subsistence strategies during this transitional period. The study argues that, rather than undergoing an abrupt cultural rupture, the region experienced a gradual, multifaceted transformation marked by considerable microregional diversity.

This paper examines the economic activities of Corded Ware Culture (CWC) communities in the region of Schleswig-Holstein (SH), Germany. It contextualises them within the concept of taskscapes as well as current discussions on mobility and migration. As a novel approach, it considers whether the spatial variation in battle axe deposition strategies – graves predominating in the west, and isolated finds in the east – may reflect the practices of mobile groups with distinct taskscapes, rather than entirely separate or differently behaving populations, as previously suggested. It is argued that the western part of SH functioned as a ritual core in a long durée, while the eastern regions functioned as economic zones. The known settlements take a position between the ritual and economic zones. The argument is made that the human groups were not static; instead, they continuously formed new and flexible social configurations. Ultimately, this mobile and dynamic spatial system is interpreted as a catalyst for the integration of individuals from diverse backgrounds, giving tangible form to the migrations associated with the CWC phenomenon.

This article reflects on developments in Corded Ware-related material and research in the eastern Baltic Sea area (Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, north-western Russia). It builds upon a manuscript on the Corded Ware phenomenon in the eastern Baltic, completed nearly 15 years ago. Intended as the first modern review of the topic, this paper was not published at that time. Although now partially outdated due to the passage of time, it nonetheless offers a valuable overview of how the Corded Ware complex was perceived and studied in the early 2010s. Together with the supplementary commentaries appended to the original text, the article provides basic information about the Corded Ware phenomenon in the eastern Baltic and documents changes and an intensification of research on the 3rd millennium BC that occurred during the 2010s and early 2020s.

The earliest manifestation of funerary monumentality in Central Europe is represented by long barrows from the 4th millennium BC. The latest discoveries suggest that it was the long barrows that initiated the tradition of shaping ritual landscapes. Besides their funerary function, these monuments also served as ancestral shrines. Current research indicates the existence of approximately a thousand-year hiatus in the use of these sacred places in Bohemia. Secondary burials associated with the Corded Ware and Únětice Cultures have been recorded in long barrows. Similar sequences can also be observed in other sites where evidence of long barrows is currently not secure. Beaker cultures of the 3rd millennium BC are represented primarily by funerary monuments in the form of round barrows. This form of funerary monuments did not evolve from the long barrows. On the contrary, it represents a new phenomenon originating from the North Pontic/Caspian region, associated with the Yamna Culture.

The paper focuses on the influence of the Corded Ware culture barrow landscape on the rise of barrow building among Trzciniec Cultural circle communities. It presents a research thesis that explains the mechanisms of the trans-cultural and “timeless” impact of “Corded” mounds, which formed part of the cultural landscape of east-central European uplands in the 2nd millennium BC. The barrows of both cultures certainly combined several functions. They were burial grounds not only where ancestors lay, but also boundary markers defining the familiar area. “Corded Ware” monuments and their arrangements were a source of inspiration and imitation for “Trzciniec” arrivals. The revival of kurgan building by these newcomers and their use of earthen mounds as instruments for asserting their rights to a specific territory, can be viewed a sort of “posthumous heritage” left behind by Corded Ware communities.

The article presents materials from the glass-production workshop of the Hunnic times found near Komariv on the middle Dnister, which was the only such workshop on the territory of European Barbaricum. In 2021, we investigated a buried structure, where remains of mostly semi-finished glass products, production waste, and finished vessels were found. Fragments of Cherniakhiv culture wheel-made pottery and hand-made vessels; Roman amphorae; coins; fibulae; a mirror; an arrowhead, etc. also come from the building. The nature of the glass finds indicates that the structure, dated to the mid-5th century AD, was associated with glass production. The workshop, built in the same period as a building on a stone foundation, could have formed a single complex. The finds and the object’s dating are evidence that glass processing was practiced also in the Hunnic times in the Cherniakhiv culture.

The article presents materials related to the existence of Tyras in the late Roman period. Based on the available data, it is assumed that there were two phases in the existence of the city in Late Antiquity. In the first phase (second half of the 3rd to the third quarter of the 4th century AD), life in the city was restored after the barbarian raids. The Goths became the main military and political force in the steppe area of the Northwestern Black Sea region. Tyras was still receiving imported goods. However, its life was completely included in the orbit of barbarian interests. Cherniakhiv-tradition artefacts appeared in their material culture. Tyras was also receiving imported goods from Asia Minor, the Bosporus, Greece, and the Danube region. Amphoras of the Gaza type were imported in small quantities. In the second phase (last quarter of the 4th to the beginning of the 5th century AD), Tyras was still inhabited by the people who had not left the city during the Hun invasion. A few dishes of the Late Roman C / Phocaean Red Slip Ware group were delivered there, and glass dishes of Middle Eastern production and lamps with Christian symbols were used. Eastern imperial coins were in circulation. It is not known how the relations of the inhabitants of Tyras with the Huns developed. Obviously, the population was small and soon left the city forever.

The original promise of the internet was that it could have served as a tool whereby the general public could access, a single mouse-click away, unlimited amounts of reliable open access archaeological information supplied by academia or the museum world. This vision is in practice frustrated by the current form of that resource. Since changes that started taking place from 2015, the internet has increasingly been developing primarily as a commercial tool of modern capitalist trade. The casual searcher for information on a large range of archaeological phenomena will therefore primarily be faced with page after page of adverts offering examples of archaeological artefacts for sale and texts about their private collection.

The researchers have been focused increasingly on war crime archaeology in recent years, e.g. the most significant until now scientific and logistic achievements which were archaeological-exhumation works carried out 30 years ago, related to searching for mass hidden graves of Polish officers, policemen and other civil servants murdered in spring of 1940 by NKVD in Katyn, Kharkiv and Mednoye. These were the first survey researches performed abroad on such a huge scale by Polish archaeologists. Obtained information concerning exact burial locations, the number of victims, burial ground sizes and final identification of the method and murder weapon which contributed to confirmation, verification and completion of our knowledge included in documents concerning the truth of The Katyn Massacre. Experience gained and excavation methodology of those mass graves exploration was presented and reported in detail in numerous publications (Głosek 1995; 2001; 2011; 2021; Kola 1995; 1996; 1998; 2001; 2005; 2021; Młodziejowski 1995) outlining cognitive possibilities and research directions for future studies and challenges. One of the most important tasks was the victims identification which was possible thanks to objects found with the bodies. This article objective is to present new obtained knowledge, using particular types of objects (personal movable property) and their systematization. Moreover, the article authoress, also working on the restoration of these objects and deciphering inscriptions placed on them, wanted to indicate particular object groups significance in the victims identification.

This article presents the literature referring to the striped flint mine in Krzemionki Opatowskie published within the first few years after the discovery of the site until 1939. The exceptional significance of the mine in Krzemionki inspired many scholars and authors of both scientific as well as popular-scientific texts. Information about this prehistoric mine also appeared in articles related to disciplines of science other than archaeology, as well as in the general press and a sightseeing guide.
