Background : In-depth interviews have long been recognized as a central method in user experience (UX) and design research, providing access to users’ perceptions, reasoning, and contextualized experiences. Unlike surveys or behavioral data, interviews reveal how users construct meaning, shift perspectives, and integrate emotions into their experiences. However, the analysis of interview data remains labor-intensive and highly dependent on manual coding, often resulting in inconsistencies and limited scalability. Conventional methods such as grounded theory and thematic analysis capture themes and concepts but struggle to structurally represent cognitive transitions over time. Recent advances in natural language processing (NLP), embeddings, and clustering offer new opportunities, yet these methods are mostly optimized for short or semi-structured text. Their application to lengthy, layered interview narratives remains limited. To address these challenges, this study introduces an automated framework that segments interview data into cognitive units and visualizes reasoning flows to support more consistent and scalable qualitative analysis.
Methods : We developed a Python-based analytical procedure consisting of four steps: semantic unit segmentation, clustering, cognitive tagging, and visualization. Six cognitive tags were defined: Situational Awareness, Conceptual Clarification, Strategic Application, Reflection & Insight, Perspective Shift, and Constraints & Limitations. A supervised classifier trained in manually labeled utterances automated the tagging process. Visualization tools such as Sankey diagrams and heatmaps were used to illustrate cognitive transitions and centralities. Data collection comprised seven in-depth interviews with UX designers, product managers, and data scientists, resulting in 9.5 hours of recorded material and approximately 110,000 characters of transcribed content.
Results : Applying the automated procedure to a total of 1,041 utterances demonstrated that interview data can be quantitatively structured and analyzed along temporal flows and transition patterns. Sankey diagrams and centrality analyses revealed recurring cognitive transitions and key nodes, allowing the structural characteristics of reasoning flows—often difficult to capture through manual coding—to be objectively identified. These findings highlight the potential of analyzing long-form qualitative interviews in a consistent and reproducible manner.
Conclusions : This study proposes an automated framework for structurally quantifying and visualizing interview data. Rather than merely classifying types of reasoning, the approach expresses utterance-level transitions and flows through quantitative metrics and visual maps, thereby complementing the subjectivity and limitations of traditional qualitative analysis. Implemented entirely with open-source Python tools, the method can be adopted without advanced technical resources and offers a pathway toward the standardization and scalability of qualitative analysis in UX and design research.

Background : With the rapid aging of rural populations, senior houses play an increasingly important role in delivering semi-independent care. However, many lack structured service systems, resulting in unmet user needs. This study aims to explore how universal design (UD) theory can inform the development of a service design guideline, focusing on the context of rural senior houses in Anhui, China, in order to address these gaps that support safe, accessible, and dignified living environments for elderly users.
Methods : The study employed a mixed-method approach. First, 20 service elements relevant to daily life in rural senior houses were identified through service blueprinting and literature review. These were then evaluated through expert consultation using the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) method and mapped against the seven universal design principles (P1–P7). To assess user perception and to prioritize service improvement, a Kano model-based questionnaire was conducted among residents and caregivers. The findings were analyzed to categorize service attributes and to guide practical recommendations for design enhancement.
Results : The integration of the Kano model with CVR evaluation revealed significant differences in how users perceive various service elements. Several “Must-be” and “One-dimensional” attributes emerged, indicating essential baseline services versus optional offerings. The mapping with UD principles highlighted priority areas where accessibility and usability could be improved. Findings suggest that strategic alignment of UD with service design enables more dignified, effective care delivery in rural settings and supports informed decision-making for resource-limited senior house operators.
Conclusions : This research bridges universal design methods with practical elderly care needs, contextualized within rural senior houses in Anhui, China, and offers an exploratory guideline derived from a limited case study. The study helps providers to prioritize interventions under limited resources and to improve the overall service experience. Future studies should focus on validation through long-term field testing and explore interdisciplinary and technological enhancements.

Background : Naturalness has long been defined in contrast to artificiality across philosophical, environmental-ethical, and Korean aesthetic traditions. Yet in contemporary digital environments, the notion of naturalness must be reconsidered in cognitive and perceptual terms. Despite their artificial origins, design artifacts are often experienced as natural, a phenomenon not fully explained by traditional perspectives.
Methods : This study applies insights from processing fluency theory to design research. Processing fluency suggests that stimuli processed with ease are often judged as more pleasing, a response closely associated with the perception of naturalness. By translating this framework into the context of design, the study establishes a conceptual basis for understanding naturalness beyond its metaphysical or normative definitions.
Results : Naturalness can be understood in two complementary forms: perceptual naturalness, arising from unfelt fluency in effortless sensory processing, and conceptual naturalness, emerging from relative fluency in coherent meaning integration. Accordingly, two corresponding design strategies are proposed: enhancing perceptual fluency by reducing visual disruption and reinforcing conceptual fluency by strengthening contextual coherence, each illustrated through examples from UX/UI, product, and spatial design.
Conclusions : This paper reframes naturalness not as an abstract essence but as a cognitive and aesthetic response grounded in processing fluency theory. The study provides theoretical clarification for explaining experiences of naturalness in artificial contexts and proposes domain-sensitive strategies for design, thereby contributing to ongoing discussions in design research and practice.
