This research examines the visual representation of renewable energies in Spain’s rural landscapes, focusing on its portrayal in two acclaimed 2022 films, As Bestas and Alcarràs, as well as in Spanish media (2017-2022). Using an iconographic and comparative media analysis, the research identifies visual motifs like “Clean and Green” and “The Intruder”, reflecting polarized narratives. The study reveals a gap between media-driven, abstract portrayals and the socio-economic tensions depicted in cinema. It advocates for an equitable and participatory approach to renewable energy transitions by highlighting the invisibility of economic power and the lack of local participation.

From the 20th century, the division between sciences and art became more pronounced, as brilliantly highlighted by Charles Percy Snow. The two realms – as he called them – drifted apart due to the apparent differences in their languages, creating significant limitations for societal progress. Today, Snow’s concerns remain relevant and are of great interest to both artistic and scientific communities. Moreover, science has become fragmented into various branches. In response to this division, many art movements have attempted to bridge the gap by focusing on specific scientific fields (e.g., physics and biology). However, this has left gaps in exploring the connection between art and other scientific disciplines. Here, we present Chem-Art, a developing artistic movement that uses methods – either heuristic or strictly scientific – to explore the relationship between art and chemistry. Thanks to initiatives such as SAGacia (Smart), which foster dialogue between these two disciplines in mutually meaningful ways, we aim to reduce this division.

This research aims to map the practices surrounding the collection of media art in Portuguese museums, with a particular focus on the preservation strategies employed by relevant institutions. At the core of the study is a critical analysis of data gathered through an online survey, completed by the following institutions: Museu da Bienal de Cerveira, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Centro de Arte Oliva, Coleção de Arte Contemporânea do Estado, and Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado. The findings indicate a significant shortage of specialized conservators in Portugal, along with a lack of standardized terminology in the preservation of media art. The brevity of the sample suggests a lack of transparency from the institutions and limited public access to digital documentation concerning our object of study. Nonetheless, this sample provides valuable insight into current practises that typically remain inaccessible to the public.

Through critical analysis, this paper examines the antithetic and analogous dynamics between organic and synthetic memory within Eduardo Kac’s 1997 bio artwork Time Capsule and M. Eifler’s 2020 AI artwork Prosthetic Memory. Kac and Eifler’s use of prosthetics and digital networks substitutes the human body for a dematerialized human presence. This unique combination situates new media art history as a fixture of posthuman change, incorporating corporeality, migration and augmentation. A comparative analysis between Time Capsule and Prosthetic Memory reveals mutual outcomes in which body and memory become issues of corporeality, migration impacts bodies and technology, and augmentation drives the evolution of technology and memory. Consequently, memory becomes the binding agent throughout an expanding transdisciplinary and multifaceted approach to art history. By examining the connections between bio art and AI art, we progressively trace memory’s evolutionary consequences through action, media and material. Time Capsule and Prosthetic Memory present examples of a holistic transformation of digital human memory centring on the body and mind. The issues presented in our analysis of these artworks, such as augmentation, corporeality and migration, highlight how new media art can shift the conversation about human evolution and present active examples of networks archiving the growing indivisibility of organic life and virtual data.

In 1983, the Centre Georges Pompidou invited Jean-François Lyotard, the prominent theorist of postmodernism, to organize an exhibition at the Centre de Création Industrielle. The exhibition Les Immatériaux examines the intersection of philosophical practice and curatorial craft. This article contends that Les Immatériaux should be regarded not just as an exhibition but as an artistic installation. According to Juliane Rebentisch, the key characteristics of an art installation are theatricality, intermediality and site-specificity, all of which are present in Les Immatériaux. This positions Lyotard as both an artist-curator and a philosopher-curator, thus embodying Nietzsche’s concept of the philosopher-artist. The philosopher-artist empowers life and opens up new possibilities. Similarly, the philosopher-curator-artist creates a reflective space that fosters the development of new values.

This paper describes a series of experimental set-ups in Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, the Dutch National Science Museum in Leiden, dedicated to probing the affects of scientific objects. These set-ups are part of an interdisciplinary research project centring around the issue of how to present and engage with immaterial or complex science technologies. This research combines two fields of expertise: curatorial practice in a science museum and scholarship in dramaturgy and scenography. It probes the potential of affect, understood as the capacity to affect and to be affected, while finding inspiration in new materialist theory. By using dialogue next to discursive argumentation, the paper discusses some questions and issues that were raised by these experimental set-ups and proposes that a focus on affect and materiality – thinginess, in brief – can inspire the collection and presentation of scientific objects. Attending to thinginess can expand the curatorial agenda and asks for scenographic strategies to support this.
