Abstract One of the challenges Public Service Media institutions face today is how to translate normative values such as universality and diversity into measurable and tangible content in an attempt to realize their “public value”. This contribution shows how the communicative functions of humor can help create public value by introducing audiences to minorities. As a case in point, we analyzed Taboe, a humorous human-interest program about minorities including, amongst others, the visually impaired and the obese, broadcast by Flemish public broadcaster VRT in 2018. Based on in-depth interviews with program makers and participants and a qualitative content analysis of the program, the study found that humor provided the program with a positive, funny yet emotional tone of voice that attracted and kept the audience’s attention. By giving various minorities an active voice, Taboe introduced mainstream audiences to the their perspective, encouraging increased knowledge and understanding and, in turn, tolerance of, and acceptance towards, the minority groups represented.

Abstract The present study investigated the influence of related and unrelated emotions on judgments about a news article. An experimental study was designed to manipulate both the relatedness of an elicited emotion (i. e., anger) to the news article and processing depth. Following mood and emotion effects theory, related anger was expected to have a stronger effect on judgments about the media message than unrelated anger. Processing depth was expected to moderate this effect. The results showed a main effect of relatedness and a main effect of processing depth, but the interaction effect was not found. Implications of the findings for understanding how emotions influence the processing of media stimuli are discussed.

Abstract For five Dutch public information campaigns, this study assessed whether interpersonal communication mediated the effects of exposure (to TV, radio, or online banners) on five persuasive outcomes: awareness, knowledge, attitude, intention, and self-reported behavior. Structural equation modeling was used to test 23 models relating exposure to one of these outcome variables. Few direct effects of media exposure were found (for online banners, TV, and radio in, respectively, one, four, and seven of the 23 models). In contrast, results revealed that interpersonal communication had direct effects on the outcomes in 17 of the 23 models. Moreover, indirect effects of media exposure via interpersonal communication were found for online banner, TV, and radio exposure in, respectively, eight, nine, and ten models. These results indicate that interpersonal communication plays an important role in explaining media exposure persuasive effects and should be taken into account in the development and evaluation of public information campaigns.

The surging of photovoltaics has witnessed the boost of numerous fascinating approaches to the enhancement of power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of the devices. For the search of new metal-halide CZTS solar cell materials, tolerance factors are calculated from the ionic radius of each site and are often utilized as the critical factors to expect the materials forming CZTS structure. Significant progress in photovoltaic conversion of solar energy can be achieved by new technological approaches that will improve the efficiency of solar cells and make them appropriate for mass production. The paper presents the numerical analysis on design of high performance CSTZ solar cells with the help of MATLAB programming. The performance reliance on physical properties is estimated, together with the layer thickness, carrier density, defect density and interface defect density. The best possible the layer thickness and carrier density were originated in this study. The defect density in the absorber would be controlled for reducing the recombination. The interface between the layer of absorber and the layer of buffer is essential for the performance of that solar cell. The interface defect density is embarrassed to accomplish enviable conversion efficiency. The results confirm that the experimental works could be met with the theoretical analysis in this paper.
