Abstract This study focuses on how drug addicts experience vulnerability in their family relationships and aims to reveal the effect of these relationships on the addiction process from a qualitative perspective. Interviews were conducted with 72 individuals (8 women, 64 men) who were on probation for drug use disorders and related crimes in Antalya, Türkiye. According to the findings, the place where the family lived, the criminal and drug addiction history of the parents, unconscious parental attitudes and indifferent parents at home, lack of warm relationships or any bond in the family environment, loneliness, abandonment, the presence of broken families and remarried parents had an impact on the participants’ relationship with drugs. The study reveals that while the family may contribute to the onset of the problem, it also holds an influential role in the potential treatment and recovery process.

Abstract What drives international news coverage of contentious events? While research on news media has predominantly focused on local and national coverage, we know less about how their coverage differs from international newswires. The authors compare event reporting for protests, strikes, and disruption across two contentious events datasets— The World Handbook of Political Indicators IV ( WHIV ) and the Documentation and Analysis of Protest Events in the Federal Republic of Germany ( PRODAT )—that cover Germany 1991–2002 to understand how international media make these choices. They were more likely to cover contentious events when these received front-page national newspaper coverage or were tied to prominent events (e.g., national elections). International media covered contentious events more often when it was simultaneously reporting about more routine politics events. Further, Granger-causality models show that increased international coverage led to future international newswire attention, pointing to a news cascade. The findings suggest that domestic and international news routines overlap, but international news media routines focus more on prominence. This supports three different ideas about the relationship between national and international news: a “mirroring” process informed by signals of prominence; distinctive news markets; and contentiousness that gains media access via size, disruptiveness, or arrests.

Abstract During the Arab Spring, it has already been well-observed that the Arab monarchies possess stabilization capacity. This article identifies it as not only a regional, but also a confessional factor that all Islamic monarchies have a stabilizing effect on the socio-political dynamics. Moreover, in Islamic monarchies, the share of the young comes out more as a supporting rather than a destabilizing factor, while it is well-known that it leads to a growth of socio-political destabilization in the majority of other countries of the world. The authors explain these results by the fact that the monarchies of the MENA region, to a large extent, use specific aspects of Islamic doctrine in their narrations and socio-political practices which refer to the cultural, social and political ideals of Islamic societies. The mechanism observed is the following: MENA monarchies deprive the Islamic opposition of a predominant part of their supporters, while it is common knowledge that the youth in Muslim states are the main target of Islamist movements’ recruitment.

Abstract This article examines the spatial footprints of anthropogenic emissions and infrastructures in Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal, in relation to the social composition of its parishes. By analysing air quality, electrical nightlight radiance, building ages, and road infrastructures, the research uncovers the multiple associations between these physical traces and the economic and cultural composition of the resident population. Utilizing data coming from satellite imagery, open-access data, and the 2021 Portuguese census, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Mixed Classification (MC) were conducted to spatially delineate these relationships. The findings introduce the concept of “emplaced capital footprints”, highlighting seven clusters manifesting the objectification of multiple capital competences within the physical space.

Abstract This article examines the curious popularity of Donald Trump in India by investigating pivotal events of Indian socio-political history and the embedded yet imperceptible tenets of Indian culture. The central question of this article is thus, what are the cultural, economic, and socio-political factors that explain the peculiar popularity of Trump among specific sections of the Indian nationalist populace? The article also reveals the processes that have nurtured affinity for populist leadership in India since the country’s independence. It documents why Hindu nationalists have a positive image of Trump. The analysis reveals a dialectical relationship between the demand for strong leadership and how it apparently guarantees individual freedom in India. Indians have previously displayed affinity for populist leaders both in their country and abroad – this article demonstrates how these ambivalences have come to exist among Hindu nationalists wherein they support Indian and foreign populists simultaneously.

Abstract Do firm stances against crime, up to a level at which they disregard Human Rights, overflow the sphere of crime control and associate with a preference against democracy? This study determines whether victimization of crime encourages support for the death penalty, the desire to own a firearm, and broader authoritarian political attitudes. The hypothesis is tested in Latin America using the LAPOP (2018/2019) database in 17 countries. Three sets of indicators are observed in the logistic models: a) dependent variables (desire to own a firearm, support for the death penalty, perception of democracy as the best form of government, support for a coup in the case of high crime, satisfaction with democracy, and trust in institutions); b) independent variables (victimization by crime); and c) control variables (waiting time for police response, and sociodemographic factors). Although no significant effects were found on democracy as the best form of government, victimization increases the likelihood of wanting a firearm, favoring the death penalty, and supporting coups, while it reduces the satisfaction with democracy and trust in institutions. Therefore, the results confirm that crime not only favors public support for harsh measures to control it but also weakens democracy and its institutions.

Abstract The socialization of young men can make a difference in social change in patriarchal societies such as Pakistan. This research applies Nancy Chodorow’s (1978) Object Relations Theory to analyze the learning of gender roles for young men. Key informants comprised 30 young men aged 18–30 from mainstream society and semi-structured interviews were carried out in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. The key research objectives were to explore young men’s ideas about socialization in Pakistani culture and how they learn the gender-specific roles. The results of this study reveal that from the age of 8 to 17, boys learn their gender roles and masculine standards. It argues that a cohesive and integrated approach is needed through community, parents, and school-based programs where young men can be socialized to contribute positively to a violence-free, risk-free, equitable society and innovative thinking is needed to socialize young men.

Abstract This article contains process-oriented research which historically traces the development and structure of patronage in Ibadan, Nigeria, from the pre-colonial epoch to the colonial era. Ibadan started up first as a camp of marauders and later as a military settlement after the collapse of the Oyo Empire, Ibadan thereafter emerged as a military empire with sovereignty over a large spectrum of Yorubaland by the end of the 19th Century. Ibadan developed a unique patronage structure based on the babaogun clientelistic system. The babaogun system entailed a network of military warlords who had clients who provided military and civil services in exchange for protection. The indirect rule introduced by the British integrated the babaogun system into governance, equipping the chiefs with economic and coercive powers, which sustained a transformed clientelistic system that was only subverted by the educated and economic elite by the 1950s in preparation for independence. Therefore, the foundation of the contemporary patronage system in Ibadan in particular and Nigeria in general could be traced to the political economy of colonial patronage and the succeeding neo-colonial system. Using archival methods, this article provides the context of the process of patronage in pre-colonial and colonial Ibadan.

Abstract Environmental movements are a special social movement against environmental injustice, as well as a political conflict regarding environmental issues. To understand the motivation to participate in environmental movements, it is necessary to explore the role of governments in environmental management. Using the cross-sectional data from the China General Social Survey (CGSS) in 2013, the author estimates the associations between participation in environmental movements and satisfaction with governments in environmental management. Results show that participation in environmental movements is not associated with individual satisfaction with the central government but is significantly associated with individual satisfaction with the local government when demographic and socioeconomic characteristics are adjusted in models. This finding suggests that public satisfaction and trust in local governments’ environmental governance can promote the public to participate in environmental protection activities. This study also reflects that Chinese individuals believe the local governments can undertake the responsibility of environmental management, suggesting that the central and local governments reach a consensus on environmental management in China.
