This article tells the story of a colonial documentary film that spanned the years of the late Third Republic and Vichy. The film is La France est un empire, written and directed by the adventure novelist Jean d’Agraives. The article is based on an unusually complete dossier of archival information, pieced together from both film and manuscript archives, that allows us to trace the life of the film from the initial idea to the production and ultimate reception of the film. This film and the archival record surrounding it contain clues to some of the broader questions that continue to motivate Vichy historiography: explaining the apparent internal paradoxes inherent in choices that individuals made during the Second World War in France. The article seeks to uncover the values that would explain a story that does not map neatly onto traditional conceptions of Right and Left, or of collaboration and resistance. This particular story involves a colonial film that found favor with both republican and authorita...

Abstract This article examines the emergence of commercial establishments catering primarily if not exclusively to lesbians and/or gay men in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century Paris. Lesbian restaurants came first, developing as an offshoot of a highly evolved prostitutional subculture in Montmartre. By the first decade of the twentieth century, the neighborhood boasted gay as well as lesbian bars, and there was considerable contact and crossover between the two queer clienteles. Montmartre’s bars have left traces in police archives, journalism, literature, and the visual arts, making it possible to map and describe them. I also use fiscal and judicial archives for the first time to paint a fuller picture of these businesses, and I follow the owners through vital, notarial, and criminal records, tracing a group portrait of these pioneering lesbian and gay entrepreneurs. While their contribution has been unrecognized, their businesses, no less than the better-known bohemian cabarets and giant dance halls, helped transform Montmartre into Gay Paree, the capital of delinquent pleasure.RésuméCet article décrit l’émergence d’établissements commerciaux destinés surtout sinon exclusivement aux homosexuel(le)s à Paris à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle.

While the fraught history of civil unrest in France’s disadvantaged suburbs casts them as sites of inherent violence and crime, recent cultural texts featuring the banlieues propose alternative discourses that contest cliches of disorder and delinquency. This article presents and analyzes visual performances of masculinity in Algerian-born photographer Mohamed Bourouissa’s series of photographic tableaux entitled Peripherique (2005–2009). I argue that the staged images reconfigure visual signifiers from media discourse on the banlieues to “decline” (Rosello 1998) stereotypes about les jeunes de banlieues. Presenting internal contradictions to binary gender categories, the photographs destabilize the idea of an innate, aggressive masculinity that drives social violence in the banlieues. Rather, they present heteronormative masculinity as a succession of performances that require peer adjudication to preserve the illusion of pre-discursivity. Peripherique thus reframes masculine performativity in the banlie...

Abstract The figure of the champion is a constant of the written press in France. Arecurring feature of the sports columns, it cannot, however, be comprehendedexclusively through the medium of sporting results. The diversityof the forms of analysis inspired by the champion underscores the readinessof editors to lend wider significance to that which may appear at firstblush to be simply a performance or feat. This article examines the formsinvolved in this process and the societal role of the champion in a periodwhen sport in France took on new significance. The Communist pressplayed a particular role in orchestrating the visibility of sport and theportrayal of the champion. The range of publications the Communist pressoffered by means of a general news publication (L’Humanité), a sportspecificpaper (Miroir Sprint), and a publication aimed at a youngeraudience (Nous les garçons et les filles), generated a unique spectrum ofanalysis. These outlets used sport as a discursive apparatus with a politicalfunction. As the symbol of the value of one system over another, or as ameans of political denunciation, the champion must also be admired forthe values he is considered to embody and to which all can relate. Ultimately, the Communist press offers an important means of understandingthe transformations of French society as a result of its wide readership, andthe time period examined is significant as the corpus evolves qualitativelyand quantitatively. The Communist press, through its coverage of sportingchampions, constructs a discourse one of whose principal purposes is thereinforcing of readers’ adhesion to a particular model of social organization.RésuméLa figure du champion est une constante de la presse écrite en France.
