Today there are many global volunteer opportunities for nurses and student nurses. While the intentions of volunteers may be good, the result may be harmful to the volunteer and/or the host, creating a situation of moral distress. An ethical code provides guidance and promotes moral agency. We discuss elements of the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics with Interpretive Statements and apply them to the experience of global volunteering through a case study approach.

Substance use disorder is a serious problem in nursing that is often invisible and not well understood or well handled. It tears at the social contract between nursing and society and disrupts the trust so essential to that contract. The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics contains clear language about a nurse's duty to take action to protect patients and to ensure the impaired nurse gets assistance. Specific interpretive statements provide useful guidance in dealing with this problem.

The current study evaluated the effectiveness of a workshop designed to provide nurses (n = 6) with the means to improve their situation awareness. The nurses participated in a full-day workshop in which their situation awareness performance was measured before and after using the Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique. Following the workshop, nurses demonstrated improvement in their perception of relevant cues, comprehension of what the combination of cues means, and projection of the patient's future status. The implications of situation awareness education for health-care professionals are discussed.

New nurse turnover costs organizations in the United States an estimated $1.4 billion to $2.9 billion per year (Meyer, Shatto, Delicath, & von der Lancken, 2017; Ulrich et al., 2010). Retention of graduate nurses can decrease costs, combat nursing shortages, and improve patient outcomes. Despite the increase in prevalence of nurse residency programs, new nurses are leaving their first positions at alarming rates. The purpose of this literature review is to examine the factors that affect graduate nurse transition to practice. Findings indicate that a supportive environment free from bullying, a positive preceptor experience, and self-confidence were keys to retaining new graduate nurses.

This article presents an evaluation of Margaret Newman's theory of health as expanding consciousness, through a literature review, to determine its usefulness for nursing practice and research. The evaluation illustrates that Newman's theory is valuable for guiding various aspects of nursing practice, education, and research. However, its use had been limited to spiritual, psychological, and social aspects of nursing care and needs to be further evaluated for its significance in acute care settings. Most of the studies that use Newman's theory are from the past, with limited studies conducted in recent years, indicating the need for further research.

This article details the use of an online survey tool to obtain information from nurse faculty, including the data collection process, the survey responses by nurse faculty, and the advantages and barriers of online data collection. The survey response rate indicates that online data collection is a valuable tool for nurse researchers.

The continuous and rapid evolution of medical technology and the complexity of delivering person-centered care in the 21st century calls for collaboration among health care professionals. Global health now "involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-clinical care" (Koplan et al., 2009, p. 1995). The need for mental health practitioners to work in interprofessional contexts requires graduate and postgraduate programs to incorporate interprofessional education into their student training. This article focuses on an approach to interprofessional education for students in mental health nursing and counseling.

Historically, the majority of nurses have been employed by hospitals. However, the changing landscape of health care has seen a shift to other areas of practice. Nursing graduates must be prepared to work collaboratively with a shared vision that is patientcentered and team-oriented. To better prepare students for collaborative practice, a School of Nursing developed a course for senior level nursing students that included a clinical experience within a student-run free clinic. Nursing students were able to enhance clinic services by providing health screening, patient navigation, patient education, health coaching, and patient follow-up.

Reflective practice describes the cyclical interaction of learning and experience. Although the concept has been enhanced during the 20th century, the Chinese philosopher and educator Confucius indicated that wisdom is gained by reflection. Nurses can enhance their practice and gain professional satisfaction by developing the skills needed for reflective practice. Reflection can occur in the moment as well as after an event. To develop the skills needed for reflective practice, the nurse must first make a commitment to reflection. Reflection can lead to increased confidence, which allows nurses to use their voice to question authority.
