People on the MoveReligion, Film and Migration Daria Pezzoli-Olgiati (bio) Contested images addressing migration policies In August 2018 an Italian sculptor placed a full-scale reproduction of the Vatican Pietá on a fishing boat off the coast of the small island of Lampedusa, an immigration entrance point for thousands of people in search of shelter and a better future in Europe. Fabio Viale’s Pietá senza Cristo is not an exact copy of the iconic work by Michelangelo since, as the name indicates, the body of Christ is missing. Viale has used the absent Christ as an opportunity to reconceive the great sculpture by placing it in different settings. Viale’s marble sculpture was first exhibited in 2017 in an art gallery in Milan.1 Later, it was set up and photographed as part of a poster installation titled Lucky Ehi, in which the marble Pietá senza Cristo is presented with a naked man lying on Mary’s lap in the place of the dead Jesus. Ehi, the man at the center of the photograph, is a refugee from Nigeria who crossed the Mediterranean Sea like many others to reach the land of his dreams, Italy. Conceived as an art installation, the poster was accompanied by an audio file narrating Ehi’s risky journey.2 Viale’s Pietá was then used off the coast of Lampedusa, in a further artistic action known as In mare la Pietá (The Pietá at Sea). In both works, Lucky Ehi and In mare la Pietá, the marble sculpture Pietá senza Cristo was put in conversation with migration in the Mediterranean; the iconic representation of the desperate mother holding the corpse of her son in her arms depicts, in the words of the artist, “rather [End Page 263] a synthesis of a dramatic historic moment.”3 For Viale, a floating, “empty” Pietá on the Mediterranean transforms a sculpture into a symbolic act of participation and empathy towards people crossing the sea. At the same time, this work can be understood as a message to the inhabitants of Europe, as a plea to question their attitudes towards refugees.4 Click for larger view View full resolution Figure 1. [Color figure can be viewed at wileyonlinelibrary.com] A few months later, at the 58th International Art Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia 2019, the Swiss artist Christoph Büchel presented the work Barca nostra (Our Boat) in an open air zone of the Arsenale, the location where the city of Venice used to produce its famous naval fleet and where today the Biennale takes place. The art work consists of the original wreck of a Lybian ship that sank on April 18, 2015, in the Sicilian Channel with at least 700 people on board. Pulling the ship—in fact, the grave of so many people—out of the sea and transporting it to the Venetian lagoon was received as a strong, controversial action. The shipwreck simultaneously depicted the fragility of the boat and human life, as well [End Page 264] as the fragility of the hope of its passengers. Presenting an empty tomb as a work of art, the piece challenged indifference (Fig. 1).5 These artistic elaborations on migration question both European policies regulating migration and individual attitudes towards an ongoing tragedy. Viale’s and Büchel’s sculptures evoke at once death and murder as well as grief and compassion; they denounce injustice and encourage participation; they provoke and comfort. They also blur places in a disturbing way: Michelangelo’s sculpture par excellence leaves the sacred walls of St. Peters and floats adrift in the Mediterranean Sea; the remains of a coffin-ship are fished out from the dark sea floor and displayed in a famous art exhibition. Controversial, the art works contest our imaginations by means of visual representation. By reframing our values and attitudes towards people on the move, they pose questions by making visible, from a new angle, what we witness every day. Both works of art refer to religious aspects: by looking at them audiences may recall the passion of Christ or...

Making a Way Out of No WayBlack Faith in Barry Jenkins’s If Beale Street Could Talk Joe Tolbert Jr. (bio) In Barry Jenkins’ 2018 film adaptation of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, we see two Black families’ daily struggle to live despite the unjust systems that permeated 1970s New York City. The film follows childhood friends-turned-lovers, Tish and Fonny, and how a false charge that puts Fonny in jail puts a strain on the news that they were going to have a baby. In the film, the viewers are held in the tension of the quotidian violence that Tish, Fonny, and their families face as they strategize ways to restore Fonny’s freedom with the possibility that is represented in their unborn child. We are held in the tension of the ways this country treats Black people who are trying to live in spite of this violence and the hopeful possibility that their child will not have to live through the injustice and violence that they have had to navigate. Although this film is not explicitly religious, it is this tension between the reality of injustice and the possibilities of freedom through the transformation of this country that this film shows the inner workings of Black faith. Beale Street and Black Faith Early on in the film, we find Tish and her family waiting for Fonny’s family to arrive, so that Tish can share the news about the coming child. Since this scene is the only explicitly religious scene in the film, I describe it in detail here. Once they arrive, it becomes clear that Mrs. Hunt and her daughters are very pious and devout Christians—“Holy Rollers” some would say. As Frank began to ask for updates about the well-being [End Page 302] of his child, the mother shares how she hopes his time in jail would lead him to salvation, and that sometimes she thinks that his being in jail was a part of God’s plan so he could think about his sins and surrender his soul to Jesus. As tension between Fonny’s parents rises, due to his mother’s faith and his dad’s hip 70s cool, Tish interrupts and tells them that their son is going to be a father. At the news, Frank tells Joe that they are about to go out and get drunk in celebration, and he reassures Tish that he is glad about the news. However, Mrs. Hunt, in self-righteous fashion, asks, “Who is going to take care of the baby?” Tish replied that as its parents, they would. Fonny’s father replied that it would definitely not be the holy ghost. Mrs. Hunt tells Tish that she doesn’t call the lust between her and Fonny love and that she knew she would ruin her son’s life. After quoting a scripture that touts purity and righteous living, she pronounces that since the baby was born in sin, the holy spirit was going to make it shrivel in her womb, but that her son would be forgiven (Fig. 1). [Color figure can be viewed at wileyonlinelibrary.com] To know the writing of James Baldwin is to encounter his critique of the church. His critique centered on the church’s inability to deal with the things of this world. In his view, the church was so concerned with controlling the body, keeping it “pure,” it didn’t handle the material evils [End Page 303] that Black people were forced to endure. This practice of religion leaves those material evils untouched. In Jenkins’ film adaptation, we see this in the character of Fonny’s mother Mrs. Hunt. What this scene shows is the ways that religion is weaponized in such a way that we can perpetuate the dominant culture’s ideologies against ourselves. In Mrs. Hunt, we see a woman that is so concerned with biblical notions of purity and sexual morality that she uses the rhetoric often used against unwed parents. Her language makes...

Souvenirs of the ApocalypseGuns as Authenticating Props Rachel Wagner (bio) Seventeen people died in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018. A week later Donald Trump blamed movies and video games for creating the violent culture that led to the shooting, saying: “I don’t know what this does to a young kid’s mind, somebody growing up and forming and looking at videos where people are just being blown away left and right ... the level of craziness and viciousness in the movies, I think we have to look at that too.”1 Trump’s remarks are in sync with the NRA’s take after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012. As a means of explaining the killings, Wayne LaPierre called the movie business “a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people.” He pointed to “blood-soaked slasher films like American Psycho and Natural Born Killers that are aired like propaganda loops.”2 And yet, in 2013 the NRA’s magazine The American Rifleman ran a story about the top ten “coolest gun movies.”3 Some of these, like The Alamo (1960), draw on Western themes and celebrate the survivor who uses his gun for masculine adventure. Others, like Terminator (1984) and Red Dawn (1984), imagine an alternate dystopic future in which guns are the only means to survive against hostile foes. Zombieland (2009) and Tremors (1990) stray into fantasy, imagining monstrous enemies that threaten all of civilization. The Road Warrior (1981) celebrates the violent vigilante, scraping out an existence in a dismal post-apocalyptic future. All celebrate the manly pluck of the shooter who knows when to kill and doesn’t hesitate. [End Page 310] These are films about winning with guns. Clearly, there is some inconsistency in the NRA’s views about movies and guns. Part of the problem is definitional: The way that one understands broad terms like “violence” and “media” largely shapes the outcome of one’s analysis. As David Trend points out in his book The Myth of Media Violence, it’s not much of a stretch to say that the Bible is a form of media that is “violent.” War monuments are “violent.” Films like Schindler’s List (1993) and Hotel Rwanda (2004) are “violent.” Even Disney’s The Lion King (1994) is “violent.”4 Media violence, Trend proposes, is “one of the most widely discussed yet least understood issues of our time.”5 In the United States, there are about 37,000 deaths per year from guns, and mass shootings happen at the rate of one or more per day.6 Violent media are not irrelevant in this dangerous equation, but they can hardly be seen as directly causative—especially if we can’t agree on what makes media “violent” in the first place. The issue is far too complex to boil down to a simple cause-and-effect arrangement. However, if we shift from conversations about broad categories like “media” and “violence,” we can ask more nuanced questions about what guns and violent movies might have in common. That is, what broader culture might they both participate in? I argue here that the gun can be viewed as a deadly prop in a mythological construct that is bigger than individual gun-owners, bigger than the movies they watch, and even bigger than the guns themselves. After introducing the cowboy apocalypse myth, I will turn to a consideration of the gun as a kind of quasi-sacramental self-authenticating prop, the material instantiation of the repeated filmic portrayal of a violent post-apocalyptic future yearned for by those who embrace the myth. Indeed, the gun can be viewed as a mode of violent mediation all by itself. The Cowboy Apocalypse In its hybrid form, what I call the “cowboy apocalypse” is a complete mythic story arc. It is about America’s beginnings, but it is also about the whole world’s imminent ending. Those who survive the violent transformation of the world will do so by a combination of grit, individualism, and violence—and often with the liberal use of guns. The cowboy...

Let Us Never Forget Bob Blundell (bio) In a secluded forest near the city of Krakow, a young sentry stood watch. Muted rays of sunlight filtered through the pines casting a pale light on the soldier, just a boy of 17. A tattered grey uniform sagged over his thin frame and the silver eagle on his helmet was faded to the color of dust. The emblem, denoting him as an infantryman in the army of the Third Reich, had once been a symbol of pride and honor. But those days had long since passed. Though it was early Spring, a biting wind whispered softly through the treetops, and he raised his collar and peered up into a morning sky turned murky grey. He felt the moist sting of snowflakes on his cheeks and closed his eyes, reflecting on more tranquil times. His mind began to drift and for a moment he could see his loving mother's face, the noble lines of age etched above her lips, and the gentle creases beneath deep azure eyes. But soon the image faded, and he returned to this place and time. He wiped a smudge from his watch and stared pensively back toward the camp below him, watching the soldiers scurry about in preparation. Soon the trains would come, and the madness would begin. A tall SS colonel, hardened by years of combat in north Africa, strutted from the comforting warmth of his barracks and quietly surveyed the expanse of rail tracks stretching to the south. He lit a cigarette with his right hand and exhaled, sending a blue plume of smoke drifting into the frigid air. His left arm dangled uselessly at his side and a serpentine scar snaked along the length of his jaw. [End Page 349] Both were remnants of his service to the cause. He had been selected for this commission because he had spent his life devoted to the fatherland. But more important, there was a harsh coldness in his heart that suited this task well. Thin strands of ice clung to the barbed wire stretching around the camp, and he seemed to regard this curiously. He stood in the early morning mist, pacing and smoking his cigarette, then tossed it to the ground and began to shout orders to the troops. The young soldier and his comrades moved to their assigned positions, and within minutes the ground began to rumble, and the mechanical grind of the locomotive pierced the air as it lumbered toward the camp. Suddenly the face of the engine broke through a silver fog hovering over the tracks, and it crept toward them slowly like a great beast. It's bones creaked as its weight was absorbed by the steel rails, and when it finally came to a stop, it uttered a loud sigh like a mournful mother. The soldiers quickly began their business of unloading the cargo as terrified screams filtered through the tired wooden slats of the cars. The victims, men, women, and children poured through the narrow doors and some stumbled to the icy ground to be trampled by those behind them. The officer watched this melee with no emotion, then strutted to the entrance of the camp and waited while the people were herded into two lines. As the innocents marched past him, he studied them carefully as a farmer would view livestock for purchase. The strongest would be chosen for a slow death through starvation, and disease. The rest would be ushered into the buildings for disposal. The first group of women and children were herded into the courtyard by guards brandishing rifles with bayonets. The wet steel of the blades glistened like teeth in the morning mist, and the terrified shrieks of frightened children filled the air. After they had been carefully counted, they were ordered to remove their clothing. They slowly disrobed, dropping their garments to the snow, and as their bodies were exposed, the soldiers laughed, shouting taunts and jeers. The women huddled against one another, covering their breasts, and shivered under an icy mist that fell like tears from the sky. [End Page 350] Towels and bars of soap were distributed to some, and they...

Resurrection, Remediation, and Religious Fundamentalism in Contemporary Indian Sci-Fi/Fantasy Films Anu Thapa (bio) In recent decades, as Indian society’s digital modernization has continued apace and Indian cinema has completed its transition to digital, Hindu fundamentalist nationalism has been resurrected in the mainstream socio-political arena. This fundamentalist political ideology, also known as “Hindutva 2.0,” has found a happy and dangerous convergence in the narrative and aesthetics of contemporary Indian sci-fi/fantasy films. This essay traces the contours of this convergence by juxtaposing the ideological resurrection of Hindutva alongside the popular Krrish and Baahubali franchise films in contemporary India. These franchise films, I argue, harness the entanglements between religion and cinema technology to produce a speculative and spectacular Hindu cosmology that resonates with Hindu fundamentalist ideology. The expansive visuals and excessive spectacle of these films encompass the theological and technological all within themselves, serving the technophilic avatar of Hindutva 2.0. Remediated by digital technology and abetted by the photorealist effects of digital cinema, this fundamentalist ideology has become inextricable from the aesthetics of contemporary sci-fi/fantasy films. As contemporary cinema gets embroiled in the process of sensing and sense-making of this iteration of religious fundamentalism, that has suffused India’s socio-political arena, Walter Benjamin’s warnings about the “aestheticizing of politics” has become ever more relevant.1 [End Page 289] Religion and Hindi popular cinema That there exists a connection between religion and Hindi popular cinema is not a novel proposition. Even a cursory survey of Indian cinema scholarship will show that religious ideology, religiosity, and notions of faith are crucial to the composition and the consumption of Hindi popular cinema. Indeed, the catch-all term “religion” has been variously deployed to make claims about the aesthetic distinctions of this cinema. Scholars like Ashish Rajadhyaksha and Geeta Kapur, among others, have underscored the religious symbolisms of early Indian mythological films to typify the aesthetics of Indian popular cinema as vernacular.2 Similarly, film critic, Andre Bazin, argued that the success of Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali (1955) can be attributed to its aesthetic, which is markedly different from the “religious, social, and melodramatic music hall” of Indian popular cinema.3 Hindi popular cinema revels in inexplicable miracles and divine interventions rendered through over technological manipulations. The oft-referenced sequence in Manmohan Desai’s Amar Akbar Anthony (1975), depicting the miraculous restoration of vision represented through superimposition, exemplifies the fact that elements of deus ex machina have prevailed in this cinema. Over the years, Hindi popular cinema’s relationship with religion has changed alongside the socio-cultural and political impetus of the Indian nation. Its predilection for Hinduism and Hindu culture has remained a constant throughout, even as this cinema has incorporated Islamicate culture and Urdu language into its folds. In the early 1900s, Hindu mythologicals and devotionals provided the stories and the spectacles for the first films made in the Indian subcontinent. Hindu mythologicals, thus, became the formative genre of Indian cinema. Even during the Nehruvian era, arguably the most secular phase in the history of post-independence India, mainstream Hindi films retained their alignment with Hinduism. Mehboob Khan’s Mother India (1957) is perhaps the most widely and bestknown example from this period. During the 1970s Emergency Era, amidst communal strife and sectarian violence, films like Amar Akbar Anthony engaged with notions of religious harmony albeit under the auspices of a Hindu nation. Following economic liberalization in the 1990s, overt engagement with religion seemed to disappeared from Hindi popular cinema. Instead, films like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (Aditya Chopra, 1995) [End Page 290] relied on Hindu overtures to establish the NRI protagonist’s sociocultural affiliation with the Indian nation-state. Post-2000, Hindu fundamentalist ideology and popular cinema have collided in spectacular and, often, violent fashion, both on and off-screen. Emboldened by the political ascendency of Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), right-wing Hindu extremist groups moved into the center, appointing themselves the cultural and moral overseers. Against the exacting standards of Hindu fundamentalist ideals, popular cinema and its role in imaging and imagining the Indian nation has come into stark focus. On the one hand...

Rumi: The Homoerotic Sufi Saint Delaney James Expressions of sexuality, specifically homoerotic poetry, in mystical writings are by no means uncommon. Wendy Noel DeSouza examines Louis Massignon’s explicit expressions of homosexuality through his translations of Sufi mystical love writings. Paul Losensky documents the commonality of homosexual tendencies in the Persian poet Muhtasham’s works, specifically The Lover’s Confection. Amira El‐Zein writes that Rumi’s encounter with Shams‐Tabrizi sparked Rumi’s poetic nature and notes that all his poetry is addressed to him. With El‐Zein’s background on Rumi’s life (1207–1273) in consideration, this article will analyze Rumi’s love poetry dedicated to his teacher Shams‐Tabrizi (1185–1248). Specifically, it will first introduce Rumi’s itinerant life and his discipleship under Shams. It will then contextualize Rumi’s poetry within the conventional sexual norms of the eastern Mediterranean (present‐day Turkey), where long‐standing Hellenistic ideals of male‐male relations coexisted alongside the cultural norms of pre‐modern Islam. It will finally examine the explicitly sexual imagery within Rumi’s poetry, noting the crude imagery of selected passages versus the overtly loving imagery found in the many devotional verses dedicated to his spiritual guide. Such analysis is important for several reasons. While homoeroticism in Rumi’s poetry has not gone unnoticed by scholars in the field, such as Mahdi Tourage and Ali A. El‐Huni, this work will firstly contribute to the literature by contextualizing Rumi’s poetry to his spiritual guide Shams‐Tabrizi within the much larger cultural milieu of Greco‐Roman and Islamic culture in the Eastern Mediterranean. Secondly, it queers previous assumptions about the marriage/lover trope in mysticism studies, which Evelyn Underhill most clearly articulated by assuming and asserting that the “Spiritual Marriage” is a heteronormative one. Finally and by extension, this study redefines the nature of erotic mystical poetry in general. Usually, erotic verses dedicated to the Divine are understood to be a metaphor for the poet’s longing for intimacy with their God. In Islam, Allah is neither male nor female; but in Rumi’s love poetry, the subject he longs for takes on a distinctively male character, which he explicitly imagines as his guide Shams‐Tabrizi. Rumi’s life & learning Rumi’s life Many people today recognize the name Rumi even if they do not have a full understanding of who he was or his contribution to the mystical writings of Islam. Rumi, birth name Jalaluddin Muhammad, was born in 1207. One source claims that he was born in Balkh, Persia, or modern‐day Afghanistan, while another cites his birthplace as Vakhsh, Iran. According to El‐Zein, Balkh was invaded by Tartars, forcing Jalaluddin and his family to flee to Rum, Konia, or modern‐day Turkey. The region Rum is the reason Jalaluddin acquired the name “al‐Rumi,” or Rumi. However, Lewis writes that Rumi’s family left Vakhsh because his father Bahâ al‐Din was “denied the rank and prestige he sought.” Despite the discrepancies in Rumi’s birthplace, both authors agree that the poet migrated to Konia, present‐day Turkey. Rumi received a traditional religious studies‐education in Aleppo and Damascus, including the study of Hanafi law, Koran, Hadith, and theology. While obtaining this education, Rumi was “initiated into the Sufi path.” Once he returned to Konia, he became a recognized and beloved expert in Islamic law, also known as a mufti. People today often recognize Rumi for his poetry; but before Rumi met Shams‐Tabrizi, he had never written a single documented verse. Their encounter on November 29, 1244, made “poetry flow from him.” “He [Rumi] became more ecstatic in his worship, expressing his love for God not only in a careful attitude of self‐renunciation and control, but also through the joy of poetry, music and meditative dance.” Shams‐Tabrizi, Rumi’s spiritual guide, transformed Rumi’s life upon their first meeting and each day thereafter. The master‐disciple relationship The teacher‐student relationship is extremely important within the Islamic sect of Sufism. The goal of a Sufi mystical experience is to “merge with Allah in ecstatic union,” or fana. Union can only be achieved with the help of a master who...

Erastes‐Eromenos Relationships in Two Ancient Epics Morgan van Kesteren When reading ancient epics, such as Virgil’s Aeneid (Pharr ; West ) and Homer’s Iliad, parallels can be discerned from the complexities that lie underneath relations between certain characters, which highlight cultural aspects of ancient society. There exist undeniable similarities between the examples of heavenly love, Nisus and Euryalus from the Aeneid and Achilles and Patroclus from the Iliad, and the examples of common love, Dido and Aeneas from the Aeneid and Paris and Helen from the Iliad. Plato’s Symposium provides further insight into how ancient philosophers considered homosexual relations and what they deemed beneficial out of the love that two people share. In short, this paper argues that Plato’s Symposium can help provide insight into Virgil’s and Homer’s attitudes toward spiritual love and a more sexual love. This paper is organized into two main sections, focusing on the respective characters from the Aeneid and the Iliad. Each section provides a brief summary of the events of that epic, followed by examples from each story placed within the theoretical context of Plato’s explorations of love in the Symposium. Through close reading of these texts, this paper provides the reader with a sense of how homosexual relations have been understood and portrayed through the works of Virgil, Homer, and Plato. The Aeneid In his epic, Virgil whisks the reader through the Trojan warrior Aeneas’ journey as he, among the other Trojans, is forced to leave their land, defeated by the Greeks in the Trojan War, and eventually found Rome. The obstacles that Aeneas and his men face are the workings of the goddess Juno, who resents the Trojans and tries to prevent them from reaching the shores of Italy, even though Aeneas is destined to found Rome. Along their journey, a storm incited by Juno’s envious rage drowns many of his men, but Neptune guides Aeneas and the rest of the Trojan warriors safely to the shores of Carthage. Aeneas’s mother, the goddess Venus, empathizes with her distressed son and resolves to make his stay in Carthage pleasurable by providing Aeneas with the company of a lover. Under Venus’s command, Cupid strikes Dido, Queen of Carthage, with his arrow, causing Dido to fall head over heels for Aeneas. Lovesick Dido is quickly disappointed when her lover Aeneas must abandon her to continue his journey and fulfill his destiny, as determined by Jupiter. Devastated by Aeneas’s betrayal, Dido believes the only way to ease her pain is to commit suicide. This tragic love story of Dido and Aeneas reminds the reader that many of Virgil’s characters are simply pawns of the gods and only serve to promote the founding of Rome. While reading the Aeneid, certain relations between characters, like Nisus and Euryalus and Aeneas and Pallas, resonate as examples of the heavenly love depicted in Plato’s Symposium. Plato’s Symposium exposes various ancient Greek philosophers’ understandings about the goddess of Love, and it exposes the different motivations behind each type of love. Phaedrus, one of the ancient Greek philosophers, suggests that love between an older man and a younger man is most effective in guiding men to lead good lives, more so than the family, the state, or money, because this love teaches men shame when behaving disgracefully. Pausanias, another ancient Greek philosopher, strengthens Phaedrus’ theory by describing two different goddesses of love, Heavenly Aphrodite and Common Aphrodite, and associating them with two different types of love, heavenly love and common love. According to Pausanias, common love is deemed bad because it consists of attraction only between the bodies of a man and a woman and not between minds. Heavenly love, on the other hand, is only shared between two males and consists of a loved one who gratifies his lover, or his mentor, in exchange for wisdom and gaining virtue. When recognizing Pausanias’ two different types of love in the Aeneid, we observe that common love, like the love between Dido and Aeneas, is a form of divine intervention, whereas heavenly love, like the love between Nisus and Euryalus, is divinely protected. The fleeting love between Dido and Aeneas...
