Research Article1210.1007/s40474-023-00272-wPrograms to Prepare Siblings for Future Roles to Support Their Brother or Sister with a Neurodevelopmental Disability: a Scoping ReviewFeb 21, 2023Current Developmental Disorders ReportsLinda Nguyen + 5 more +5Purpose of ReviewTo identify and map the characteristics and outcomes of programs designed to prepare siblings for their future roles with their sibling with a neurodevelopmental disability.Recent FindingsExisting programs to support siblings of individuals with a neurodevelopmental disability often focus on providing information about neurodevelopmental disabilities, creating a community for siblings to connect with each other, and connecting siblings to resources and services to support them in their roles. Some programs are offered to the whole family with specific sessions for siblings. While these program descriptions are provided in the literature, there is limited understanding about the impacts and outcomes of these programs on siblings of an individual with a neurodevelopmental disability.SummaryFifty-eight articles (published between 1975 and 2020, with > 50% published since 2010) met the inclusion criteria, representing 54 sibling programs from 11 countries. Extracted data represented 1033 (553 females) sibling participants, between 4 and 67 years old. Twenty-seven programs focused on the outcome of knowledge acquisition for the siblings and thirty-one programs focused on the outcome of empowerment for the siblings to teach skills to their sibling with a neurodevelopmental disability. While there is an increasing number of programs for siblings of individuals with a neurodevelopmental disability in the past decade, there is a lack of siblings as co-developers or facilitators. Future research should consider the various roles that siblings can have in programs to address their needs.Read moreCiteListenSave

Research Article1110.1007/s40474-022-00259-zParent-Implemented Interventions via Telepractice in Autism Research: A Review of Social Validity Assessments.Nov 08, 2022Current developmental disorders reportsHedda Meadan + 2 more +2Parent-implemented autism interventions are considered empirically validated interventions and the use of telepractice in these interventions is reported as effective. However, little is known about the social validity assessments and outcomes of these interventions. The purpose of this review is to explore the current practices of conducting social validity assessment and reporting its outcomes within parent-implemented telepractice autism interventions. The 11 reviewed studies included caregivers as participants, telepractice intervention focusing on social communication outcomes of young autistic children, and were published in a peer-reviewed journal within the past five years. The researchers in the reviewed articles reported positive outcomes for parent-implemented telepractice autism interventions. Notably, however, information about social validity assessments of the interventions was limited. Researchers are encouraged to evaluate the social validity of interventions using multiple data sources and methods, and report on their findings as they relate to other types of data.Read moreCiteListenSave

Research Article610.1007/s40474-021-00226-0Evaluating Augmentative and Alternative Communication Modalities for Individuals With Developmental Disabilities: a Brief Review of the Last 5 YearsMar 11, 2021Current Developmental Disorders ReportsAmarie Carnett + 2 more +2This review is to extend our analysis of comparative AAC modality studies by evaluating the literature within the last 5 years as related to individuals with developmental disabilities. The findings are consistent with previous reviews of this topic and indicate that a variety of AAC modalities may be effective for individuals with developmental disabilities. Furthermore, these findings highlight the need to assess learner prerequisite skills and learner preference over time. This review confirms the need for assessments across a variety of variables and data-based decision making when considering AAC modalities for individuals with developmental disabilities.Read moreCiteListenSave
