Some graphic examples of the role of scorpions in the present-day culture of Cuba are presented. They include tattoos, jewels, carpets, caps, and drawings by children, among other objects of personal or social usage. Increased use of this arachnid as a cultural element among Cuban people during last 50 years seems to be directly related with globalization, mostly through the TV and movies.

A new species belonging to the genus Butheoloides With the description of Butheoloides (Butheoloides) littoralis sp. n., the total number of species of this genus known from Morocco is raised to five. This makes Morocco the region in Africa with the highest diversity for Butheoloides species.

A new species is described belonging to the genus Chaerilus Simon, 1877. Chaerilus andamanensis sp. n. was discovered in the Island of Little Andaman in the Indian Ocean. The new species shows affinities with Chaerilus variegatus Simon, 1877 and Chaerilus borneensis Simon, 1880, respectively described from Java and Borneo

Lowe, Graeme (2010): Two new species of Hottentotta Birula, 1908 (Scorpiones: Buthidae) from northern Oman. Euscorpius 103 (103): 1-23, DOI: 10.18590/euscorpius.2010.vol2010.iss103.1, URL: https://mds.marshall.edu/euscorpius/vol2010/iss103/1/

Five new species of diminutive buthid scorpions are described from Oman. Two belong to Microbuthus Kraepelin, 1898, a genus with heavily sclerotized, smooth, strongly pitted posterior metasomal segments, abbreviated telson, and pedipalps with 9 femoral and 6–7 external patellar trichobothria: M. gardneri, sp. nov., from the Al Hajar Mountains, and M. kristensenorum, sp. nov., from the Dhofar Mountains and Hadhramaut of Yemen, which was long misidentified as M. pusillus Kraepelin, 1898. Two additional new species are placed in a new genus Picobuthus, gen. nov., differentiated by granular posterior metasomal segments, elongate telson, pedipalps with 7–9 femoral and 5 external patellar trichobothria: type species P. wahibaensis, sp. nov., from the Wahiba Sands, and P. dundoni, sp. nov., from sand deserts in central Oman. A second new genus, Femtobuthus, gen. nov., is monotypic with type species F. shutuae, sp. nov., from the southern coast and plateau of Jiddat Al Harasis, differentiated by enlarged, granular, dentate metasomal segments, abbreviated telson, and pedipalps with 6 femoral and 5 external patellar trichobothria. The relationship of Microbuthus and the two new genera to other buthid scorpions is discussed, and their trichobothrial homologies are addressed. These three genera are hypothesized to represent a monophyletic ‘picobuthoid’ lineage that originated in the Arabian Peninsula.

A new species of scorpion, Buthoscorpio rayalensis sp.nov., is described from Andhra Pradesh, India. The new species of scorpion can be differentiated from its congeners in having the following set of morphological characters: anterior edge of carapace exhibiting very broad subtle indentation with a conspicuous epistome present medially, median eyes situated anteriorly in the ratio 1:3.1, interocular area smooth, patella anteriorly smooth and rounded, mesosomal tergites smooth, pectines 17-17, and arrangement of lateral eyes.Stenochirus jinnahii Amir, Kamaluddin et Jabbar, 2005 and S. rahmatii Amir, Kamaluddin et Jabbar, 2005 are considered Buthidae incertae sedis as their generic allocation has been erroneous.

A unique orthobothriotaxic pattern of family Iuridae is examined and illustrated. Significant positional differences in this pattern between two monotypic iurid genera, Calchas and Iurus, are presented. With the analysis of over 100 specimens of genus Iurus, representing many localities in Greece and Turkey, several unique occurrences of neobothriotaxy involving both the chela and patella are discussed and illustrated, representing the first report of neobothriotaxy in family Iuridae.

Summary A new species of scorpion belonging to the genus Androctonus Ehrenberg, 1828 (family Buthidae C. L. Koch, 1837), is described on the basis of one male and one female specimens collected at Sidi Smail in the Atlantic Coast of Morocco. With the description of Androctonus maroccanus sp. n., the total number of Androctonus species known to Morocco is raised to seven.

The relict, phylogenetically important scorpion genus Calchas Birula, 1899 (Iuridae) remained monotypic since its description. Its sole species, Calchas nordmanni Birula, 1899, was known only from northeastern Turkey until Kinzelbach (1980) published first records from southern and southeastern Turkey.A few more localities have been reported from Turkey; the species was also found on two Greek islands, Samos and Megisti. We analyzed significant material (63 specimens, including a previously unpublished large series from Naturhistorisches Museum Wien), and concluded that three distinct, disjunct species exist rather than one widespread species as previously thought. Two new species are described: Calchas birulai sp.nov.(southeastern Turkey, northern Iraq; 30 specimens studied) and Calchas gruberi sp.nov.(southern Turkey; Megisti Island and Samos Island, Greece; 23 specimens studied). The type species Calchas nordmanni Birula, 1899 (10 specimens studied) is restricted to northeastern Turkey.p. XIV \ p. XV p. XIV A new species of scorpions for the Russian fauna.A scarce scorpion fauna of the Empire, which hitherto comprised about 10 species, has been supplemented, due to a quite lucky recent travel by K. M. Deryugin to the southwestern portion of Transcaucasia, by one more species, quite interesting in zoogeographical context; this species should be considered a representative of a new genus, remarkable since it belongs to the subfamily Chactinae, hitherto considered to be exclusively American p. XV (Central and South America); it is remarkable that the new genus in its main characters is positioned between the american genera Broteas and Broteochactas. This finding further emphasizes the zoogeographical affinity between the Mediterranean Subregion and Central America, which in scorpiofauna hitherto was expressed in their common family Chactidae, found only in those lands, but previosuly represented there by different subfamilies, Euscorpiinae (Mediterranean Subregion) and Chactinae (S. and C. America). The new scorpion is named by me Calchas nordmanni in honor of the late Professor Nordmann of Helsingfors, who did so much for the study of the fauna of the southern parts of the Empire; its detailed descritpion will be given in due time, while now I submit only a diagnosis: Calchas n. gen.(Chactidarum [Chactidae]) Inferior margin of movable finger of mandibles [chelicerae] with one tooth; maxillae II [gnathobases] more narrow than sternum; all carinae on cauda [metasoma] elevated, granular, in part denticulate; two distinct inferior carinae; tarsi ventrally with two rows of short setae; chela manus flattened, wide, with elevated carinae.Type: Calchas nordmanni n. sp.(with the characters of the genus); locality
