The Beat generation of writers mounted a sustained attack on postwar models of temporality—the corporate boardroom, the procreative nuclear family, the dystopic scenario of atomic futurity—through a politics and aesthetics of disengagement. Their literary works aspired to the condition of immediacy, often drawing on jazz improvisation, Zen Buddhism, and the celebration of everyday life. Writings by Allen Ginsberg, Joanne Kyger, Philip Whalen, William Burroughs, John Wieners discussed in this essay, offered a series of alternate temporalities through three frames: a poetics of dailiness and the quotidian; technologies and materialities of presence; ideals of Beat futurity and utopia. The essay draws on queer and disability theorists for whom the phenomenology of time is experienced by bodies regarded as “out of time,” either because they don’t conform to heterosexual scenarios of compulsory reproduction or because they fail to “fit” in norms of physical and cognitive health.

This book is not a detailed history of American imperialist expansion into China, nor was it intended so.Rather, it is a study in history of American ideas about expansion and empire, a book where intellectual leaders, such as Alfred Thayer Mahan and Brooks Adams, are mentioned more often than political and military leaders.Rollo's approach to history can be described as conceptual, and also very general, so that specific events are only mentioned as indications of long-duration processes and trends.

The article examines the constant interplay between Americanizing and Italianizing dynamics that have shaped transnational representations of Italian identity and food culture. Building on the existing literature on the mutual influences between Italy and the U.S., my contribution explores how American media and Italian American cultural mediators—from Marcella Hazan to Stanley Tucci—have shaped a popular narrative that portrays Italian food culture as the gateway to an idealized lifestyle centered on values such as authenticity, tradition, and regionality. To this end, the article intertwines Italy’s food history with the analysis of some of the socio-cultural and economic developments that have affected Italian and American mediascapes from the 1970s to the present. These include both the “fast-foodization” of Italian and Italian American foodways, as well as the Americanization of Italy’s mediascapes. At the same time, the growing presence of Italy-centered food content across American media has provided platforms, contexts, and instruments allowing for a greater transfer of Italian cultural items and ways to the U.S. What ultimately emerges is not only the transatlantic development of a gastronomic Italian identity, but also the need to rethink notions of Americanization and Italianization as mutually involving processes of cross-cultural contamination.

Although Indigenous and postcolonial studies are often treated as distinct fields, this article argues for their interconnection through a focus on relational ways of being. By juxtaposing contemporary Indigenous North American and postcolonial Ghanaian novels, this essay explores the concept of relationality as a form of Indigenous resurgence. With Nanabush’s teaching of relationality as a framework, the study examines how characters in Eden Robinson’s Monkey Beach (2000), Diane Wilson’s The Seed Keeper (2021), and Ayi Kwei Armah’s The Healers (1979) navigate and sustain reciprocal relationships with human and non-human kin. The article’s primary contribution is a cross-cultural comparative method called reading resurgence that highlights shared commitments to decolonial futures. By reading resurgence, this work illuminates some of the ways in which Indigenous and postcolonial literatures reject colonial separations and insist on interconnected, place-based ways of knowing. Illuminating what can only be seen in the context of relationships, these novels tell a wider story about the urgent importance of sharing place-based knowledges inter- and intragenerationally to strengthen reciprocal connections between humans and the land. Ultimately, this study affirms the value of cross-cultural literary analysis in understanding how Indigenous and postcolonial narratives contribute to broader global decolonial movements.

presents an extensive investigation into the financial and political realities underlying American urban freeway development. It presents an accurate historical description of how fiscal policies impacted the development of city infrastructure from the early 20th century to the emergence of the Interstate Highway System.By placing fiscal politics at the focal point of that development, the authors demonstrate how financial strategies at the city, state, and federal levels have helmed the course and outcomes of freeway projects. 2The book provides a chronological and thematic analysis of the politics behind freeway funding and development in major U.S. cities, tracing the transition from public transit systems to automobile-based transportation. It begins by examining the landscape of

This article critically examines the historical, philosophical, and socio-political trajectory of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), tracing its evolution from a distinctly American psychological innovation to its hegemonic institutionalization in the United Kingdom. It situates CBT within three successive “waves” and highlights its philosophical roots in American empiricism, pragmatism, and individualism. The analysis underscores CBT’s compatibility with neoliberal ideals, particularly its emphasis on personal responsibility, cost-effectiveness, and quantifiable outcomes. Through a socio-historical lens, the article explores CBT’s transatlantic transmission into the UK, detailing its development through academic institutions, government-backed initiatives such as IAPT, and policy frameworks like NICE. It further contrasts the British embrace of CBT with the more resistant reception in France, underscoring how national intellectual traditions and political cultures mediate therapeutic adoption. The article also assesses the philosophical and methodological critiques surrounding CBT’s dominance, including concerns about therapeutic monoculture, reductionism, and the marginalization of alternative approaches. Finally, it explores emerging trends such as third-wave and process-based therapies, arguing that CBT’s structured and protocol-driven nature makes it particularly adaptable to contemporary challenges, including the digitalization of mental healthcare. The study offers a timely reflection on how psychotherapy practices become entangled with broader epistemological, political, and cultural forces.

The two terms of our title have long been destined for each other but, in the style of a Hollywood romantic comedy, have taken their sweet time to merge in an embrace. This special issue wants to be a setting for such a moment. We come into this with a double-pronged hypothesis: that “Beat time” is queer time, as it disrupts and rearranges the chronological patterns of straight society, and that recent critical work on queer temporality—the particular rhythms and tempos of queer minorities—c...
