The study of coordination and cooperation games constitutes a central area of behavioral economics, addressing how individuals achieve mutually beneficial outcomes despite conflicts between individual and collective interests. Coordination and cooperation problems arise in a wide range of contexts, including charitable giving, volunteering, proenvironmental behavior, and helping behavior in social and economic interactions.

This article presents a pragmatic framework for time-sensitive analysis of behavioral RCTs using sequence methods and Markov modeling. The focus is not methodological novelty but translation: we map common policy questions to appropriate temporal tools, provide a reporting checklist for transparency, and show how estimates become implementable rules for booster timing, triage, and exit. We position sequence analysis alongside multi-state hazards, HMMs, SMART/MRT, and g-methods, and we introduce an openly documented R package, sequenceRCT , that operationalises the end-to-end workflow with uncertainty quantification and reproducible outputs. A simulated illustration demonstrates interpretation and decision use, with ablations and a counterfactual booster vignette. We extend the framework to personalized interventions–where state-specific individual treatment effects are difficult to detect–and to reinforcement learning, where sequence-derived state spaces, empirical kernels, and off-policy evaluation support safe policy learning. We conclude with a staged validation agenda on existing datasets.

Hospitality and consumer environments are undoubtedly multisensory, yet auditory stimuli remain underutilized as intentional components of choice architecture. This mini-review synthesizes evidence from psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics examining how soundscapes—particularly micro-auditory cues such as door clicks and elevator tones—are undervalued in their functions as behavioral nudges that influence guest perception and decision-making within bounded rationality frameworks. Current evidence demonstrates that auditory stimuli activate affective priming, processing fluency, and associative memory mechanisms that systematically bias consumer judgments of value and satisfaction, yet research predominantly examines macro-level interventions while micro-auditory cues and biometric methods remain underexplored. Smart technologies now enable adaptive, personalized sonic ecosystems that could respond dynamically to guest and consumer states, presenting opportunities for experience-enhancing nudges and ethical risks regarding manipulation and consumer autonomy. This review identifies critical research gaps and proposes future directions emphasizing micro-level interventions, biometric methods, and ethical frameworks for auditory choice architecture in hospitality environments.

We study whether long-term exposure to climate-change-related extreme weather events is associated with farmers' risk preferences. We combine (i) a household survey of 1,502 farmers across 14 districts in Afghanistan's Central Highlands with (ii) an incentivized lab-in-the-field risk task for 239 farmers, and (iii) farm-level GPS coordinates that proxy drought exposure via distance to rivers/streams. Our analysis shows that farmers in (very) high-exposure locations are systematically less risk-averse: exposure predicts choosing riskier gambles in the Eckel–Grossman task and reporting greater willingness to take risks. Plausibility checks using GPS distances corroborate self-reported exposure. We discuss mechanisms consistent with adaptation to a persistently riskier environment and with background risk dampening aversion to additional independent risks. Our findings highlight that climate change can alter economic preferences themselves, with implications for adaptation policy design (e.g., uptake of new seeds, irrigation, or insurance).

IntroductionFirms use various forms of equity-based compensation to allow employees to participate in their success.MethodsWe examine how an unannounced profit-sharing distribution (PSD) affects participation in Employee stock purchase plans (ESPPs), which offer discounted shares. Using panel data from a multinational firm, we find counterbalancing effects of the PSD.ResultsWhile it attracts new participants to the ESPP, a similar share of former participants exit the program after receiving the distribution. This latter effect is particularly pronounced in countries characterized by higher average levels of prosociality.DiscussionOur findings suggest that unexpected profit sharing can have heterogeneous effects on ESPP participation across different cultural contexts.

A healthy mix of younger and senior players is often desirable for any team involved in a sports-tournament. It is often argued that the experience of senior players and fitness of the younger players could complement each other. How an athlete performs is determined by the accumulation of experience that grows with age and physical fitness that declines with age. Therefore, fitness and experience are competing forces that move in opposite directions. We explore the age-range of peak-performance in the lifetime of a sportsperson where the marginal benefits from experience and fitness are on balance. Using a unique data-set of all one-day international (ODI) cricket matches played from 1971 to 2000, we find that there is an inverted U-shaped performance-age curve where performance first gets better with age, then reaches a peak before finally declining (when experience can no longer undo the effects of declining fitness). This peak-performance is attained for bowlers at around 22–26 years and for batters at about 27–30 years. These results remain robust to different specifications and controls. We employ a theoretical framework for policy analyses of actual selection decisions made during our period of study. These analyses build on the empirical section of our paper.

ObjectivesWe study the introduction of a web portal allowing women to manage their appointments in the public cervical cancer screening program of an Italian Local Health Unit (LHU). We investigate how this intervention affects program participation and the ability of the LHU to collect information on women's screening outside the program.MethodsWe use administrative data from the LHU and a difference-in-differences design to compare outcomes of women in the treated group (n=870), who could reschedule appointments either through phone calls or through the portal, and the control group (n=768), who could only reschedule by phone.ResultsThe portal reduces the number of appointments rescheduled by phone (b = −0.176, 95% CI = −0.228 to −0.114, p < 0.001). It also makes women more likely to report both screenings outside the program (b = 0.049, 95% CI = 0.006–0.912, p < 0.05) and the various reasons for canceling their appointments. However, the portal also decreases the probability of screening (b = −0.156, 95% CI = −0.216–0.096, p < 0.001). Two-thirds of this reduction is due to increased unjustified no-shows (b = 0.099, 95% CI = 0.043–0.155, p < 0.001).ConclusionsDigital innovations increase efficiency of screening programs. However, they may discourage screening, by triggering behavioral biases such as limited attention and procrastination. Pairing portals with frequent reminders may help to boost participation.

This study uses the newsvendor problem to investigate the correlations between thinking orientation, overconfidence, and economic outcome. We aim to shed light on possible interconnections between these variables and extend the existing conceptual models of thinking orientation and overconfidence. To test the conceptual model and the corresponding hypotheses empirically, we employed a laboratory experiment with 50 hypothetical decision periods in which 142 participants ordered a highly profitable product. We found compelling evidence that suggests overprecision as the mediating variable between thinking orientation and the economic outcome. Furthermore, this research offers some practical implications.

Social decisions with monetary consequences are often accompanied with emotional consequences. Previous studies document a robust role of pre-play message communication in facilitating pro-sociality and cooperation. Yet, the effects of communicating emotional experiences in social interactions (particularly post-play) remain understudied. Here, we examine the value of a social environment where emotional expressions are shared post-play in contrast to a private environment where emotion exposure is absent. We develop an experimental design that facilitates emotion exposure and can be readily administered in or outside the laboratory. In this pre-registered online study, participants (N = 196) completed incentivized extensions of the Dictator Game (DG) and the Prisoners' Dilemma Game (PD). Participants learned to classify their emotional experiences on the arousal, valence, and dominance dimensions using non-verbal pictorial representations. Our experiment comprised both a within-subject and a between-subject manipulation: each participant completed a control condition (C, no emotional exposure) as well as an emotion exposure condition (Emotions), but the type of exposure varied between subjects (certain exposure, or Emotions-E, or probabilistic exposure, or Emotions-P). In all conditions, participants complete a one-shot DG and PD. We find that emotion exposure increases other-regarding behavior under both Emotions-E and Emotion-P conditions in the DG and under Emotions-E only in PD. Further, we find that demand for emotion exposure is hardly driven by the outcome of the social interaction (or the actions selected). We also document how empathic concern influence other-regarding behavior and how reports of emotional experiences vary across treatments and with the different outcomes of social interactions. Our results highlight the integral role of emotion exposure in social decision making. Environments that facilitate the communication of emotional experiences increase pro-sociality and encourage cooperation.
