Abstract Over the last 20 years, the study of the history and historical geography of resistance has drawn on trends within the disciplines of history and geography to develop into a subfield known as “new protest history.” The geographical background and approach of many of the scholars in the field means that “new protest historical geography” would be a more accurate, if less eloquent, descriptor. This article defines new protest history and explores its contributions to understandings of the geographies of resistance using three key themes: gender, practice, and materiality. In the process, I identify three avenues for future research: intersectionality, taskscapes, and activist historical geography.

Abstract Over the past two decades, the field of urban political ecology (UPE) has developed into a robust theoretical framework for understanding the production of uneven socionatures. More recently, expanded theoretical and empirical innovations in UPE research are pushing the framework's radical roots into new and productive directions for addressing (not just critiquing) persistent inequalities and marginalizations in and beyond cities. We trace this trajectory of UPE towards its more transformative potential and argue that UPE's relevance will increase as scholars continue to embrace the power of what Povinelli calls “obstinate curiosity” to give rise to unexpected connections between people and ecologies. Specifically, we call for continued diversification of both theoretical and methodological starting points for UPE research, particularly with respect to the ways that scholars practice situated solidarity movements for social and environmental justice in cities.

Abstract This paper explores possibilities for extending the geographical imagination in academic studies of social work. It notes how current “geographical” research is extensive and diverse—including interests in social and natural environments, practice settings, and global issues—but argues for a change whereby it is more explicitly informed by, and cast as, human geography. Part of this change would involve a transition in basic enterprise, whereby researching social work geographically shifts from being a one‐way effort on the part of academic social workers, to being a two‐way project also involving geographers. Another part would be an important theoretical transition whereby a broadly posthumanist geographical imagination is developed. Moving beyond humanistic privileging of a sovereign subject, this might emphasise distributed agency and a range of more‐than‐human actors, processes, and forces. Specifically, with this theoretical transition in mind, adopting a recently developed posthumanist theoretical typology, attention is paid to how research might be framed around three spatial processes always at play in the emergence and expression of social work. For each of these processes, resonance is acknowledged in existing social work literature, and final consideration is given to quite specific questions that could be asked and expertise that could be tapped.

Abstract Human migration plays a critical role in numerous contemporary environmental concerns including global climate change and environmental justice. This review characterizes the ways migration is critical to contemporary human–environment geography. We delineate four themes from the literature based on (a) how migration affects the environment; (b) how the environment and/or environmental events affect migration; (c) how migration produces uneven environmental benefits and burdens; and (d) how environmental displacement/dispossession produces migration and vice versa. We articulate five recommendations for a research agenda that integrates migration processes, recognizes migration as a heterogeneous process, and approaches human–environment interactions holistically and non‐deterministically.

Abstract There is currently no generally accepted definition for the “blue economy,” despite the term becoming common parlance over the past decade. The concept and practice have spawned a rich, and diverse, body of scholarly activity. Yet despite this emerging body of literature, there is ambiguity around what the blue economy is, what it encapsulates, and its practices. Thus far, the existing literature has failed to theorise key geographical concepts such as space, place, scale, and power relations, all of which have the potential to lead to uneven development processes and regional differentiation. Previous research has sought to clarify the ontological separation of land and sea or has conceptualised the blue economy as a complex governmental project that opens up new governable spaces and rationalises particular ways of managing marine and coastal regions. More recently, geographers have called for a critical—and practical—engagement with the blue economy. This paper critically examines the existing literature of the geographies of the blue economy through a structured meta‐analysis of published work, specifically its conceptualisations and applications to debates in the field. Results offer the potential to ground a bottom‐up definition of the blue economy. In so doing, this paper provides a clearly identifiable rubric of the key geographical concepts that are often overlooked by researchers, policymakers, and practitioners when promoting economic development and technological innovation in coastal and marine environments.

Abstract Regionally embedded foreign subsidiaries have an advantage over disembedded ones. The ability to draw on local knowledge networks to create differentiating capabilities can enhance the subsidiary's influence within the multinational enterprise. A subsidiary's power is shaped by its control over external resources or skills the parent company depends on to develop new products. These local relationships are then used to bargain for further mandates, sometimes in competition with sister subsidiaries. One way in which foreign subsidiaries can deepen their connections with the local context is by collaborating in their innovative efforts with university‐based collaborative research centers (CRCs). I argue that CRCs are not a panacea when it comes to embedding the subsidiaries of foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs). A review of the literature helps identify the subsidiary‐parent relationship and industry‐academia conflicts of interest as obstacles to the development of productive relationships between subsidiaries and academia. I draw on evidence from three Ontario CRCs, with different scientific focus and stakeholders and analyze how these factors shape their behavior. The study shows that long‐term CRCs‐subsidiary relationships can be challenging to establish. This is because subsidiaries remain tightly controlled by their parent companies and cannot get access to the resources necessary to pursue ambitious innovation projects. It is also challenging for subsidiaries to form long‐term relationships with CRC researchers, who prioritize other goals such as training skilled personnel and continuing their research agenda. CRCs where 1) subsidiaries have a strong bargaining position within the MNE, and 2) academic expertise is aligned with industry needs have a greater chance to contribute to future MNE embeddedness.

Abstract This paper undertakes a close examination of the work of grime DJs to demonstrate the value of Cultural Geography scholarship in developing new ways of thinking about work in general, and specifically in approaching the concept of aesthetic labour. In particular, the paper examines three ways in which we can theorise this kind of work and performance. First, the paper notes how value is constituted within fields of cultural judgement and taste, through a discussion of the aesthetic labour involved in the workers' self‐fashioning. Second, it expands the concept of aesthetic labour beyond this self‐fashioning to encompass the staging of value and the associated spaces of embodied performance and the generation of placed atmospherics. Finally, the paper discusses how aesthetic labour has expanded through its implication in the digital geographies and spatialities of creative work. Through these three foci, the paper therefore highlights how Cultural Geography's engagements with aesthetic labour may be productively expanded to help us to investigate the cultural character and spatialities of contemporary creative work.
