Ideas for educatorsMay 01, 2020Geology TodayChris KingThe spread of the 2020 Covid‐19 pandemic has had a major effect on the way that geologists carry out their work—and particularly those engaged in educating the next generation of geologists. There are a number of resources available, and some, focussed on fostering interest in budding geologists, are presented here.Read moreCiteListenSave
Research Article10.1111/gto.12305Fortress Wytschaete: geological controls on the German frontline in Flanders, 1914–1917Mar 01, 2020Geology TodayPeter Doyle + 2 more +2The Battle of Messines (Wytschaete Bogen) of June 1917 is hailed as a triumph of military geology, with the simultaneous explosion of some 19 mines leading to the Allied destruction of the German frontline positions. This story is well known and rightly celebrated; but less well understood and often overshadowed by this success is the story of the effectiveness of the German fortress positions. These were constructed in late 1914 in order to maintain the strategic aim of holding the Allies in the west while pressing the Russians through a series of offensives in east. In this, they were highly effective, even in the face of continuous Allied bombardment. This article seeks to redress this unbalance in our understanding, drawing on archaeological evidence and archival resources to present a clearer picture of the nature of the German positions.Read moreCiteListenSave
Research Article10.1111/gto.12301In the field with Joe: early excursions of the Freelance Geological SocietyMar 01, 2020Geology TodayStephen K Donovan + 1 more +1Fieldwork in the twenty‐first century is the subject of health and safety legislation and paperwork, as we don our luminous jackets and protective helmets. Sometimes, the geology can feel like an afterthought. Contrast this with the Freelance Geological Society in the late 1940s and after, in the field most weekends, collecting, climbing and caving, in a post‐war world with abundant quarries and mines.Read moreCiteListenSave

Research Article110.1111/gto.12261Peering inside the peak ring of the Chicxulub Impact Crater—its nature and formation mechanismMar 01, 2019Geology TodayJaime Urrutia‐Fucugauchi + 5 more +5The IODP‐ICDP Expedition 364 drilled into the Chicxulub crater, peering inside its well‐preserved peak ring. The borehole penetrated a sequence of post‐impact carbonates and a unit of suevites and clast‐poor impact melt rock at the top of the peak ring. Beneath this sequence, basement rocks cut by pre‐impact and impact dykes, with breccias and melt, were encountered at shallow depths. The basement rocks are fractured, shocked and uplifted, consistent with dynamic collapse, uplift and long‐distance transport of weakened material during collapse of the transient cavity and final crater formation.Read moreCiteListenSave
