Experimental data as for the seed propagation of the four species of genus <i>Pyracantha</i>: <i>P. coccinea </i> M. Roem., <i> P. crenatoserrata</i> (Hance) Rehd.,<i> P. crenulata</i>(D.Don) Roem., <i>P.koidzumii</i>(Hayata) Rehd. <i> are given. Observations were carried out in the years 2013-2015. Various methods of preplant treatment and the terms of seed sowing were determined. It was established that autumnal sowing with the help of fresh gathered seeds and scarification method turned to be effective for all the species with the ultimate seedlings efficiency.

Today, no botanical garden can survive without a seed laboratory. Mainly, update of the living plants’ collections is possible through an exchange of plant material. Published lists of plants – whose seeds ripe in botanical gardens – provide data on the composition and ability to obtain mature seeds of different plant species. The article provides data on the development of the Peter the Great Botanical Garden that was established more than 200 years ago, its role and modern goals. Data on the present carpological collection (around 17.000 samples) is provided in the article as well.

The article describes the new informative and health-improving route, "A garden walk - on the road to health", of the Petrozavodsk State University Botanical Garden. The route has been developed for the older generation; however, in the future, citizens and guests of the city of different age groups will be able to take this route. The path goes through the most beautiful and interesting exhibitions, collections and natural areas of the garden; information about health-improving qualities of local and introduced plants and the northern nature is provided along the way. Results of the year 2015 proved the importance of this project, as well as the need to create more therapeutic parks and gardens. The article presents outcome of the project "The Open Garden" at the municipal public institution "Integrated Social Service Center of Pryazha region - Nadezhda" in the village of Essoila (Karelia).

The main field of research carried out in the Polar-Alpine botanical garden-institute is the plant introduction and acclimatization. The problem of particular complexity is the protection of plant introducents from pests. The representatives of the Coccinea suborder are found in the Far North exclusively in greenhouses. Monitoring of a phytosanitary condition of Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden plant collection fund revealed the most stable pest species in relation to local conditions and methods used to fight against species of the Coccinea suborder. Сomposition of forage plants is defined and species of plant-reserves, on which pest population is formed, are selected. List of tropical and subtropical plants populated by Coccinea in the collection of the Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden is compiled (data on the years of 2004-2013 )

Scientific and educational electronic resource "Geographic information system Botanical Garden PSU" is designed to provide social activities of the Botanical Garden, support educational and industrial practice and research students, as well as fundamental and applied research. The structure consists from base and thematic information layers. Base layers include complex topographic data in sections: land, topography, hydrography, roads, infrastructure facilities. Thematic layers represented by the following complexes: property, geological structure, the forest fund, landscapes, and special collections of plants, materials of remote sensing data.

We carried out the research of reproduction Oxalis stricta L. in South Karelia. Reproduction of this species is confined mainly to cultural sites. In areas with dense plant cover O. stricta breeds vegetatively. Vegetative reproduction of this species is provided by rhizomes with buds. By the middle of august 12 buds form per the rhizome of one fertile individual. O. stricta occupies new areas and areas with decreased competition using seed reproduction. In South Karelia 42 flowers form per shoot of O. stricta. Factual seed production of single shoot is 1100 seeds. In South Karelia O. stricta breeds active enough to support abundance in cultural areas without human assistance. But today this species doesn’t show invasive characteristics.
