I would like to present and (partially) prove an interesting statement about the existence of solutions to the discrete time Lyapunov equation (see “Summary”)

Behaviors that derive from a potential have huge potential. Their potential has the graphical interpretation of an energy landscape. The gradient behavior is determined by a local update rule that provides the best possible descent for the potential. The potential, a scalar-valued function or functional, provides a complete qualitative characterization of the behavior: an infinite set of trajectories.

This is August, and I am returning from a few days far away from work. During those few days, I did my best to stay away from e-mails, to read on paper rather than on screen, to write with pen rather than with a keyboard, to stay outside rather than inside. Holy days. Days of respiration. Days of encounters.

This index covers all technical items-papers, correspondence, reviews, etc.-that appeared in this periodical during 2023, and items from previous years that were commented upon or corrected in 2023. Departments and other items may also be covered if they have been judged to have archival value. The Author Index contains the primary entry for each item, listed under the first author's name. The primary entry includes the coauthors' names, the title of the paper or other item, and its location, specified by the publication abbreviation, year, month, and inclusive pagination. The Subject Index contains entries describing the item under all appropriate subject headings, plus the first author's name, the publication abbreviation, month, and year, and inclusive pages. Note that the item title is found only under the primary entry in the Author Index.

How would you pitch your Ph.D. dissertation in one paragraph?

How did your education and early career lead to your initial and continuing interest in the control field?

As the title of this monograph describes, the book has two major aims: 1) to present the mathematics that are used for financial engineering and 2) to provide the financial tools that are necessary in the study of financial engineering. The mathematics presented here are very thoughtfully selected from different areas and serve to demonstrate the interdisciplinary character of the financial engineering field. The mathematics part of the book surveys elements of set theory, linear algebra, real analysis, approximation and numerical analysis, optimization theory, probability theory, and stochastic processes. The selection of the elements of several areas of mathematics (with each topic typically being taught in a dedicated semester-long course) is a tough challenge and requires teaching experience. It is obvious to this reviewer that the book is written based on the author’s experience in teaching this course. The mathematical part emphasizes topics of linear algebra, including matrices and their operations, linear equations and methods for solving systems of linear equations, computing the inverses of matrices, and determining eigenvalues and eigenvectors. While these topics can be obtained in a basic course in linear algebra, the succinct presentation of this material in this book enhances the success of communication of these ideas. The mathematical tools part of the book continues with the study of optimization of functions and then stochastic processes. Again, while all of these mathematical topics are clearly available elsewhere, the author has condensed them into a very readable account.

Once upon a time, control systems were connecting sensors and actuators. Nowadays, they primarily process “data” like any other machine belonging to the modern age. Data are the new gold: the new source of wealth and power. Peter Sondergaard, global head of research at Gartner, said, “Information is the oil of the 21st century, and analytics is the combustion engine.” Eric Schmidt, executive chairman at Google, stated, “There were 5 exabytes of information created between the dawn of civilization through 2003, but that much information is now created every two days.” It is all just data. More is better.
