Point cloud registration is a fundamental problem in robotics, critical for tasks such as localization and mapping. Most approaches to this problem use feature-based techniques. However, these approaches have issues when dealing with unstructured environments where meaningful features are difficult to extract. Recently, an innovative global point cloud registration algorithm, PHASER, which does not rely on geometric features or point correspondences, has been introduced. It leverages Fourier transforms to identify the optimal rigid transform that maximizes cross-correlation between source and target point clouds. PHASER can also incorporate additional data channels, like LiDAR intensity, to enhance registration results. Because it does not rely on local features and because of its ability to exploit additional data, PHASER is particularly useful when dealing with very noisy point clouds or with many outliers. For this reason, we propose an extension to PHASER that considers multiple plausible rototranslation hypotheses. Our extended approach outperforms the original PHASER algorithm, especially in challenging scenarios where point clouds are widely separated. We validate its effectiveness on the DARPA SubT, and the Newer College datasets, showcasing its potential for improving registration accuracy in complex environments.

Conventional robots are constructed with rigid parts and materials, restricting their ability to deform freely and adapt to the external environment. Performing tasks such as handling delicate materials and navigating narrow pathways is challenging for these typical robots made of stiff materials. However, there is a growing demand for such functions in various industries. Recent advances in soft robotics have garnered considerable attention as solutions to these challenges. Soft robotic systems in various forms present a systematic solution for performing unique tasks. The goal of soft robotics research is to develop advanced technologies, incorporating innovative robotic mechanisms based on soft materials and structures to enhance adaptability. Soft robots find broad applications in diverse fields, including industry, healthcare, and field exploration. Soft component technology plays a crucial role in configuring soft robots. Soft actuators introduce new types of motion and operation mechanisms, while soft sensors measure the deformation of the actuators with a tiny stiffness change. These advancements in soft actuators and sensors encourage researchers to explore new robotic designs and applications. Additionally, the component technology enables the integration of soft and typical robots into hybrid B Youngsu Cha

Robot-assisted navigation is a perfect example of a class of applications requiring flexible control approaches. When the human is reliable, the robot should concede space to their initiative. When the human makes inappropriate choices the robot controller should kick-in guiding them towards safer paths. Shared authority control is a way to achieve this behaviour by deciding online how much of the authority should be given to the human and how much should be retained by the robot. An open problem is how to evaluate the appropriateness of the human’s choices. One possible way is to consider the deviation from an ideal path computed by the robot. This choice is certainly safe and efficient, but it emphasises the importance of the robot’s decision and relegates the human to a secondary role. In this paper, we propose a different paradigm: a human’s behaviour is correct if, at every time, it bears a close resemblance to what other humans do in similar situations. This idea is implemented through the combination of machine learning and adaptive control. The map of the environment is decomposed into a grid. In each cell, we classify the possible motions that the human executes. We use a neural network classifier to classify the current motion, and the probability score is used as a hyperparameter in the control to vary the amount of intervention. The experiments collected for the paper show the feasibility of the idea. A qualitative evaluation, done by surveying the users after they have tested the robot, shows that the participants preferred our control method over a state-of-the-art visco-elastic control.
