Eldercide by family caregivers is an underexplored but growing concern in ageing societies. Japan, the most rapidly ageing country in the world, offers an important case for examining this phenomenon. Drawing on 204 cases reported in a major Japanese national newspaper between 2000 and 2024, this study employed a mixed-method content analysis to construct a foundational understanding of eldercide by family caregivers in Japan. Quantitative findings indicate that these cases predominantly involve female victims and male offenders, both typically aged 65 and over. Qualitative analysis uncovered recurring contextual factors, including caregiver burnout, economic hardship, elder abuse, and strained familial relationships. The findings suggest that caregiver eldercide represents a distinct form of domestic homicide shaped by demographic ageing, cultural caregiving expectations, and gaps in institutional support. This study advances homicide scholarship by conceptualizing caregiver eldercide as a unique subtype of family homicide and highlights implications for theory, research, and prevention in ageing societies worldwide.

This study tested the effectiveness of a nudge-based intervention aimed at encouraging cyclists to lock their bicycles, thereby reducing theft risk in nonurban areas of Japan. In this quasi-experimental design, four types of signs (control, social proof, perceived response cost, and reciprocity) were installed at 14 bicycle parking areas in Fukushima Prefecture. The number of locked bicycles was recorded twice before and seven times after the installation, covering the period from August to December 2024. A postintervention survey assessed whether cyclists recalled seeing the signs. Findings revealed that all signs increased the proportion of locked bicycles, with the effectiveness of each sign influenced by the initial locking rate at each location. These results provide empirical evidence confirming that nudge-based interventions can promote behavior change for crime prevention in nonurban settings in Japan. Future large-scale randomized experiments are needed to further validate and expand these findings.

While safety is a key consideration in prison management, the empirical literature in this field is underdeveloped in several ways, especially theoretically. In this contribution, we outline a theoretical framework from the criminological literature on safety in non-incarcerated populations, which has extensively examined both objective and subjective safety, as well as their interrelations. This theoretical framework is subsequently applied to the prison literature. We observe that there is an overrepresentation of objective safety parameters like victimization, a lack of consistency across studies measuring subjective safety, and that the link between both objective and subjective safety as well as the links between the different aspects of subjective safety are underexplored. This review concludes with advocating for more comprehensive research on both objective and subjective aspects of safety by means of the proposed framework, in order to get insights into the complex nature of safety in prisons.

This study integrates several research lines to assess whether and how harsh and warm parenting behaviors may each modify the relationship between adverse life events and delinquent adaptations among Chinese adolescents. Furthermore, this study assesses whether the hypothesized moderating effects may vary among male and female adolescents. Data drawn from over 500 middle school students from an urban city in China yield results quite consistent with the expectations. Exposure to adverse life events and harsh parental discipline are independently associated with elevated levels of delinquent participation, and these relationships are observed among both male and female adolescents. Furthermore, the effects of stressful life events on delinquency depend upon levels of parental behaviors as well as the gender of adolescents. Specifically, harsh parental discipline in conjunction with stressful life events is related to higher levels of delinquency among Chinese female adolescents, whereas warm parenting offsets the effect of adverse life events on delinquency among male adolescents. These results are discussed in term of their theoretical importance and cultural implications.

This study examines the environment of one of the largest and most recently built shopping mall in Karachi, Pakistan. The aim of this study is to assess how building design, familiarity with the mall, and past experiences of victimization influence visitors’ perceived safety. Using site inspections guided by crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) principles and an online survey, the study identifies factors affecting visitors’ perceived safety. Findings indicate that enhancing surveillance, territoriality, and access control in well-designed and maintained spaces can impact levels of perceived safety. These findings underscore the importance of surveys, in combination with site inspections, in providing a comprehensive tool for understanding and improving safety in commercial complexes.

Research suggests that previously burglarized targets, and targets located near such locations, are at an increased risk of being victimized. However, this elevated risk is only temporary and appears to subside over time. The boost account is one theory that attempts to describe the occurrence of repeat, and near repeat, burglaries. The boost account suggests that these burglaries are the result of the same offender returning to burglarize a dwelling that they have successfully burglarized in the past, or one near the previously victimized target. In the current study, we first determined the repeat and near repeat space-time clustering of solved residential burglaries committed in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, from 2007 to 2008. The results indicate that solved Edmonton burglaries do cluster together in time and space (i.e., residences within 700 m of a previous burgled target are at an increased risk for a period of 7 days). We also investigated whether repeat and near repeat burglaries in the dataset were more likely than distant burglaries to be committed by the same offender. It was found that serial offending by the same offender offers a viable rationale for much of the repeat and near repeat burglaries committed in Edmonton from 2007 to 2008. The practical implications of these results, as well as some limitations and directions for future research, are discussed.
