The social capital embedded within the social network relationships among users may facilitate their continued usage of mobile SNS. However, how to develop social capital remains a question. In this article, the authors incorporated three factors of system quality, information quality, and service quality from the information systems (IS) success model to examine their effects on social capital in mobile SNS. The results indicate that these three factors have significant effects on social capital, which includes structural capital, relational capital, and cognitive capital. The results imply that service providers need to improve users' technological perceptions in order to develop social capital and facilitate their continuance of mobile SNS.

This article describes how a tablet-based communication technology designed for older adults was explored for its adoption and impact on family relationships. A case study methodology was employed to collect and analyze interviews, field notes, observations and messaging activity over a 12 week period. Twelve participants, eight with a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score suggestive of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), were paired with a student to learn and use InTouch. 1212 messages were sent, from which text, audio, photo, and video data types were used 705, 280, 143 and 84 times, respectively. Most participants voiced that personalized text messaging was not the easiest feature to use, but was their preferred mode. Two participants used audio more than text, highlighting a need for feature customization. Older adults view a simplified tablet-based interface as a valuable means of enhancing communication with friends and family. With guided weekly support older adults learned to use this technology independently and integrated its use into their daily lives.

This study aims to investigate the effect of smartwatches' menu structure and layout on user performance and satisfaction. A total of 30 younger and older adults participated in this study. Usability testing was first conducted, and it identified the two most serious usability problems of smartwatches: confusing information structure and interface content. Furthermore, results showed that menu disorientation was predominant. Therefore, prototypes with a different menu structure and menu layout were developed and tested in two subsequent experiments. The menu structure experiment indicated that the tree structure of the menu is better than the linear structure in terms of performance and satisfaction, and the two-branch hierarchical menu contributed to better performance than the three-branch hierarchical menu. The menu layout experiment indicated that menus with high visual density had a slightly better performance but lower satisfaction than low visual density. In the end, design guidelines about smartwatch menus were proposed.

We constantly move our gaze to gather acute visual information from our environment. Conversely, as originally shown by Yarbus in his seminal work, the elicited gaze patterns hold information over our changing attentional focus while performing a task. Recently, the proliferation of machine learning algorithms has allowed the research community to test the idea of inferring, or even predicting action and intent from gaze behaviour. The on-going miniaturization of gaze tracking technologies toward pervasive wearable solutions allows studying inference also in everyday activities outside research laboratories. This paper scopes the emerging field and reviews studies focusing on the inference of intent and action in naturalistic behaviour. While the task-specific nature of gaze behavior, and the variability in naturalistic setups present challenges, gaze-based inference holds a clear promise for machine-based understanding of human intent and future interactive solutions.

Studies have found that drivers tend to neglect their surrounding traffic during automated driving. This may lead to a late and inefficient resumption of control in case of handover of the driving task to the driver. The authors evaluated the effectiveness of a vibrotactile seat displaying spatial information regarding vehicles approaching from behind to enhance the driver preparedness to the handover of control. A simulator experiment, involving 26 participants, showed that when drivers were required to regain control of the vehicle, having a vibrotactile seat improved speed and efficiency of reactions in scenarios requiring lane changing immediately following a handover. In addition, eye-tracking analysis showed that the participants had more systematic scan patterns of the mirrors in the first two seconds following the transition of control request. Interestingly, this effect exists in-spite of the finding that during automated driving mode, having a vibrotactile display led to fewer glances at the road.

This paper disseminates work from the European Give&Take project, which aims at co-designing service sharing among senior citizens based on a mobile and distributed platform. With this project as a frame, the authors' paper addresses methodological considerations of participation in co-design for ageing. Based on the notions of design culture, communities of everyday practice and situated elderliness the authors present accounts from two European countries, and discuss methodological issues related to mobilizing senior citizens in co-design work as they have manifested themselves and influenced the Give&Take project. Challenges for mobilization are identified, based on an analysis of attitudes and values among design researchers and senior citizens. This analysis lead them to identify and discuss three strategies for mobilizing senior citizens in co-design of mobile technology: 1) Understanding being ‘elderly' as situated elderliness rather than closed categories; 2) Understanding how ad hoc or loosely coupled infrastructures can define a community rather than a formal, organisational structure; and 3) Understanding the nature of mobilization and motivation for participation as processes that continue, and need to be supported, also after completion of the project. These strategies have emerged in the authors' work on mobilization and service sharing, but may apply to a broader context of infrastructuring and ongoing negotiations.

Retaining users and facilitating their continuance usage are crucial to the success of mobile social network sites. The purpose of this research is to identify the factors affecting continuance usage of mobile social network sites. The results indicated that both system quality and service quality affect trust, which in turn affects flow experience and privacy concern. In addition, privacy policy can help mitigate privacy concern. Trust, flow and privacy concern determine continuance usage. The results imply that service providers need to improve users' experience and mitigate their privacy concern in order to facilitate their continuance usage.
